I get some silly results from the speedtest site, despite clearing my cache and rerunning it several times.

But the old image in my signature is accurate, I get full speed when downloading from local sources and newsgroups.

Upload speeds have been a little strange recently, sometimes only reaching 0.70Mb/s. I did turn the QoS off in the router settings and tried again, i got over 1.0Mb/s after that, not sure if that was a coincidence or not.

Do you mean the difference between wireless g and n rather than does not support 50Mb?

Age of the laptop won't make any difference if using the wireless n adaptor.

Bit of a pointless thread lol.

None of us get 50mb 24 hours a day. The speed will vary all the time between 20-50mbps and because we dont do a speedtest every second of the day its impossible to say we get 50mbps 24/7

Take for example 'Thyroid Help' His speedtest showed he was 20mbps+ off, Cant really say he is not getting 50mb's download because 1) 'Up to 50Mb Speeds' 2) If he retook it later on the chances are it would have shown 48-50mbps.

You could do one test and get 51.07mbps and do a second 3 minutes later and get 28mbps... Nevertheless we are on 50mb and unless there is an issue we get the speed advertised.

Bit of an inanane comment. I have net meter running on my PC which will tell me what my speed is in real time.

I don't need to continually run speed tests, it shows me what it is.

Mind you only because I'm either uploading or downloading but at least I know my connection is rock solid!

Indeed and as you have 'silently' pointed out. I havent took background apps into consideration such as playing an Internet based game or Downloading a movie or whatever it is you play with nowadays.

But Im seeing a lot of 50's in ratio to those who claim they dont get near 50mbps. Which in my opinion completely throws the whole Virgin are crap they dont give us 50mb speeds rant out of the window for trolls.

Yes throw it out. Just look at the poll results. VM do supply 50Mb to the satisfaction of the majority.

Yes there are some customers that have problems but which ISP can state they don't have any?

Don't forget forums like this are mainly for people with problems seeking help which is a drop in the ocean compared to the ISP's customer base which equates to

a) The majority of the vast amount of customers are happy

b) The minority who have encountered problems are more vocal.

c) a+b=clueless customers.

Read it as you will, I will discount c) immediately although admitting there are a lot of customers who are clueless and just use their connection for browsing and emails.(who needs more than 10Mb?)

There are also (a rising tide) of gamers, webmasters etc who know what the connection should be like and even there the majority are happy.

All ISP's will have problems, some sort them out quicker and easier than others. IMO VM lets itself down with their CS services offshore. If you are lucky enough to get through to UK based CS problems seem to be sorted out quicker.

In general VM provide a very good service compared to other ISP's.

No doubt there will be others who disagree.

adzii_nufc 16-09-2010 02:30

Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote

And the people that disagree tend to be the same people that do not recieve 50mb because they have an issue that they wont ring up or try to resolve, they come to a forum like this and moan on and try to ruin the reputation of quite frankly an excellent product.

Well said. I had 50mb for around 12months, couldn't honestly see a difference when browsing, downloading was different but at the end of the day, we just downgraded to 20mb for convience if anything.

50Mb is a stellar product, the best in the UK, we just never took advantage of it really and dropped it in the end.

If its a pointless thread then why post, the fact this thread has already helped a number of people test there speeds and allow them to raise issues with VM - A simply solution of rebooting your moden can solve some if not most issues, but alot of us are not techy and these threads help people quickly.

That is a common with internet protection software etc. They take up a lot of CPU. Just watch your CPU usage when you do a speed test. If it goes a sustained 90% + then your speed test probably will not be accurate.

Virus ware etc can cut your actual download speed. I have given up on Kasperski, Norton and McAfee, opting for MS security essentials. This uses hardly any CPU. Just in case a nasty gets through I keep SpyHunter ready to zap it.

