The GIMP is free

There is a trial version of Capture if you need to do RAW editing.

Try paint.net. If that isn't powerful enough, try Gimp. If Gimp's too tricky to use, pay for Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements.

If Gimp isn't powerful enough, you need Photoshop.

If you just want a good photo editing software then Corel's Paintshop Pro is excellent value for money. It has an excellent wizard for fixing red eye..

If you want the full fancy smanshy stuffed full of all sorts of artistic goodness and you have extremely deep pockets($900-$1700) then Adobe's Photoshop Pro is for you..the cheaper less full on version is Photoshop Elements which is good value for money as well.(£100)

If you go for free then the Gimp is similar to Photoshop and there are so many free applications offered free with new digital cameras or on the various free to try or downloads link pages that Google or Yahoo is your friend..It really all depends what you are after.

Photoshop Elements 8 (Latest version) can be had for approx £40-£50 :)

Personally I find GIMP fiddly to use. But Picasa is good for simple fixes (and its free)

Maggy i agree Paintshop is good, the only thing that lets it down on the latest version is it takes bloody ages to install.

Well I only have the last before the last version and it took no time to install.

Photo Pro X3 does the first process of extracting all the files, this took almost 10 mins alone on my system and my CPU went to 100% i thought phaps my system was over heating so i took it to my mates house and did a test install and uninstall on his and he has a Pentium i5 650 which is 3.2Ghz with 4GB ram and it was much the same.

im using Adobe Photoshop CS5 iv been using Photoshop since CS2 & while its expensive its really good, i cant recommend it enough.
