They did the same with the Raoul Moat story. Somebody mocked up a "Grand Theft Auto: Rothbury" game cover and naturally it spread around the net. The Daily Star printed a serious story about Rockstar making a GTA game based on Raoul Moat, and there'd be films etc too.
