ITV2 next week

In next week's Radio Times (2-8 Oct) from Thursday 7th Oct several ITV2 programmes and films are listed as being HD. Anyone know what this is about?

ITV 2,3,4 are going HD

I think VM will get them too but I haven't heard anything.

ITV2, 3 and 4 HD services are launching as encrypted services on Sky only, to be available in Sky's HD pack. At the time the news was announced there was no mention of whether they have also signed a deal with VM, but history would suggest not.

I don't think you're going to be missing very much. Most of ITV3 and ITV4 is old repeats that weren't even made in HD.

Maybe so, but showing them on the HD channel still improves the quality, even of old Second World War clips.

That depends on how well they do the upscaling ... something which the V+ box already does, by the way. ;)

Just look at Five HD though, we thought that was only going to be on Sky and then it ended up on VM as well on the same launch date

You can't compare the upscaling in the V+ to a professional scaler costing tens of thousands of pounds. Upscaled HD at source will always be better then the V+.

But will it be better enough to warrant all the bruhaha from people who suddenly seem desperate to watch old episodes of The Champions and The Saint in glorious HD?

Well look at it this way, ITV already broadcast what can only be described at bit starved channels, lucky I watch bugger all on them but for those that do the picture quality will be a lot better and when they do have HD content on 3 and 4 at least they can show it in HD.

Agree the picture quality on ITV 3 & 4 is rubbish so HD programming would be an improvement, but has ITV4 (apart from sport) has not got much material to show in HD, they keep on showing old episodes of "The Professionals" though cool is old 4:3 recordings :erm:

I think the point that has been made (by those who care) is that even the old stuff will benefit from some upscaling treatment prior to broadcast.

My own view, however, is that the V+ own upscaling abilities should be more than adequate. You don't watch ancient hokum like Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) for the visual spectacle. In fact, the prospect of Mike Pratt in HD is positively nauseating.

Mind you, there's always Annette Andre ... :D

There is still quite a bit of good TV on 3 and 4, Wire in the Blood and quite a few US dramas alongside Champions League and Europa League football and motorsport beats quite a few channels in terms of quality.
