Ask them where they got your number from and they will soon hang up and register yourself with the Telephone Preference Service to prevent any future calls. http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/

I suspect that the telecoms companies may have meand of telling which phone numbers are allocated to specific telecoms providers?

Re: has virgin got mole in billing

Probably as VM numbers tend to be in a certain sequence.. Here where I live in this section of the 01582 code area most local numbers starting with 5 are VM numbers where as the local BT numbers start with 8 ;)

thanks lads so its possible to work out virgin numbers by the way theyre issued.

Masque I already done this because npower kept ringing up when we left them for another service.

Who owns talktalk as it was foreign call centre then again all the companies use india as telephone exchange today.

Just inform them that you are registered with the TPS and can you speak to a supervisor/manager and they will hang up instantly.

Re: has virgin got mole in billing

Allocated number ranges for each phone exchange are readily available on the Ofcom website for anyone that wants them. Of course it's not completely accurate due to the amount of porting that goes on.

my vm number is 01582 898***

My VM number is 01279 435*** i ported it over from BT when i had a purely cable number at a previous address it begun with a 8 that was back in the days of anglia cable though.

In theory then nobody now would know i am a cable VM customer as my number is an old BT one.

That's exactly how it works, Joe Public also has the same means...

http://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm put in your area code and bob's your uncle...

Indeed. It just tells you who the original owner is.

As above - my number was ported from BT to Jones Cable in 1995, and the lookup still says BT....

It can only tell you who the block is allocated to, and indeed when you make a call the system would need to contact the BT exchange that would handle your call to find out where it needs to route it.

I know - I was the billing systems manager at Jones Cable, and worked with BT on Interconnect billing, so I had it explained to me in great depth.....;)

(and also again when I was at Ventura, when we did BT Cellnet's Customer Care, and I worked on Mobile Number Portability...).

Agreed, but all these cold callers who get accused of "having access to Virgin's billing systems", or being "sold my details by Virgin" (or insert the name of any mobile operator here, and the story is exactly the same).. they don't have any more information than this.

We got a call from Talk Talk too. Very annoying but politely ended the call. I have a relative who had no phone for weeks due to their poor service.

The TPS is nowhere near as effective as it seemed to be a few years ago.
I was with BT in a non cabled area and it worked and was very rare we had cold calls.
Then we moved 3 years ago and I have put my Virgin number in there and I have never known so many calls!
I even registered twice just to make sure.

It's got so bad I'm really tempted by the called id but don't want to pay £2 a month for it when I had it for free with BT.

We do not get any marketing calls whatsoever and I am registered with TPS, we also get no advertising letters addressed to our names as we are registered with MPS.

Welshchris 25-01-2011 15:10

Re: has virgin got mole in billing

the MPS, does that go by name and address or just address? reason i ask is i am registered on my name and address here yet i still get a lot of letters from EON and Talk Talk for the ex occupant who died. Although i have informed them of this and they say they will take the address off the mailing list they still persist and its been over 2 years now.

They are probably just posting from their billing database which has not been updated, all I would do is write "This person is deceased and no longer lives here" on the outside of the envelope and stick them in the post box and forget about wasting money calling them as they are usually 0845 numbers.

Or collect quite a few and fill a large envelope put the return address on the outside and post it without any stamps as they will have to pay the postage.

Never ring but send everything back in an unstamped envelope it may not stop but at least you are annoying them in some way, never phone unless it is a freefone number.

Welshchris 26-01-2011 01:40

Re: has virgin got mole in billing

Virgin are another good one tho for not stopping.

Mail addressed to me is still sent to my parents address and ive not lived there since feb 2006. I have requested twice by phone to be taken off their mailing list on that address and still it carries on.

Re: has virgin got mole in billing

Used to get regular mailings from Talk Talk even though we are registered with MPS, so I sent it back stating not known at this address, no mailings since.

As for other junk mail like Masque I send it back any return envelope they supply or a envelope without stamps on. Been doing it for years keeps the Post Office in work!!!!
