Tablet Style devices
I thought about starting a thread regarding a particular tablet style device, but wondered whether a more general one would be more useful?
If the mods disagree then please advise? The idea is that there are so many of these kind of devices becoming available this thread will be an opportunity to discuss them without having a separate thread for each one? I'm thinking about kit like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak, Linx N700 & the Archos 101... For example I was looking at the Linx N700 in Tesco, today for £299 & wondered, would it work with my bog standard tesco mobile 'value' payg sim card from my Nokia 3310? |
Re: Tablet Style devices
What is a tablet style device?

- the Apple i-pad is one example. - not quite correct, but one definition might be a smart phone with a bigger screen. |
Re: Tablet Style devices
Ah right. Thanks for that explaination. If you can any chance of a link please so I can get the full picture of what it is if you dont mind?

Re: Tablet Style devices
That looks really good. Wouldn't mind one of them myself ;)
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
In theory I would expect it to work with a sim that has a data tariff and a data service available to it. I would be surprised if tesco were selling items that they couldn't bundle together to make even more money from customers lol

Re: Tablet Style devices
I've got my hands on the Galaxy yesterday. Its size makes it a very expensive media player. Handy for the planes and video conferencing with Mrs Gaz when you're away.
If you are happy with the 7" size then the Linx looks good value with similar specs to the Galaxy but almost half the price. For me though I think size does matter and so i'd go for the 10" Archos. There are loads more coming so you might want to hang back and see what happens. |
Re: Tablet Style devices
I must admit I also like the look of the Archos 101.
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
I will be buying the Archos 101 but they are a little like rocking horse poop in the UK. The Dixons group had them listed in stock but then the website took them down. Everyone else is saying stock by the end of the month. I will be using my Galaxy S in wireless router mode when mobile so no need for a data package either which is cool

Re: Tablet Style devices
I've got a slightly eaarlier version Archos - the Internet Tablet 5. It does what it says on the tin ;) 500GB storage means you are never going to run out of stuff to watch, and it's a plenty big enough screen to view when your crammed into that aircraft seat, whilst still being able to fit in your pocket. Battery life does not get to the 7 hours video claimed even with the add on battery thing that is supposed to give 1.5 times the lifespan. Once I'd paid the extra for the add on codecs, I've not had a problem with playback of any content that I've acquired. Perhaps the only thing missing was the 3G support, but then most places you stay these days have wi-fi, so why do I need more mobility?
Personally, I want want of these things to have a decent level of storage for media. Most of these tablets are just not going to be big enough. |
Re: Tablet Style devices
the Archos 101 has full USB support so if you were going somewhere you need more than its 8/16 gig internal and upto 32 gig microsdhc you could take a 2.5 inch external drive and use that

I did chuckle at the spelling mistake on the front of the first units though ;) the archos 101 internet table :) |
Re: Tablet Style devices
I didn't know Android handled external drives. That is smart.
BTW Advent (PC World own brand) are also doing their own tablet. 10" and around the £250 mark. |
Re: Tablet Style devices
I'm also going to get a 10" Android tablet - can't see the point of the smaller sizes.
But I'm holding out until Spring to give the early adopters a chance to find the bugs :) |
Re: Tablet Style devices
I am getting a Toshiba Folio 10" on evaluation next week, hopefully - I will feedback my thoughts.
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
Not strictly a 'tablet pc' but I thought it might be worth pointing out that I have tried internet access on my Kindle 3g in Italy, Holland & Denmark, recently - with no problems. OK it can be a bit slow & clunky, but for checking gmail & BBC news it has proved invaluable.

Acer have just announced they are releasing a tablet early next year

The Archos appears to be available at a couple of places if you use Google shopping search. I am a bit nervous though about using one of the lesser known outlets.
Anyone heard of simplyelectronics?? http://www.simplyelectronics.net/checkout.php |

Re: Tablet Style devices
I've just read up a bit on the Archos 101. Looks good. Bigger than the Galaxy Tab, but half the price.
I'm still waiting until next year, though, before I take the tablet plunge. iPad 2 will probably be announced in early-ish 2011, plus the Android tablets should have matured. |

Then Amazon allowed 'switching' the device registration to the UK & it worked fine with full web access where-ever a 3G/edge signal was available. That continued with the Kindle 3 - and I'm pleased to say has been functional in Italy, Denmark & Holland, so far, also. In the context of the thread this functionality of the kindle does not (currently) incur any extra charges. Access to email, news, blogs, etc is completely free - whereas I would imagine a sim card in an android tablet, for example, would attract data charges - especially when roaming ??? I'm not suggesting a Kindle can 100% 'substitute' for a tablet device, but urge people to consider whether it might be functional enough for what they actually need, especially when travelling :) |
Re: Tablet Style devices
Now this is interesting...
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/l...e/ntablet.html Atom 1.6ghz 32gb SSD 3G connectivity N WiFi Multi-touch capacitive Any OS And for £349. I'd like to know what brand it is underneath and the reviews but its impressive specced. |
Re: Tablet Style devices
It wont run with any OS surely? there will have to be driver support and compatability to run the touchscreen.
Legally installing Windows 7 will take the price well over £400. There is another device out there of these spec running Andriod and Win 7 whats the betting its a bare one of those? ---------- Post added at 22:13 ---------- Previous post was at 22:12 ---------- http://www.which.co.uk/technology/co...ndroid-tablet/ perhaps this one for example ---------- Post added at 22:13 ---------- Previous post was at 22:13 ---------- http://www.which.co.uk/technology/co...ad-100-tablet/ actually it looks very much like the viewsonic |
Re: Tablet Style devices
Linux as well as Android are free.
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
Yeah but there is no garrentee any old distro will run. And unless it is the viewsonic a fully compatable Android would not have been written either and would in both instances require devs for that device I believe?
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
the innerds of the device are standard netbook stuff so virtually any linux OS with a netbook variant will support it.
Reviews of the device mention Android so it is compatible. Reading between the lines the OS-less version seems to come with Android 2.2 by default. Then you add another OS and dual-boot. It does look very similar to the ViewSonic and the Tega but cheaper. Some people complain about the screen not being accurate but I think that's due to Windows not being built for touchscreen devices? |
Re: Tablet Style devices
Win 7 is fully touch screen compliant iirc :-)

Re: Tablet Style devices
What ZrByte said. Even XP had touch input drivers. Win7 comes with drivers pre-installed but it's still designed to be operated by a mouse. It's not the same as Android and other phone OSes where touch input is the sole method of input.

