Can not connect "Verifying Internet connection" - I have tried everything!

4 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I have Virgin cable internet and my wireless connection does not work now, my wifi adapter is fine as it works on another network. My laptop will connect to the modem but it sits there with "Identifying (Public network).

There is internet as I can connect using ethernet and I can also connect wirelessly using the laptop I am currently writing this on, an identical laptop to the one that will not connect. Also my smart phone connects wirelessly.

I believe it is something to to do with the DNS, IPv4 or IPv6?

I have called Virgin and they are absolutely pathetic and useless + you pay for the 0845 call - Disgusting customer service and the only reason I used Virgin was they offered cable otherwise I would be using Zen.co.uk who understand customer service. First Indian guy just hung up after 5 min, second Indian guy just went through the basic turn everything off and on game and then sent me to guy in Scotland who hung up too!

Can anyone please solve this problem?

Many thanks
Brook

So it looks like 1 PC works the other doesn't. Sounds like the failing one is not set up identically. Try setting up as per the working one and disable IPv6, AFAIK VM do not use that.

So let me get this right.

You have a laptop which won't connect to the internet.

There is nothing wrong with your internet connection as you can connet with a PC (wired), your Smart phone and an Identical laptop.

What do you expect VM support to do? The problem is with the laptop not your BB connection.

As you have an identical one that connects you can check the settings on that one are the same as the one that will not connect.

have you tried a wired connection? modem to laptop and does that work, if not then its a software issue.

so the only thing i can think of is back up the laptop and then starting from scratch, fresh install and see if that works.

try going to "manage wireless network" and delete the wireless profile(s) reboot laptop and try reconnecting. Do not disable IPv6 as this tends to break any HomeGroup shares in windows 7.

If this doesn't work try temporary disabling the firewall and reconnect again (remember to turn it back on after)

Hello all, thanks for your replies.

I am on Windows Vista. I have deleted the wireless profile and started it again a number of times. Yes I have identical laptop that works fine and ethernet works fine on mine also. This error occurs after I go and use another wireless network. The minute I come back home I can not connect to the VM network but if I use other wireless networks my laptop is fine. Last time I gave up trying to fix the wireless connection to VM and then woke up the next morning and it worked. This time I was not so lucky.

I have all the same connection boxes ticked as on the identical laptop that works, still nothing.

Turning firewall off and connecting gives me the same result. 'Identifying'

I am not convinced it is the laptop as it works flawlessly on one other wifi network. But it is after using that other wifi network that I can't then get back on to VM. Laptop is a Samsung x360 and not that old....

Thread moved to NETWORKING as it's not an internet connection issue but instead a networking issue

ok only other thing i know thats makes vista get stuck on identifying is using the wrong password/key or encryption method. you could try disconnecting your other laptop and reconnect to confirm the password your using is correct.
what antivirus/firewall are you using?

Ok, well I have tried the password and it seems to be fine on the other pc. It is the password written on the cable modem. I have ANG antivirus. Firewall is just Windows one.

Did you ever have norton internet security on the laptop? If so download and run the symantec removal tool.

Other than that open an administrator command prompt (Start, Programs, Accessories, RIGHT CLICK on Command Prompt and click 'Run As Administrator') Type in the following commands then reboot.

ipconfig /flushdns
netsh int reset all
netsh winsock reset

Once you have rebooted does it connect ok?

Re: Can not connect "Verifying Internet connection" - I have tried everything!

I have never had Norton on my pc, I don't like it taking over my pc.

I tried this also:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh int reset all
netsh winsock reset

No luck at all. However VM have actually called me and will set up a 'senior advisor' to go through all my settings. Peter Taylor on the phone sounded promising.

Any other bright spark ideas this end? Thank you all for your time so far.

a) Set your IP settings manually to see if it's the wireless that's the problem or your DHCP.

b) Try it in safe mode with networking to see if software on your machine is the problem

Re: Can not connect "Verifying Internet connection" - I have tried everything!

Hmm ... I had similar problems with two Vista Laptops. In my case they would sometimes connect, frequently would connect with local network only, and sometimes internet would be fine. Research on the internet suggested that this was not an uncommon problem ... but that there were no common solutions. In the end I went with ensuring all driver and windows software was fully up to date, then updating the firmware in my router. I wish I could say that fixed it ... but unfortunately Windows recognised the firmware download as being from an internet source and locked it. Therefore when I tried to apply the new firmware to the router I could not access it ... and urm that left the router without firmware. :( My fix was then to buy a brand new modem/router .... and that worked.

Re: Can not connect "Verifying Internet connection" - I have tried everything!

Try: ipconfig /renew, then check if you are assigned the correct ip address, ipconfig /all and check the address for the wireless adapter.
Also, you don't say which router you have, check the range of ip addresses that are set, i.e. 194.168.0.0 to 194.168.0.30. Check if the above is somewhere in that range, yours may be different. You can also try reserving the ip address in your router for the laptop, you will need its name and mac address to do that and set it to say, 194.168.21. One more is to try connecting to an open link with your wireless password diabled then again if thats sucessful with it enabled. I have had some sucess doing that in the past when i could't get onto the internet but connected to the router.

Re: Can not connect "Verifying Internet connection" - I have tried everything!

I had some contact direct from Virgin via email which was a welcome surprise. In fact I got signed up to the 'Virgin Media Digital Home Support' where they shadow your pc and actually fix stuff there and then. So now after two attempts they have fixed the problem both times but alas as soon as I go to another WiFi network and then come back to my Virgin Wifi the problem still persists. I simply can not reconnect onto Virgin.

I tried using the 'Home Support' service today and it is 'out of order' until 9am Monday, so no help there!

I am on the ethernet connection right now.

It seems it is a problem with the Virgin Wifi all in one modem and router. Ho hum... still trying to get all this sorted. Weirdly though it all still works perfectly going to and from different WiFi networks with the other identical laptop.

LOL! Here we go again!

I bet my money on this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233

When this works, you will say sorry to the Virgin staff here won't you! lol!

Re: Can not connect "Verifying Internet connection" - I have tried everything!

Sounds like a wireless security authentication problem. Try going in to router, removing wireless security. Then try connecting laptop that does not connect. Go back in to router settings and put security back on. Try reconnecting with laptop that would not connect, and hopefully everything will be fine.
