Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
DVD recorder is 5 years old. Don't know whether this makes a difference but just can't get programmes to copy on to it from V+ HD box. No-one at Virgin can help and one lady said that I must have an HD ready DVD recorder to do it. Surely this is nonsense as the programmes I've recorded onto the V+ box aren't even from HD channels.
I want to be able to record football matches on Sky Sports for my father who's in his 80's. Before V+ was installed, I had the old Virgin box which allowed me to record directly from the TV straight to my DVD hard drive and I could then transfer them onto disc for him. Can anyone help please? |

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Put scart in VCR socket of stb and av1 on DVD. Tell your DVD rec to record av1 and that should be it

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
:confused:Hi There,
I'm at loss!!!. I have tried many times topy programs off my New V+ box to my DVD Recorder with no joy. I have been on the phone with Virgin trying to record but with no sucess. I would appreciate if anyone can help??. I would just like to copy over onto the DVD Hard drive programmes recorded on the V+ box and then edit them and burn to disc as I used to do with the old Virgin box. The new box doesn't have a co-axil aerial output? does this matter or does the scart carry teh signal? The V+ box is leading a charmed life as it's critical most days of the week with recordings for the kids. I look forward to any help. Cheers:::confused: |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
You need to use a SCART lead connected from the "VCR" SCART socket on the V+ to the DVDR. Make sure you are selecting the correct input to record from on your DVDR - the manual should tell you how. (Tip: to test it is working, you don't need to use the Copy to VCR/DVD function on the V+. Without using it should should be able to record live TV to a DVD instead).
When you are set up ready to do the copy, get the DVDR ready to record. Then on the V+, go to the V+ menu, select V+ Extras, then Copy to VCD/DVD. Highlight and press OK to select the programmes you want to copy. Use the blue key to move between pages. When you've selected them all, press yellow, start recording, and lastly press OK. ps. Welcome to the forum! |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Thank You Spiderplant.
I'l try that cabling later on my return home. Where it goes wrong with me is trying to tune in my DVD to receive the menu of the V+ box. Just to see what it is I'm going to be recording via the DVD seems to be the problem?? I take it it is possible record onto the DVD Hard Drive and edit later??, or does it have to go straight to disc?? Non of terh programmes recorded were copy protected, tehy were straight off BBC or STV!!. Thanks again. James.:) |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
In my experience of using the SA version of the box is that you would/could have the TV scart socket into the TV and the VCR scart into the DVD recorder. I don't have an LCD tv so I don't know if that affects the output but if I remember correctly, as soon as you switch to HDMI the scart is disabled? Maybe it only disables the TV scart and not the VCR scart?
So your problem is maybe two-fold in that you have the HDMI enabled and also connected the wrong scart. Also must point out that you will not see the menus or anything via the VCR output, just the output picture. For example, many occasions I record from red button and then I think the remote is duff when I press back or menu then realise that I'm on the VCR scart and not TV scart! lol The way I do it is to select 4 one hour episodes e.g. The Wire. Queue them up to play one after another via the TV scart using the "copy" facility in the Virgin menu and press record on the appropriate AV channel on the DVD recorder. Once you start the copy process, the queued progs will play via the VCR scart but enable you to use the TV scart to watch normal tv. I then get all 4 episodes recorded one after another and then get rid of the trailers etc and chapterise and burn to DVD disk. Again, hopefully someone can say whether the VCR scart is still usable in HDMI mode as I don't know. Hope you found this helpful.:) |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
I don't have a DVD record function on my DVD player but I do on my desk top PC , is it possible to use that instead or are there not the correct sockets/ cables to do this. If I do have to have a DVD recordable player , which is the cheapest and best make to buy as I have to un-install it in 2-3 days.
Thanks |

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
I know you can't record HD programs from Virgin HD box and output to DVD Recorder, but does using the RGB Scart copy over a better picture in terms of sound and vision if you copy an HD version of the same program instead of it's SD equivalent? Has anbody experimented with this?

