Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

Right,

MOD Edit [No need to speak to people like that] , here is what I know.

ITV 2 HD (In talks but Virgin don't consider this one a main priority)
ESPN America (In talks)
ESPN 2, ESPN News, ESPN Classic on demand (in talks for when the 1st two launch)
Quest + 1, Comedy Central +1, Russia Today (before the end of year, was meant to be this month)
BBC Alba (by the end of this year/start of next)
Movies for Men 1/2 (in talks)

If anyone can fill me in on the latest with Premier Sports I would be grateful

nope but with BBC1HD coming they will hopefully upgrade their studio cameras. I doubt they will upgrade their hundreds of foreign cameras in other countries as that would cost too much.

At the risk of going off topic in this thread - mods please delete if they consider this the case - can we PLEASE keep posts focused on the subject of what IS 'coming soon' - not endless winging about whether it isn't.

I want to refer to this thread for information - I don't want to wade through endless posts bemoaning the absence of channels in comparison with Sky, I want to use it to find out which ones I can get with Virgin Media.

It was certainly showing in catch up as member posted screenshots in the previous coming soon thread who I think was on the Basildon headend, I know 'Cowboy Builders' was one of the programmes although he/she could not actually view it, most people reported that it was not showing on their stb's though, me included so it must have been a localised test.

Or asking when a particular channel is coming when all they have to do is look back to Media Boy's latest weekly summary to find the up-to-date situation.

Regarding the upcoming launch of BBC 1 HD, will this channel just be added to the channel list, at say 114, whilst keeping the regional BBC 1 station at channel 101. Basically in a similar way to the ITV 1 HD channel.

I have not been told any numbers for BBC One HD from my insiders yet.

But I think Virgin may move all the LIVING channels and ITV HD up one and put BBC One HD on Channel 108 with BBC HD moving to Channel 109.

I've been informed that Virgin will get Sky Atlantic. Cannot confirm what date but at some point next year.

ESPN may announce in the next few weeks the launch of ESPN 2 which will be avaliable on all platforms.

If Virgin has sign an deal to carry ESPN 2 that will mean ESPN America HD will launch.

But as far as I know talks are still ''Ongoing''.

http://www.itv.com/presscentre/press...y/default.html The Keywords( Will launch exclusively) which to me just means it will only be on Sky at launch leaving the door open for other platforms , so in my opinion and things I've heard I would look at a November launch on VM. ;)

The article makes interesting reading and yes sky though their sheer financial might are hoovering uo on demand content, which it could be argued is bad for consumers, what i fail to understand is and perhaps they could not do it, but why do virgin and BT both of which have on demand services not get together and buy on demand content that they could both show on their respective platforms.

Quite honestly nobody can match skys financial might and ofcom abjectly fail to regulate in a proper fashion on consumers behalf and when they do sky tend to try to run rings around them.

The only way the other companies may be able to compete in this skewed market place would be to try and do deals together.

TV On Demand is hyped up way too much as most of the programmes were rubbish when first aired.....You do get gems like the Office, The Sopranos and The Royle Family, but in all honesty you could play the parts.

Virgin have done well in adding HD channels , but there On Demand service is poor in my opinion in fact I would say the choice isn't as good BT Vision and the layout on the EPG is poor. BT also provide trailers for their movie on demand service which would be a welcome addition to filmflex.

Filmflex movies often do have trailers. Select a film, press Info, press Blue for full screen. All the new releases normally have a trailer.
As to the HBO content leaving On Demand: it's been there for years: if you hadn't watched it already by now then that's hardly Virgin's fault. Sky needs something to put on the new Sky Atlantic channel as HBO only has a handful of new series a year, so the HBO back catalogue will effectively become Sky Atlantic.
(And I fully expect VM to carry Sky Atlantic when it launches)

I do not find this nessarily true having just flicked through on demand its got two series of south park hardly rubbish when first aired, planet rock profies, clash of the dinosaurs, cold case sries 6,inbetweeners series 1 to name but a few out of lots of pages.

When there is nothing on the main channels i can always find something worth watching on tv choice on demand,i think for me at least tv on demand is great.

Cannot see what you mean by "in honesty you could play the parts" the throuble is i do not play the parts! but like watching the shows!;)

All this talk doesn't bother me. You can only watch so much TV and we have a great choice on VM. You are in danger of becoming a zombie if all you do is watch TV. TV on demand is handy to have , but It's months since I've used it , tend to use catch up instead.

SKY is a monopoly. Unless we ever move to a non cabled area there is nothing which will entice me to join SKY.

The future is good and that future is TIVO and VM.

I noticed on my mum`s bt vision that they have ABC content. I first got into criminal minds and grey's anatomy etc on virgins On demand but they don't seem to have any of them on there now. Has bt vision got an exclusive deal with ABC? I use virgin media on demand a lot but like a lot of the comments say the same content just gets put on, then removed, then put on there again. Its about time virgin media put more effort into getting vod deals because it is there top selling point and they will end up getting left behind like they did with HD.

Of course its a monopoly of sorts but until ofcom or the competiton comission get their backsides in gear and serparate skys content from sky the platform it will continue, but due to the "politics" of doing that softly softly seems to be the way of dealing with it.:(

I thought VM have the option of carrying any of Sky's basic HD channels, that is what this press release says anyway. I can understand there may be cost issues stopping VM from carrying more but if this statement is correct they are not being withheld from carrying more.

As far as i know and i may be wrong sky arts 1 and 2 HD are the only channels left to come under that "heading" customers wanting sky sports news HD,and sky sports 3 and 4 HD (These although not basic channels definately are being witheld from vm)) are unlikely to see them appearing on vm anytime soon.

There does seem some confusion though as to what skys basic HD channels constitute for example, does this include sky news HD or sky sports news HD who knows?. as far as i know vm have never mentioned this just sky 1 hd (already here) and sky arts HD channels to come.

I would assume a basic HD channel is none of the premium sport or movies channels, obviously I could well be wrong.

It is the paragraph that starts 'For an incremental wholesale fee, Virgin Media will, for the first time, have the option of carrying any of Sky's basic HD channels, Sky Sports HD 1 and Sky Sports HD 2, and all Sky Movies HD channels' that is interesting.

I guess we will never really know what was agreed.

Actually i trust this story completely when it comes to bias in favour of his masters bidding i think Kelvin McKenzie is about as impartial as you could get.LOL:D:D

What are the chances though i wonder of Vince cable letting this one through though,to the detriment of consumers owning the sky operation completely and the sun times et al,could make him the Berlusconi of uk media and posssibly as bad ,all that media power would no doubt be used to stifle competiton even more.

Virgin Media starts BBC One HD tests.

My Virgin Tester has today told me that BBC One HD has appeared on their box.

The BBC has said in the past that BBC One HD will launch on Virgin in November.
