BBC Radio 4 to launch Extra station.

The BBC is preparing to forge ahead with plans to rebrand digital station Radio 7 as a spinoff network to Radio 4, but the move is expected to face opposition from the industry.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the new station will launch (in) spring (2011) and broadcast a schedule more closely aligned to Radio 4.

Does anyone have any credible information of talks going on between VM and Sky for the Sky Atlantic channel?

Does anyone know for sure the nature of the agreement between VM and Sky in respect of options for VM to carry any future channels launched by Sky in the future?

Or that January could have been the original date, on big projects things change daily and launch dates get pushed back all the time.

I really hope your right, always good to get more HD channels, hope we get a slice of Sky Atlantic and the HD version would be great. Also hope we get Sky Sports HD 1 and HD2.

I wonder if Sky will launch Sky Movies Prem HD +1 or is that a waste of bandwidth?

Happy New year all.

I'd like to believe the recent "coming soon" posts and winking emotions by Virgin staff members mean we'll be getting it sooner than that. I'll certainly be disappointed if we don't at least get an announcement by the end of the month.

I personally believe it's rather bad form to announce this stuff is coming in the form of an all singing, all dancing press release in June 2010 and for no further update to come since then. Either it's an error in the initial press release, or something has been renegotiated since them, but a bit more openness would be nice. IIRC, the only suggestion of Red Button content in 2011 came from one line in a Sky official website article.

IIRC the OFCOM agreement meant that Sky had to offer it, and I believe that the delay is due to technical issues because of platform incompatabilities, rather than any negotiation issues.

That would sound about right to me.

Its funny though QVC,BBC,ITV all get their red button services working on VM i wonder just how incompatable the sky sports red button is with virgin medias platform if its taking all this time to impliment.? although i am hopeful it will arrive very soon please.:erm:

Well on sky sports match choice you can pick which game you want and record it i guess it is a bit different coding on vms network. So there could be the delay.

Will this red button work on all Sky Sports Ie when games are available behind the red button eg Champions league and NFL. VM are still advertising the XL TV pack as 160 channels is this correct with the loss of the Sky bought channels ?

The expectation is that the SD channel will be available on BSkyB satellite, Virgin Media cable, FreeView DTT and possibly elsewhere. Also, they state that it will be 'an exclusive home' to some programming, meaning that those shows will not be available on other channels but may be available to other platforms on Sky Atlantic channel.

Not a very good start to the new year with the sky sports red button which was suppose to come in jan according to informed sources now likely to come at the end of april, typical Virgin and we are still waiting for more channels what with losing some channels on the 1st of jan and more at the end of jan.

Thanks for that gadge, yes you could well be right about it being to do with the coding on vms network and would require a box update which could take a while writing,i think the most disappointing thing is a lack of information such "as we are working hard and hope to have it by xxxxx date",that would at least let customers know it was somewhere in the pipeline i have no duubt its being worked on,but like on so many occasions vm do not seem to communicate very effectively with their customers.

Having said that its still not beyond the realms of possiblilty it will be here very soon.:)

Thanks Media Boy hopefully in time for the cricket world cup, which sky intend to have some matches on under the Red Button where they clash,ie two matches being played at the same time and sky only showing one on sky sports1/2.

the Sky Sports red button could also be delayed because of Tivo. That is a whole new interface and I would assume they would need to code the red button for Tivo and also the current V+.

I wonder if VM would consider making this a Tivo only service to try to get more people to upgrade to that box

There probably be a point in the next couple of years where the TiVo box will become the standard V+ & VHD stb. It is a premium product at the moment but I am sure VM would like us all on TiVo sooner rather than later!

If they're wanting us all to move to TiVo, can they force a box to be replaced? I couldn't live without Component Out. Unless they're paying for a HDFury as well and they can gladly swap it.

To use a very common VM phrase COMING SOON (which generally means god knows when) the same as the ITV HD channels , ESPNA HD , SKY NEWS HD you get the drift LOL :-)

I hope you are not right on that but I am hoping Sky Arts HD will soon find it's way onto VM, after all Sky and VM have said it will, albeit months ago.

Obviously we are not getting Atlantic, is it just a strange coincidence that Atlantic launches at around the same time of the probable Tivo launch? I doubt it!

My insider told me this months ago but I hold this back until now.

We may get Sky Arts 1 HD.

With Sky Arts 2 HD not launching making way for Sky Atlantic HD to launch.

Also if Virgin cant get Sky Atlantic they may axe Sky3 to make way for it to launch.

I would be amazed if we see Sky Atlantic on VM anytime soon, SD or HD.

The promos certainly don't suggest it.

Agreed can't see it launching on VM in 2011. ESPNA HD was mentioned ages ago and still nothing. Why do VM Chase this Sky trash when there's loads of available HD channels up for grabs (non Sky)

Do not know if anyone else noticed this today but before i had to go out today my partner had switched over to HISTORY channel at about 10.20am and it had the HISTORY HD dog at the bottom right had corner instead of the HISTORY dog at the top left.

Do not know if they have got the feed wrong but the channel since i got back is the normal dog:confused:

And also the website is still saying that we get HISTORY+1 on channel 235?

Confused by this, why would dropping Sky 3 help us get Sky Atlantic? If it was a question of number of channels surely it could replace Bravo etc.

It doesn't make a great deal of sense, but MB can only report what he's been told. That was before Sky Atlantic HD was announced as a "Sky exclusive" so it's probably out of date now.
Three Bravo slots and Challenge Jackpot have all closed now, so there's plenty of SD capacity. ITV+1 will take one slot. I'd hope Sky Atlantic would have another. When does Channel One close? That's far enough up the EPG to make it an attractive slot, especially as it falls just below Sky 1 (119 and 120)

notice he specifically mentioned HD. My gut feeling is that for Sky to claw back the money they've spent buying all these exclusive series they will give VM Atlantic SD...maybe not on launch but soon after.

We aren't getting it, well not from launch anyway.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...ardwalk-empire

The guy who wrote the article, John Plunkett, who interviewed Stuart Murphy, the director of programmes for Sky 1 and Sky Atlantic posted the following comment later on the same page as his article.

"Thanks for comments. Re: distribution, Sky Atlantic will only be on Sky platform, not Virgin Media. At least, not yet, and certainly not for launch. Will be 108 in the newly rejigged EPG, beneath Sky 1 (which remains at 106) and Sky Living, at 107. Distraught Sky2 and Sky3 fans are going to have to trawl further down the EPG."

@MisterFusty there is not currently a deal in place with Virgin Media.

AND

It'll be Sky only I'm afraid, they have confirmed on their twitter feed that "there's not currently a deal in place with Virgin Media"

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.

SKY's press release today about SKY Atlantic.

http://corporate.sky.com/media/press...ltantic_HD.htm

"Sky Atlantic HD to bring the very best in entertainment and drama exclusively to Sky customers from 1st February 2011
Sky today confirmed the eagerly awaited launch of Sky Atlantic HD – a brand new channel that will provide the very best in entertainment, drama and films to Sky customers across the UK and Ireland. Bringing together innovative and distinctive original productions from home and abroad, Sky Atlantic will be free and exclusive to all 10 million Sky customers from its launch on 1 st February 2011."

I think this is the first time SKY have referred to the channel as SKY Atlantic, not SKY Atlantic HD in any of their previous communications.