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Hi there Spiderplant,
Sorry I haven’t replied sooner re the recording of programmes from my Samsung V+ box to my DVDR. I tried several times but was unsuccessful in getting anything recorded. I did manage to see the V+Menu and all the stages you go through to record onto the DVD hard Drive, but to no avail. Am I right in saying that some recorders don’t support this function?? Philips in particular? I have a Philips DVDR3440H. It’s a great machine (albeit old) and does everything you ask it to do, except receive a programme via the connection. Am I just not connecting the Scarts properly?? or do I need a specific type of recorder??::confused: I look forward to your (or any other reply) JKMurray |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Hi all,
I'm Viv and I'm new to all this. The reason I joined this forum was to see if anyone had any idea how I could copy my recorded progs from my v+ hd box onto a dvd recorder. I'm an older girl and technology is difficult for me to grasp at times but i'm trying hard. I've read a few of the messages on the forum about this subject and it seems i'm not the only one having problems, but I don't really understand some of the replies. What I need is some kind, patient person to tell me what I need to do, in basic terms. I have tried attaching a scart lead from my v+ box to my seperate dvd recorder and although having followed the instructions in the Virgin booklet and seemingly things were happening, when I came to play the dvd nothing had been recorded. Can anyone help please. |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
JK: I've looked up the manual for your DVDR and it definitely looks like it should be able to do the job. You should have the V+ connected to the EXT2 socket on the DVDR, and select EXT2 as the recording source. Is that what you are doing?
Viv: I suspect you have much the same problem. What make & model recorder do you have? ps. Welcome to the forum! |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Hello Spiderplant,
Thanks for your reply to my question about copying recorded progs from my v+ box. The make of my dvd recorder is Toshiba dvr19dtkb2. I bought this particular machine to enable me to copy all my old videos onto dvd. It's great for this as all I have to do is put a video in one side and a blank dvd in the other side, press a button and the machine does the rest. Then I thought about the "Copy to dvd" function on my v+ box and was very excited about that as I have a load of old recordings that I don't want to delete, but of course the free space is always reaching critical. I wondered if my recorder being a video to dvd copier may not do the job. Anymore suggestions would be very much appreciated. Cheers Viv :) |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
I can't find the manual for your recorder, Viv, but from the specs it looks like it should be able to do it. As with JK, you probably need a SCART lead from the VCR socket on the V+ to the second SCART socket on the recorder (maybe called AV2 or EXT2). Then somehow in the recorder menus you need to tell it to record from this socket to DVD. Unfortunately without the manual I can't tell you exactly what you need to do.
Can you check how you've got it connected and report back? |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
I'll do that Spiderplant, may be a few days but I'll give it another go and let you know exactly how I've connected the two and if I've made any progress.
Thanks so far for your help. |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Thanks Spiderplant for you promt reply,
I'll try the cabling as you say. I'm just wondering how i can select the recordeing source as EXT2?? I don't have a co-axil aerial input and when i try to tune in to pick up a recording source it can't select any channels. I take it it its teh scart that carries teh signal?? I'll try your cableing probably tomorrow evening and getback to you. Fingers crossed, good luck to you too Viv, hope your successful? Cheers JKMurray |

As soon as you've started recording, you can tell the V+ to begin the Copy to DVD. In case you've lost the manual for your DVD recorder, you can download a copy from http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/d...05_dfu_eng.pdf |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Spiderplant,
SUCCESS!!!!:) I went through the cabeling and tuning via the source menu and managed to get programmes off my V+ onto the DVDhd. Quality wasn't great but this was due to being on LP, changed to HQ and it's great. Thanks you for you info and patience. Now all I need to do is find the time to transfer 78hrs of programmes onto DVD:D. Thanks again. JKMurray:hyper: |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
You also need to check your DVDR manual carefully; I was also having problems but eventually realised that the "input" on the DVDR I was using was in fact only an output!
I now use a scart at the V+ end and phono input to the front panel of the DVDR |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Hi Everyone.
I also have a :confused problem with copying to video tape from my Virgin V+ box. While I am able to copy with no problem...there in no sound when playback. Anybody else come across this problem????? So frustrating..took me ages to get it to playback..and now can`t hear it! |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
For a couple of years, I've had a Sony RDR HXD995 DVD Recorder (with multi region playback) hooked up to a Samsung SMT-2110C Virgin Media Set Top Box.
This worked perfectly with no problems at all. I could set the stb to change channels and the DVD recorder to record the programmes. I could watch discs and record channels simultaneously. When I stopped watching a disc, the TV picture would come on automatically. If I was watching TV and wanted to switch to a recording saved to the Sony's hard drive, it was a one click operation. That was then. Unfortunately I allowed Virgin to talk me into upgrading my stb to a Virgin V BoxHD. As with many other posters in this thread, I've tried every Scart/HDMI permutation under the sun and cannot record from the V BoxHD – in fact I can't even see the Sony menu on the TV screen unless I reconfigure the Virgin box connection from HDMI to Scart. What I have at the moment is just the possibility of watching (but not recording) programmes saved on the Sony hard drive or watching DVDs – but to do either means reconfiguring the V BoxHD each time from HDMI to Scart. And then reconfiguring it BACK to watch the TV. Virgin customer support is utterly useless – all they have done is offered me a TiVo (which is no good either as that assumes that everyone wants to watch everything they record AT HOME, whereas I record to DVD-R to watch on frequent flights and train journeys). In fact, Virgin they say they can't even swap the new V Box HD back to the old Samsung box for me, so I guess I'm absolutely shafted unless any tech wizard out there has a solution to the connection issue which will enable me to use the Sony + V BoxHD in the same way that I used the Sony + Samsung. The other thing I thought of was buying a Samsung SMT-2110C on eBay, but then I'd need a new Virgin smart card and activation, wouldn't I..? I'm sure I can't just stick the current V Box HD smartcard inside an old Samsung stb? HELP! |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
You hdmi from vhd to tv, scart from vhd box to av2 on recorder, scart from av1 of recorder to tv.
To watch the vhd the tv should be Set to hdmi. To set a recording or watch dvds put tv to scart, your recorder should be on av2 ready to record. Service technicans still carry samaung 2110s, it can be done to go back |

I know the service technicians still carry the 2110s, but Virgin Customer Support say they will NOT reinstall them as they are being phased out. |
Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
A quick email to ceo will sort that

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
It should act as before, except you now have to manually switch between scart and hdmi on the tv. If your recorder is recording freeview then hdmi will work for cable. If your recording cable then you can watch what your recording or watch freeview
