Government wants access to YOUR bank account

Oh lordy. I mean, I'm sure there'll NEVER be any errors, and never occasions where people have to contact faceless websites and never-answered phonelines to deal with things that used to be sorted out by nipping down to Payroll. |
Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
Given the proportion of the banks which are state owned this was entirely predictable.
I think I mentioned this to Sirius and a few others quite a while ago. |
Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
Not in favour of this.

Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
Reality Check.
It's not a Coalition Government proposal, the proposal is from a discussion paper by HMRC officials - and Government have said "no". |
Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
Seriously, just think of the Gov IT cock ups waiting in the wings if that went ahead...

Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
It was in the Times on Saturday (online version behind a paywall) - I will search for a linky.....
Update - original story in the ToryGraph; I will continue my search for the Coalition repudiation (or refudiation, as Sarah Palin puts it) |
Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
They're welcome to it, there's no damn money in it anyway :(

Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
I like that the first 6 seconds of the video contradict the title of the video and this thread - it's nothing to do with gaining access to people's bank accounts.
It's also nothing to do with coalition government policy, despite the subtext of said video claiming that this is what the coalition government want. This is a consultation by civil servants within the HMRC not government treasury ministers. HMRC are perfectly entitled to run consultations in order to bring the results of those consultations to the government to influence and shape policy. This is an old story that seems to have come back to life. |
Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
Looks like 13 years of Statist Labour nannying and busybodying has rubbed off on the corporate mentality of HMRC. Fortunately nanny has now left the building.

Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
I have looked everywhere and I cannot find anywhere that the government have said no to this proposal.:(

Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
Me, neither - I will see if I can dig the Times out of the recycling bin (it depends what's on top of it.....)

Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
Green paper...not white..but..if mandarins are thinking of it..likely Ministers have okayed it..to test the water..then they can deny it if it goes sour.
tactic often used. I'm not keen on them playing with my money, for exactly the reasons raised in the video. They will make mistakes, people do, and they will be hard to correct once it happens. Someone will suffer, and all you will ultimately get (if lucky)..oops sorry, our mistake. |

I withdraw my comment that the Coalition said "No", as I can't back it up with evidence...... |

Re: Government wants access to YOUR bank account
This idea seems to be a way of closing the tax gap according to the video from post 1 .
One question i have is how accurate is the 'theoreticle' amount of tax to be collected ? |

HMRC have been tasked with "consulting" on the matter and are drawing that to a close this week. If the coalition Government (as a whole) were not interested in running with it I very much doubt - given their concerns over public sector waste - that they would have allowed the consultation and associated expenses to be realized. EDIT Found the Feb link. |
