PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

didn't take that long crack did it

Now a group called PSJailbreak says it will release a USB dongle containing software that allows users to save games to the console's hard drive.

However, a distributor for the dongle said that he had tested it and would start selling the device "in the next two weeks".

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

Probably just a little too late. I'd imagine that the recent judgement against R4 cards for use with nintendo ds would also cover these dongles.

As I understand it, it's no longer legal to advertise these in this country. I'm sure the hackers will try to get round it but Sony are usually pretty quick to react.

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

I was under the impression that you could already save games to the hard drive, just like the 360, or am I missing something here?

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

Save complete (copied) game to the hard drive - not saved games.

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

at the moment its only possible to save partial game data or game saves on the HD , but this could change that, so full games could be dumped straight on the HD

The mod actually comes on a USB stick, which, if inserted into the PS3 before the console is turned on, will disable system security, and allow users to backup games on the hard drive, or run third-party software.

It's been claimed a couple times now but this is looking the most legit so far. Seen a couple videos of it supposedly working but I'll wait for more evidence before am convinced.

Almost 4 years now. Japan and America got it in November 2006. We got it March 2007. It looks like they've somehow got hold of the software/hardware Sony engineers would use to repair PS3's. It basically bypasses all the PS3 security and puts the PS3 into a debug mode kind of.

Sony obtains Australia ban on PS3 hack chip

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11116416

Quote:

The ban prevents OzModChips, Mod Supplier and Quantronics from importing, distributing or selling the device.
Sony has until August 31 to makes its case to the court for a permanent ban.
If it fails, the chips could go on sale on 1 September.
The firm declined to comment on the proceedings. The Australian distributors could not be reached.

There's already 3 or 4 legit clones getting ready from what I've read. Some possibly ready by the end of next week unless Sony get to them to.

I can see that if they don't get permission to sell then the software will mysteriously appear on the internet :D

The court ruled on Friday that a ban on distribution of the PSJailbreak "dongle", first issued on 27 August, would be made permanent.
However, on Thursday the software code behind the hack was released on the internet as "open-source".
Quote:

However, the court's action was pre-empted when another group of hackers decided to develop and release PSGroove, the code behind the hack, on the internet.
Mathieu Hervais told BBC News he was one of about 20 hackers involved in PSGroove's development.
"We want people to run the software they like on the system they paid for without it having to be licensed by Sony," he said.

sort that one out sony

icestar2 03-09-2010 16:24

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

It's to late for them to do anything really now. Theres so many clones already being made and now the code is out it won't be long before they are in peoples hands. All Sony are doing is trying to buy more time so they can work a way to block it with a firmware update probably.

They'll want to send a forced update before people start using it and can block the firmware updates. That's if its even possible for them because if its hardware based then they are going to have a hell of a job.

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

Sony have released a firmware update v3.42 no doubt to try and stop the hack.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/...now-available/

Now we'll have a weekly firmware update like they did on the PSP ;)

icestar2 07-09-2010 15:01

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

From whats I've read it does patch the exploit. I don't think we'll be seeing updates every week though. It all depends on if it can be cracked again now.

They may have just removed the USB search before the console boots. If thats the case then the exploit is useless and another way in will have to be found. That being said once the doors are open its usually hard to fully close them again.

The PS3 has been fully cracked by George Hotz with help from some others:

I see there are tuts on modifying updates upto 3.50 that allow homebrew and not piracy in the wild already

Anybody tried the hack? I like the idea of backing up my games to the harddrive if anything

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

You cant do anything yet with the cfw 3.55 , i had it running on my ps3 , the odd snes ,nes and megadrive emulator kind of works but thats about it

Hiroki 17-01-2011 17:00

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

Hmm i'd use it for that but I wonder if that opens you up to being banned from psn if they found out you'd been playing snes games?

You could on the 16th and you can do even more now

Almost as soon as Geohot released his jailbreak there were tools to sign your own EBOOT files forcing the system to think its a game from PSN
Yesterday 17th tools were released ( but risk of brick) that supports back up managers

The PS3 is owned 90% the last 10% is getting a safe lv2 hack working

that inevitable

I got a Fatty with a red screen of death I am sending for repair tomorrow. Fortunatly it does not have a 256 meg nand so it should be ok. I am going to fully jailbreak this one and keep my slim for PSN

I would wait for a stable release but i think talking about this on this forum is a no no so i wont say anymore !

Well its not been confirmed if modifying the console is illegal Geohot is currently in court reguarding the leak of the Key but there is no ruling

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

well i know i wouldnt touch the latest cfw as its bricking more ps3 than ones that are working with cfw so deffo a no no for me !

Zing 18-01-2011 17:46

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

well there are way more success stories than disaster stories where I have read. Most that are bricking are Fats with a 256 nand as I said

Sony has won a restraining order that stops a hacker spreading word about ways to play pirated games on the PS3.

The injunction means George Hotz can no longer put information on the web about the hack and must hand over his computers to Sony.

hope he has a back up somewhere

Re: PlayStation 3 'hacked' by hardware crackers

The keys have been leaked to loads of devs.

Incidentally Sony released 3.56 today which blocks the jailbreak and bricks some consoles if updated whilst on a modded firmware. Also there have been multiple bannings on Blacks Ops so Sony are trying to fight back

---------- Post added at 01:43 ---------- Previous post was at 01:41 ----------

also non of Geohots jailbreaks allow anything more then running and installing homebrew none have allowed back up play
