3d tv

All I ask is one question, what would you do based on the knowledge you have?

I currently have a 50 inch Plasma TV, a Panasonic Viera TX-P50C10B, I Also have a Blu-Ray Player which is Panasonic and a Surround Sound System (5.1), I Also have a Wii and Sony PS3 Rigged up to this.

My Dilemma is this.........

I Want to upgrade to make the most of the new improvements being made, mainly 3D. I Know it's in early stages but is it worth it at this stage? or wait 3 years?

I'm planning on getting the Samsung http://www.greatuniversal.com/63in-3...666-sku4194090

Including 4 sets of glasses and the 3d blu-ray player.

I'm considering this based on reviews, and the fact 3d technology will be here to stay, especially gaming and the sony motion technology, but the movies also.

An upgrade to 63" 3d Tv SOUNDS AWESOME TO ME, but do you think i am being pre emtive? or do you think its actually worth it to wait 2 years based on the current developments?

DocDutch 15-06-2010 23:40

Re: 3d tv

to be honest I would really wait for another year at the minimum mate 1st of all a 40" Samsung 3d TV is going to cost you around £1700 then the player for another 400 quid at least.

Stuart 15-06-2010 23:52

Re: 3d tv

I'd wait as well.. In a year's time, you'll be able to get TVs with good 3d performance for less than £600..

Also, if display resolution is important (as it might be with a 63inch screen), I've been told that the PS3 is limited to 720P resolution when running a game in 3D.

DocDutch 16-06-2010 00:00

Re: 3d tv

another note on that kind of screensize how big is your living room as otherwise sitting say from 10 meters away the display will be quite distorted and looking pixalated.

Barewolf 16-06-2010 00:16

Re: 3d tv

at the moment the tv is 50 inch hd, and hd channels are crisp, but as for 600 in 1 year for 3d seems a little more pre emtive than even i would expect, no?

Re: 3d tv

Why bother? Seriously, why bother?

It's horrendously expensive at the moment, with sod all content to watch on it.

How many truly 3D movies are there other than Avatar?

How many 3D Blu-rays have been released so far? (proper ones, not ones which use those crappy red/green glasses)

Are there any 3D games yet? (proper ones)

Why pay THOUSANDS for something that will have hardly any use for some time yet.

Barewolf 16-06-2010 01:06

Re: 3d tv

Gran Tourismo 5 + PS Move, Tiger Woods 11 move, Yes Avatar will be available, but theres a lot being released sooner and with SKY 3D in August.

Im concidering because i dont think its a bad deal for an extra 2 grand, but i also see your points and thats making my decision easier

Tezcatlipoca 16-06-2010 01:15

Re: 3d tv

Not exactly many games though is it. Not yet.

Movies... There have hardly been any truly 3D movies other than Avatar (& some animations), so far, with many using post-production 3D (e.g. Clash of the Titans) & consequently not looking very good. 3D Blu-rays... Avatar isn't out until next year. From a quick search, it seems all that's currently available is Monsters vs Aliens... hardly something that justifies spending several thousand pounds on a TV & all the other bits required.

Sky 3D... How much 3D content will that be showing... other than certain football matches where Sky has had special cameras? Again, there still aren't that many 3D movies, & of those, there aren't that many that are *really* 3D. Also, I don't believe that 3D on Sky 3D can be HD at the same time... there'd be enough bandwidth for HD or 3D but not both at the same time.

I think it's an awful deal for an extra 2 grand. In my opinion, there simply is not enough content to come anywhere close to justifying the extremely expensive outlay.

Give it time... Let the TVs & glasses come down in price, let the content increase in quantity & quality.

Barewolf 16-06-2010 01:29

Re: 3d tv

Ive read all PS3 games are 3D with Tv's that are 3D and only the few released show the full 3D capability, much like (I Assume) that when 720p was shown on youtube was classed as HD? I dunno, hence im asking here, but if what ive read is true, then even 720p 3D would be worth it for gaming alone when you see that the sony move technology will be released soon.

Avatar i think will be out as will many more before xmas, in 3D, and Sky HD is just a bonus

love to hear more about this, but if i bought the system it would be 6 grand and 1 grand on my old one, so 5 grand.

Tezcatlipoca 16-06-2010 01:48

Re: 3d tv

Perhaps 2D games can be given some sort of pseudo-3D effect, but I do not see how it could just magically make 2D games into 3D...The only truly 3D games would be ones which were made with that in mind.

All I've read about Avatar suggests 2011 for 3D Blu-ray.

