Can I get a new Box?

So I have had the tv service from VM for quite a while now, and the box I have is an old PACE "ntl:" branded box. Probably about 5+ years old.

There are 2 main problems:

1) The sound keeps going intermittently. So it is not a smooth viewing experience. This happens on more than one channel so I am not sure if this is a box problem or the feed from VM.

2) Channels take about 4 seconds to change. There is the delay in changing channel aswell as the new channel to show picture once the channel has been changed [so in total taking about 4 seconds].

Both of these things have been going on for some time, but I haven't bothered to call into VM yet as I hardly watch the tv, and since I was home this week I noticed it and it is quite annoying :erm::)

Do you think a new box would fix problem 1)? I am pretty sure it will fix problem 2). I am in the HA0 area if that helps with regards to a technical issue for Problem 1).

Thanks

Hi,

Just call Support on 151 and they will send a tech out to swap the box if needed. What PACE model is it?

I don't know the model number. Is there a page with pictures of the boxes? I can tell you which one from that :D

Edit: I think it is a Pace 4000 series (users in original NTL areas)

If it's a PACE 4000 then it would have to have a fault, so make sure you tell Support all the issues you've had and you'll get a tech visit to replace. From what you are saying, it's not normal service and does require swapping out.

The tech will be there by 1230 at the latest and it is likely that he will swap the box out so keep us posted.

If your box is replaced you will get whatever the tech has on the van, but if you receive a Cisco box it will only be able to be used as a SD box unless you pay for it to be upgraded to a HD box and have the relevant package to go with it.

You'll get a samsung 2110 unless the engineer has none then you would get a VHD with the HD not activated, but if your on xl tv you could ask the engineer to upgrade you to a v+ for £49 with no installation fee

We are told up to 30 minutes after the slot time.:)

I knew you would come up with the right offer.:)

Hi Masque

I know about the HD activation charge, I just got the impression from this forum all replacement non PVR boxes were Cisco ones:confused:

As I expect jb66 will confirm if they have a Samsung box then you may get that instead, but that V+ offer is a good one for £49 and I would go for that to be honest.

Yes I am happy with my V+ box, I suppose these standard Samsung boxes are non HD compatible? I just the impression from a previous thread that Cisco was become the standard install box, it would make commercial sense to have boxes allowing for HDMI and possible HD activation

I just hope the channels change over quicker. I am not fussed if it is the Samsung or the Cisco one to be honest.

I am not paying any extra for HD. I have the BASIC Tv pack and the Asian Pack (£10), thats it, and so don't need HD although BBC HD/ITV HD etc would be nice.

Will try and keep you guys posted with which box it is :D (need to remember to post back!)

Remember if your is potential new replacement STB is HD capable it is a one off activation charge, then you will not have to pay anything else to watch those above HD channels on your TV subscription.

Oh really? I thought you had to have XL tv to get the HD channels (even bbc!)

How much is the activation? £49?
Is there a monthly charge after?
Which HD channels are free if you activate but only have the TV: Size M?

Ooooh, its 8am and I am ready for the person to arrive :D.

OK, all done =) ... got the V HD box (Cisco one). Looks sleek, no arial thingy, and only 1 SCART socket.

Engineer said I should call up and ask how much it would cost for HD channels.... so if anyone could answer the post above it would be much appreciated.

Thanks :D

So no monthly fee?
Also, why do they charge for "Activation?" Just doesn't seem logical? (Apart from them making money? - As the channels are FTA?)

No monthly fee.

Virgin Media is a business and they are providing hardware and supporting it. The cost needs to be re-couped from somewhere. The V-HD box is the standard box, but if you want HD, then a activation fee applies.

No channels are not FTA on cable. Only Satellite and Terrestial has FTA channels

Thanks. I will consider the £49 cost! Should have got this BEFORE the world cup lol.

Re: Can I get a new Box?

OK, helpppppppppp!

Basically, I didn't realise at the time, but we had an arial running upstairs, so that we could watch whatever VM box was showing downstairs, upstairs too.