<edit> it doesn't seem to have an 'ordinary' network cable (rj45) slot, which means a wireless router would be needed to connect to my 'home' network ... that is a big disadvantage, I much prefer a wired connection ?? |

Re: Tablet Style devices
Motorola are rumored to be developing the first tablet for android 3.0 (Honeycomb)
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
so whats left? full linux or windows? Most likely windows dont you think? its gotta be something with some kinda app lib or as in the case of windows vast compatability with regular software. Anything with out app support will just crash and burn.
It could always be a rewritten android with better support for different features? |

Re: Tablet Style devices
So, after the sudden emergence of the tablet market in 2010, thanks to the iPad, I think the tablet market is going to *really* take off in 2011.
As well as the inevitable iPad 2 in a few months, the iPad's competition is finally getting serious. This year will see several new tablets using Android 3.0 (Honeycomb, the version meant for tablets), along with the BlackBerry PlayBook and other devices. Here's an Android 3 preview video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-80QD5Zjyc Lots of stuff has already been shown off at this year's CES in Las Vegas. Anyone seen anything yet which has piqued their interest? |
Re: Tablet Style devices
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
none of them are gonna be real cheap though are they lets face it. But that Xoom looks good
If I find my Archos invaluble then I will most likely invest in a Honeycomb tablet but if it does not then obviously I wont. At least if I dont use the Archos it aint cost a monkey |
Re: Tablet Style devices
Yeah, price is obviously an issue!
If the Galaxy Tab costs around the same as the iPad, I hate to think what the PlayBook & Xoom would cost... I expect that the mobile networks will offer subsidised tablets (as they do now with the iPad, & as they do in the US with the Tab)... but how many people really want *another* monthly contract? I bloody don't, that's for sure. I already have a mobile phone contract, there's no way I'd take out a mobile data contract as well just to get a subsidised iPad/Tab/Xoom/PlayBook etc. |
Re: Tablet Style devices
Same as Matt there is no chance. At the end of the day I only want it to save my PC being on just to browse the web and a bit of research so its a green option for me lol Ive never kept a laptop long so I dunno if I actually want a mobile computer. All the devices on the market now are not computers they are mobile media devices which is a different product. Honeycomb to me along with the spec of the hardware make the devices Tablet Computers :-)

Re: Tablet Style devices
wait till xoom mark 2 and buy the older version second hand or eol. I dunno where these companies heads are at imo the ipad is overpriced but you get a nice well built unit. Dunno where they think the market id for this.
I have to admit although I like my Archos 101 it hardly gets used apart from when I show it someone else. Waste of money yes but not £500 fortunately |
Re: Tablet Style devices
Xoom price confirmed:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/16/m...n-verizon-600/ $799 for the 32GB WiFi+3G model, $600 for WiFi only. |
Re: Tablet Style devices
oh well lol I hardly use the Archos an upgrade to this aint gonna happen lol

Re: Tablet Style devices
Hello, Moto...
Reviews of the first decent non-Apple tablet: The Motorola Xoom, running Google Android "Honeycomb". 10.1 inch screen with a 1280x800 resolution, 1GB RAM, 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC (dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU plus a GeForce ULP GPU), 32GB storage, etc. etc. etc. http://www.crunchgear.com/2011/02/23...let-redefined/ http://www.anandtech.com/show/4191/m...blet-arrives/1 http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/23/m...a-xoom-review/ Impressive... Most impressive... However... still hampered by the price, as mentioned earlier in this thread. European release is due in "Q2" of 2011 |
Re: Tablet Style devices
The Xoom has finally been priced & dated for the UK.
9th of April launch, with a price tag of £499 for the 32GB WiFi-only model. http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/02/m...t-500-promise/ That puts it on a par price-wise with the 32GB WiFi-only iPad 2, due on the 25th of March. |
Re: Tablet Style devices
The 32GB WiFi+3G version of the Xoom has now been priced: £599 at Carephone Warehouse (exclusive).
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
its at least 200 quid to expensive imo :)
|
Re: Tablet Style devices
Agreed - compete on price/functionality, as they can't compete on image.

Re: Tablet Style devices
And the next tablet contenders are... Amazon & Sony
Sony Quote:
Amazon Quote:
These figures from the Amazon story made me laugh: Quote:
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still retailing at the same price as the iPad 2... Don't know what the sales are like, but I'd imagine they're significantly lower than those of the iPad 2 (although probably not as low as the PlayBook's! ). Thoughts? Will Apple finally see some serious competition in the tablet market from Sony and/or Amazon, or will they each merely be the latest victims to fall beneath the mighty iPad? I don't particularly like agreeing with "analysts", but I think good points are made regarding price. If Sony's comes out at the same price as the iPad 2, I think it will suffer a similar fate to all the other high-end Android tablets released at that price, while if Amazon does sell its one at a loss it may actually be a genuine competitor. |
