nthwgaming.co.uk website 29 July 2010

I know many of the NTHW clan also visit Cable Forum.

The nthwgaming.co.uk clan website is currently down. I am advised by our webhosting service, KillerCreation that the webserver hard disk failed late last night. At present there isn't an expected restoration time. They are working first to see what data can be recovered and transferred to replacement kit. This will also test out whether or not I have good backups  :disturbd: It is however a "free" add on to the nthw gaming server rental package, and as such restoration of the website will take second fiddle to any demands KillerCreation have for their core business of gaming servers.

The NTHW Gaming servers should be unaffected as they run on a separate dedicated server unit hosted by KillerCreation.co.uk.

One hard drive failed they are trying to recover data? wheres the back up? whats with the lack of any mirror or raid set up? even with it being free how many sites are going to be down? hard drives are cheap its gonna cost them more in man hours than it would to just swap the disk and set up a new mirror

Re: nthwgaming.co.uk website 29 July 2010

Even cheaper when you don't have to buy a spare... Most cheap/free site space is done on a basis of no backup/raid system.

don't you think thats nuts? wholesale TB hdd is gonna cost what 50 quid. How much is it gonna cost to have a tech on it for a few hours to set it all back up again

I can only advise what I have been told which is a one sentence statement. HDD failure could easily mean a RAID array card failure or whatever, and if your RAID card fails then the redundancy goes to pot.

Re: nthwgaming.co.uk website 29 July 2010

Yep, it is nuts (especially as they're buying in bulk direct from the manufacturer) and a TB will cost about half of that but every penny counts..

I was only commenting on the situation not on what you posted as the site means nothing to me anyway

It would mean something to me if someone didnt try to run it like this place ;)

anyway as I said I only commented on the situation and how much easier it would be if there were back ups which is correct ;)

I'm advised that the site is back up and running on a new IP. Just got to wait for the DNS to propogate .....

Working fine for me

I have seen a couple of daabase connection errors since the new server hardware was installed, but they usually have been single instances.

Re: nthwgaming.co.uk website 29 July 2010

The SQL system is overloaded. Too many connections error.

There is a support ticket in, but being a bank holiday it may not be dealt with swiftly. After all the webhosting is provided as a "freebie as is" add on to the main game server package.

The problem with being on a shared hosting system, especially with many other gaming clans also using a similar package is that is only takes one of those clans to experiment with their own things like statiscis packages. Configure them badly and too many queires can simply overload stuff. I suspect that may have happenned here, but don't really know yet.

The game servers run on our dedicated server and will be unaffected by the website being down.

Just want to say that the Cableforum gaming clan, nthwgaming.co.uk, is no more. We started here as a Xbox gaming clan and then moved to PC back in (iirc) 2004. We inhabited a hidden area on this website for a few years till we moved to our own server. We had numerous LAN parties up and down the country over the years. We've had members die prematurely (Dilligaf and Dogbreath). Recently, a combination of apathy (due to no decent new FPS shooters) and diversification of members gaming interests has lead to our active membership dwindling to the point that when our website was recently hacked it was deemed not worth the effort to ressurect it. As founding members, Movedgoalposts, Bopdude and I have agreed to let it go. We had a good run :)

think 1994 is at least 7 years to soon ? but always sad news to see a clan fold. I remember Clanbase and other PC gaming leagues from the early noughties. Good times

Damn, that's a shame. I was on there for a bit in the 360 days and it was a good group of people. Good effort though, 17 years is an excellent run

Sad to see things end for you guys.

Many years ago I was in a couple of 'forum led' clans, mainly playing MMO's (anyone remember Ogame? ) with forays into the FPS stuff too.

Sadly FPS online gaming got ruined for us with too many hackers/cheaters, and the onset of 'pay to win' turned us away from others.

Newer, better (ha) games also fragmented the clans, as did family life starting to get in the way of the 'younger' ones.

Great times while it lasted though, and you'll always have those memories :tu:

So were you doing LAN parties until the end or did better broadband service start to lessen the benefits of that? I remember one of you posting a pic from someone’s garage back in the early days with a shedload of PCs and network cables when you did one of your earliest meets and thinking to myself that the gaming experience must be immense for it to be worth all that effort!

Lan parties are as much about eating and getting wasted as they are about gaming hahahaha

The early LANs were a lot of effort (on the part of the techy members) but the LANs were just a great get-together :)