But this box doesn't have the RF stuff, so we can't get that channel upstairs now.:dunce:

Found out about the UNIVERSAL MODULATOR which could solve this issue (SCART in RF OUT), however my mum has got the perfect excuse and she wants another box upstairs too (so that she can change the channel). So before we take that plunge, a few questions:

1. I understand the extra box will cost £10 per month.
2. If I activate the HD on the CURRENT box, (@ £49), the new box will be at £5.50 a month

3. NOW, we have the Asian Pack (@£10), if we were to get the additional STB, would we get the Asian Pack on it too, i.e. Pay £5.50 a month for the box AND get the Asian Pack on it OR do we have to buy the Asian Pack on that seperately?

4. Also, I think it is something like if you have TV XL, then HD has no activation charge? Is this true?
5. Is it possible to get TV XL and then downgrade back to TV M but keep the HD channels as it would have been activated?

Sorry many questions, but unsure! (If you can reply using the question numbers I won't be confused :D)

Thanks

Thanks, but for 3. which one is it? Do we pay an EXTRA £10 for the channels or not?

P.S. one more question

A. Is there an installation charge for the ADDITIONAL box?
(I have broadband upstairs, so its a case of putting in a splitter, and taking a wire to my parents room.)

and a somewhat silly question (which my mum is forcing me to ask:p:)
B. If I activate the HD on the current box tomorrow, and not get the additional box yet, I still get the price of £5.50 for the additional box right (whenever we get it)?

I know it quite clearly says this on the website, but my mum thinks that if you Activate HD, and seperately get the additional box later on, they will charge you £10, not £5.50! (I know that doesn't make sense, but whatever makes her happy :D)

Ben B 23-09-2010 20:43

Re: Can I get a new Box?

You don't pay an extra £10 because it just mirrors the subscription on the other box. So you will pay £5.50 a month extra for multiroom and that is it. And yes you will still only pay £5.50 instead of £10 if you get the HD activated before you get multiroom :)

jb66 23-09-2010 20:44

Re: Can I get a new Box?

You will still pay the 5.50 if you activate it now or later, and you will get the Asian pack upstairs for the 5.50 only. You also will be charged a £40 installation fee for the new box

Thanks... But £40!!! Wow, is there no budging on that? Could I not ask nicely for it to be waived?:D

There is no way to do self install on this right? My dad could do the wiring, but I guess VM would have problems with the signal level:(

You could ask for a new box with hd and keep your old one sd, dunno if they would do a deal there, if I was the fault engineer I'd have Upsold you to save the installation fee

The engineer I had, whilst very nice, he was not even sure himself what channels I was meant to get.

First he said I will already have the HD Channels, and then when I didnt have any, he said "Oh, you must have to pay extra for them then" lol.

I will call tomorrow and ask verrrry nicely:D. Let's hope for the best :D

OK, the £40 charge applies and they won't budge on that :(

I mentioned about this "Upsell", and the lady goes I was misinformed as the FAULT Tech cannot upsell, and even if he did, they would charge £40 for the additional box. Only if it is an INSTALL tech, could they add on another service...

Now will have to see whether the £40 charge stops us or not. But in any circumstances I can't order it they said as mum is the account holder, and as HD is a new 12 month contract, she has to order it!

jb66 24-09-2010 10:36

Re: Can I get a new Box?

It doesnt matter as the service tech isnt there anymore so he cant upsell you, but I done exactly this last week and as I was doing it there and then the install fee was waived.

To be honest, CF is always correct (over the call centre), but I can't tell the lady "No you are wrong" lol...

Either way, I (mum) must pay the £40 if we want it :(

Called up again now, and it went to India. The guy did NOT speak to my mum OR mention a 12 month contract:confused:

Anyway, £49 for the HD paid - Got the channels... used the HD feature on my tv for the FIRST time, and VERY HAPPY:D

Engineer coming on Tuesday to install the additional box. (£40 charge :p:)

All in all, apart from the guy who took the order telling me that the technician installing the additional Box will activate the HD on the current box it was all good.

(I was passed onto Tech Support to get the HD activated who said it was already activated, so I guess that guy didn't know what was happening:p:)
