Going to hotel with no WiFi

As the title says going to a hotel with no Wifi. Can anyone tell advise me please what I can do to connect to the internet. I'm in Ireland so the choice of Networks I have are O2 Meteor which and Vodofone and also 3G.

I dont know if I have posted in the right thread or not for my problem

Re: Going to hotel with no WiFi

Try this for 39.99 euros including 20 euros credit a USB modem that plugs into your laptop that can be used anywhere.;)

You can choose any colour that you like as well.

I had no access to wi-fi on my holiday I used my Orange PAYG phone on Dolphin plan which gave me 100MB per monthe for £10, and connected my phone to my laptops.

Has you phone got this option.

Some phones have this capability but it depends on Meteors coverage at the hotel you are staying in.

I would have good coverage with the phone I have but not with the dongle they told me :(

My network provider. The place that we are going to we have been there before and I had good coverage with the Network I use for my mobile. I asked them the other day about a dongle and they said that they have not covered that area yet so the coverage is not sorted out yet :(

But it's the same technology. Your dongle is just like a mini mobile phone that happens to just do data (although could quite easily do texts and phonecalls with the right software on your computer!).

Ya I know but they said that the coverage is bad when I went to buy one and told them were I was going they just said it wouldn't be anygood because of coverage

dongles are available from several providers, the coverage provided by your mobile provider is irrelevant except to realise not to buy a dongle using their network if they say it hasn't been sorted out for the area you want.

The thing is that with a dongle you can use your laptop to access the internet, you can have all the same bookmarks, passwords, etc as the same laptop on your your 'home' connection, plus use a mouse & have a decent display.

The only problem, then, is to find a dongle from a provider with coverage in the area you are visiting :)

Masque had given me the name of a provider so tomorrow I'm going to go and see will they have coverage for the Area.

I definitly will. I'm hoping that I will be able to get one that will have the coverage I need.

While the hotel has no WiFi have you checked if they have wired access? I've stayed in hotels before where they offered wired access in the rooms.

Sasha222 30-08-2010 17:17

Re: Going to hotel with no WiFi

Ya checked with the hotel as well and they have nothing. I checked all the networks as well and there dongle wont give me coverage so looks like I will have to let my laptop at home

Oh defirish what will you do, we will have to send you for therapy when you get back. I will be standing by to pour you a stiff drink as soon as you get back sweetie, try to enjoy your time away even if you can't keep in contact. :D

Just don't forget to take your laptop charger! :P

Check which mobile broadband provider gives the best speeds(hi speed) and then get a pay as you go dongle, i use 3 and for £10 topup it lasts 30days. ;)

OK I'll make sure I have lots of Ice cubes handy to stiffen up your water. :D

Shame the coverage over there isn't as good as in the UK. It may be worth taking your laptop and charger just in case. You could try it out and always leave it locked in the car boot if there really isn't any coverage.

Jo hold of with the stiff water with the Ice cubes. 3G have cover where I'm going. Yesssssssssssssssssss. Jo cancel the stiff water with the Ice cubes :D

You can be sure I wont.

SnoopZ 30-08-2010 19:03

Re: Going to hotel with no WiFi

Are we talking about Network 3 here?

If so then the 1GB pay as you go dongle is probably what you want then which costs £29.99 and a £10 topup lasts 30 days, although this is pre loaded with £10 which makes it even cheaper!

NOTE this offer is valid until tomorrow!

I've done better than that. I'm being giving a loan of one for the weekend and all I have to do is put 10euro credit on it. Happy days. I dont know what speed it takes. How would I test it for the speed

Best thing to do is go into a hi speed area and try it out! ;)

Also have you checked the map to make sure you're in a hi-speed area based on the post code?

Re: Going to hotel with no WiFi

Forget the dongle if your phone supports 3G. I use Joikuspot. It's an app you install on the phone (S60 Nokia 5800 in my case) that allows it to be used as a hotspot. You have to pay (about a tenner) for the version that allows WEP between the laptop & phone.
Works a treat and if you are not on for too long, the WEP weakness isn't a problem. You also have a network meter so it should be pretty obvious if your connection has been hijacked.

I use my mobile phone (N5800) as a wifi hot spot using joikuspot to either the iTouch or laptop. Works well for me as I hate using the 5800 for net use.

Re: Going to hotel with no WiFi

My mobile phone is just a basic one so dont think I would be able to do anything for with the laptop and coverage for me.

Take the battery out of the mobile & leave the back off so it can dry out - even blast it with a hair dryer - you may get it back? No guarantees, though - there was a feature about this on the 'gadget show' recently ;)

I think I'ts gone beyond that as the glass has a crack on it but the waitress took it apart and put it into the hottest part of the kitchen. Hopefully it will have dryed out by the morning but not holding out much hope as nearly half a bottle of water went on it before I noticed it

best way to get a phone back that's been wet - put it in a jar with rice, seal the lid and leave it in a warm place for a day or so. Rice is hydroscopic - it will suck the moisture out of the phone.

The battery however may be toast.

Thanks Gazan. Also It's great to be home as well with the ordinary internet as I found the dongle very tepmermental and kept going on and of. I was staring to lose patience with it. I had two bars on it so would that have anything to do with it. Next time that I do go away I just couldn't be bothered putting myself throgh that again trying to get it to keep getting it to connect

yup, only two bars means a borderline signal, not a surprise given the nearby mountains - unfortunately you are at the mercy of the provider putting in repeaters - glad you had a nice time, though :)
