Poor Picture Quality on ITV3

Watched a few programs on ITV3 over the weekend & the picture quality through my V+HD box was terrible. The picture kept breaking up & pixallating ( not sure if I've spelt that right but I'm sure you know what I mean! ).

Switched to the Freeview built into my TV & the picture was much better.

The picture quailty on ITV3 has never been brilliant especially on older programs but I have never seen it this bad.

Any body else had the same problem or should I call VM support?

Yes, i've had the pixelating problem on ITV 3, maybe it's because you have the Samsung V+HD STB which in my opinion has inferior picture quality at upscaling Standard-definition TV when compared to the Scientific Atlanta V+HD STB.

I have the Samsung too, no problems here.

no problem at VM towers either. The OP is fed from the same RHE (Regional Headend) as Mersey70 too.

If probs persist then I recomment a call to Support for the OP.

It's funny, I noticed exactly the same thing on ITV3 last night. No problem with any other channels though. Not enough of a problem to completely ruin watching but enough to be annoying. Unfortunatly I've not watched ITV3 in ages so can't say if it happens often or not.

Will keep a closer eye on it in future.

May have been a glitch. What general area are you in? :)

I'm in Cambridgeshire. Not too worried about it though as it wasn't a problem on other channels. If it does become a big problem I'll call up support. :-)

Post on here too if you can. If I'm able to, then I can do some platform checks. :)

ITV3 hasn't been brilliant here of late either (Ipswich)

I'm in Sale, Cheshire.

You mention the OP, sorry if this is obvious to others but what does it stand for?

Its not been good in Winchester for a while now.

Thanks all, will keep an eye on this. Some picture quality could be down to the source material though.

Same poor quality here (Sale, Manchester). I was watching Sherlock Holmes, the scene was foggy London, and was pixallating (spelling borrowed from PC49) very badly.

Re: Poor Picture Quality on ITV3

Thought I would update this as I raised the original problem.

Watched ITV3 last night ( Saturday ). The pixalation problem is totally random. The picture can be reasonable for a while & then pixalates for a few seconds. This happens on both the program & the adverts, so I don't think we can blame old programs for this one. Checked the same station through the Freeview built into the telly & that was fine.

I am tempted to get an engineer out but I'm not sure what he can do about it as I am not having the problem on other channels.

We've not noticed anything at VM, so I think a call to Support is required. Pixallation on 1 channel can be a National, Regional, box type or a poor signal level affecting that particular group of channels on your connection.

I'm not in work at the moment, so can't check the transport stream it's on. Other channels may be affected, but you may not watch them and they may be on the same transport stream.

spiderplant 23-01-2011 21:13

Re: Poor Picture Quality on ITV3

These are the other channels on that transport stream, so I would expect all these to be affected.

ITV3 +1
ESPN
ESPN America
ESPN Classic
Racing UK
LFCTV
euronews
Nick Jr 2
Best Direct

It does seem likely to be a signal fault. Check the cable connections are tightened properly. If that doesn't fix it, get on the phone.

I noticed this problem on ITV3 this morning too. Very poor picture, pixellation occurring very regularly.
I noticed a little pixellation on BBC One HD on Friday night too. Plus the VOD I have watched so far has been appalling quality (mostly music videos).

Only just switched from SkyHD, so not the most impressive of starts. Overall, I have to say most of the channels appear poorer quality than they did on SkyHD.
:(

They shouldn't be like that, OLDGOLD. I would suggest a call to Support.

Thanks Digital Fanatic. I'll have to get on to them.

Re: Poor Picture Quality on all except HD

I'm beginning to wonder if my v+ box is dodgy. Picture on most channels is pixellated. For example, recorded Sky at Night off BBC4 on Tuesday and the recording is very grainy, way worse than off the iPlayer. Def is V+ box as a freeze frame shows the grain/pixellating. On the other hand HD content is fine. Maybe Virgin downgraded their bit rates?

Any ideas?

46" Samsung 1080i, v+ HMDI set as 1080.

I have a 46" TV too and I have to say regarding PQ that BBC Four is consistently one of the better SD channels in my opinion.

I have several BBC Four recordings too and they also seem fine.

LFC tv picture is bad for pixilating any program on there even a virgin engineer said it was bad.

pabscars 10-03-2011 12:38

Re: Poor Picture Quality on ITV3

The only channel I've noticed a poor blocky picture on is ITV2+1, mainly because this is all I use for the couple of hours I watch TV a day.

Its fine on my Sky+ and freeview, so it must be an issue with my SA V+ box or possibly a transport stream issue, given my levels are fine.

Now that I will definitely agree with, it is shocking!. But I do not necessarily think it is anything to do with VM.

It is atrocious on Sky too, it's just appears to use very low bandwidth but as it is FTV on Sky maybe they cut costs where they can.

When Setanta went belly up LFC TV and Arsenal TV were part of their package. Arsenal TV soon closed as a linear broadcast channel but at least LFC TV continued so I have no major gripes really except maybe VM place it in the XL pack.

as far as the engineer told me it LFC TV Fault, not virgin media's and he watches the channel himself and he said it bad. i no ITV 2 is bad for pixilating had engineer round for that and everything was fine my end.

I agree it must just be the feed LFC TV supply VM.

Whilst it is not great on satellite either it seems more 'smudged' than pixellated to me, if that makes sense.

I never noticed any real problems on ITV2, and I said earlier in the thread on ITV3 either.

Re: Poor Picture Quality on ITV3

For nearly all the channels that I can also get on Freeview, the picture quality is better there, never mind ITV3. Virgin is poor with artefacting and grain.