Test 2: 2048K took 3310 ms = 618.7 KB/sec, approx 4950 Kbps, 4.83 Mbps
Test 3: 2048K took 4785 ms = 428 KB/sec, approx 3424 Kbps, 3.34 Mbps
Test 4: 4096K took 11475 ms = 357 KB/sec, approx 2856 Kbps, 2.79 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3543 Kbps, 3.46 Mbps

Amazingly high ping! Are you sure your computer, or other assets on your network, weren't doing something else at the time?

Rock solid as always. Must say though that since they did a 5mb upload trial here and took it off again, my upload has dropped from 1.68 down to 1.45. Roll on return of the 5mb :p:

That was actually one of my better pings. Others were 650+. Nothing else was happening as far as I know, but things look better today. These results are as good as I've ever got, even though they're still short of 50meg.

That is more like it. If you get those high pings again try a tracert to see where the high ping is being accumulated? If it is the first step (possibly 192.168.1.1) then the problem is at your end. I would be surprised it it is across the whole network.

Lack of capacity on the route between you and the server.

I disagree. I have never had a result above 34Mb on TBB either with my 50Mb or trial 200Mb connection. Usually it is far less. (Don't ask for more details, 'cos I ain't telling. We all know the trials exists don't we.) ;)

TBB acknowledge that there are issues with the VM network and their test servers.

eg

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fib...eed-tests.html

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/tbb...the-creek.html

Here is a TBB test result done just now on my 200Mb connection. It is way, way, way below what I get on the reliable trial test server. (Can't show you that either.) The up speed result is also inaccurate.

I said that the TBB tester could handle 200Mbps and upwards without issues - there's nothing they can do if there's insufficient capacity between them and VM. The issues with the TBB tester and VM customers are due to a lack of bandwidth on the VM side of the link to TBB. This doesn't just affect TBB it's actually to one of the LINX LANs.

In the items you copy/pasted you'll note that it's clearly stated the issues are with VM, not TBB....

Quote:

VM has some routing issues to our servers, it has been pointed out to them, but looks like they've not implemented the fix yet
Quote:

There are some known congestion issues with one ISP and the route often used to reach us, it is beyond our control, but we did investigate and report a solution they could use.
Guess who the ISP is?

Also the guy on the Post Office service's issue with the tester was transient - TBB did nothing and it fixed itself. Probably a problem on the BT Wholesale network.

If you're on the 20 or 50Mbit variations of the 200M trial I can also easily believe that there are inaccuracies upstream - to get an accurate upstream speed requires a reasonably functional downstream path.

I think we are agreeing. You said 'without' issues', but clearly there are issues, regardless of whose fault they are. VM would do well not to complain about their stats being misrepresented until they sort that issue out. Thing is, unless the test servers can be accessed with only 3 steps, router -> headend -> testserver, with a ping <3ms then there will always be access issues to one degree or another.

No I specifically said the TBB tester could handle 200Mbps, said nothing about the intervening networks and routes on the way.

Mr Telford was blaming the TBB tester for his poor speedtest which isn't the case.

Incidentally not having a test server sitting at your headend doesn't inevitably cause access issues to one degree or another. While you guys on trials get a speed tester stuck into your headend everyone else whose performance is measured goes onto the Samknows testing which is off network.

Your speedtest is purely devoted to measuring your access network performance for feedback to the trials team, it is pointless for anything else as the Internet doesn't live at Coventry headend :)

Please don't use test servers as a true indication of your actual speed. Most will be wrong. London is a better one, but 350 miles is a long way.

Try downloading some big files from a free trial games sites all at the same time. The totalled speed will be a better indicator.

I never stated that speed test servers were a true indication of speed or connection the only method VM recommend is downloads from their own game servers not other free ones.

I merely pointed the OP to the London server as it gives the most consistant results of those available on that particular site. 350miles is not a long way in terms of BB just look at the difference in the ping in both his posts.

I will advise him however to open his own thread and post his modem stats and log files so we can have a look.

BTW XP and Win7 are about equal in the use of rescources, Win7 is basically a vista GUI with an XP engine under the hood.