As for "many more"...Like what though? I think the majority of 3D movies released so far have been crap, due to crap post-production 3D (e.g. Clash), or due to just being crap (e.g. Clash). Other than Avatar, there haven't really been any stunners, just a few "good" or "not bad" ones such as the odd horror movie or animated movie. Hardly a great deal of movies, certainly not enough to justify (IMO) spending SEVERAL THOUSAND POUNDS on a ridiculously expensive television. I wouldn't spend it just to watch Avatar, no matter how stunning it is, & I certainly wouldn't spend it to watch stuff which is inferior to Avatar.

I don't think it's the way forward, not yet. So far, all it seems to me is a way for Hollywood to rake in extra $$$ by 3Ding things, which don't need it, on the cheap & charging extra for tickets.

Stephen 16-06-2010 06:21

Re: 3d tv

The PS3 won't have any real 3D games till near the end of the year. Its simply not worth getting a 3D tv yet.

I would at least wait till the start of next year before considering it.

damien c 16-06-2010 07:14

Re: 3d tv

It's not worth it yet not enough content yet and as for game's some will utilise the 3d but not very well, I'm leaving it for another year or 2 before i look at it for myself.

Can you really afford this ? I ask cuz you link to great universal? you are not seriously buying from there are you? unless you have a massive voucher code ?

3D TV - I'm still having a dilema in regards to what 2D TV to buy and I been trying to make my mind up for years now! Anyone got any tips/recommendations? The 32 inch CRT in the lounge looks really ugly, and I think I'm the only person I know who hasn't got a plasma/lcd yet. I was going to go into Costco on saturday and pick up the 42inch panasonic plasma THXPv20 or g20 (I think) - £720 offer inc VAT. I can probably go upto 50inch.

There are some plasma's that use about the same for example my 42" 1080p plasma uses 250w and my dads 40" 1080p lcd uses 240w, but i prefer plasma as they give a better picture than lcd or led or even led backlit tv's, i thought it was funny when i had people saying to me over xmas when i was working in comet, saying they want a tv and they want the best picture for x amount of money at 40"+ and, i would tell them go for a plasma they would then say no chance the picture isn't as good.

We had 2 tv's setup showing the same blu-ray disc one tv was a 50" plasma the other was a 50" led backlit, and as soon as they saw it they always chose the plasma as they, have better colour's sharper picture and no smearing of fast paced movement's that lcd and led backlit tv's have.

Still 3d tv's are not worth the money yet as there is nothing out there to utilise it fully yet for everday use, unless your going to watch the same thing all the time every day.

RUMOURS around the internet are that model (PSc7000) is being discontinued as the company that makes the REAL Black Filter cannot meet demand and so Samsung has terminated the contract and it's being replaced by a PSc6900 model for copyright reasons. Everything is the same just the filter.

Alot of regular folk will say it's just a filter, the way the sun shines on it and so on, but the filter does make a big difference.

And a 3D TV will give you a better 2D picture.

Re: 3d tv

Plasmas use more electricity. Its the foundation of making plasmas do what they do.

The comment about using similar electricity to LCDs is false as the screen gets brighter it will use more electricity to 'excite' the cells.

Who cares, if you can afford a plasma what's an extra few pennys a day

Rockabilly Spike 16-06-2010 17:38

Re: 3d tv

the electricity use of an LCD is constant whereas an LED backlit one and indeed a plasma is variable.

If you havent seen it with glasses then seriously........you should, but i'm looking for more like this, quality wise.

PS - Ive ordered my TV, 63" with 3D blu Ray, and 4 pairs of shutter glasses, do I regret it? Nope.

At the end of the day its TRUE that not a huge amount of content is available in 3D yet, but for gaming theres enough to keep me busy until next year when there is more movies, games, and HD Sky TV broadcasts.

Ty for all your opinions.

I do not understand how hardly any content at all whatsoever equates to "enough to keep me busy until next year"

No Sky 3D until late 2010. Hardly any 3D games available until later in 2010 (& even then, there aren't many). Hardly any 3D Blu-rays available at all (unless you just plan on watching "Monsters vs. Aliens" every single week until "Avatar" finally comes out next year?).

Seriously, what exactly is the point of spending THOUSANDS OF POUNDS on something that has virtually no content available at the moment?

Unless you have a high disposable income & can afford to just throw money away (& AFAIK, you do not), then it seems to me that this is a rather foolish waste of money (especially given the need to save for a wedding, if an earlier poster was correct?). Still, your money I guess...

I don't get why you even bothered to create this thread... you obviously weren't really after any actual advice, as it seems your mind was made up all along. And if it was actually a thinly veiled attempt at bragging, well, I don't think that has worked tbh...

My own personal advice would be (indeed, it was) to wait. In a year or two, when there is more content, the equipment will be cheaper and/or better.

My main aim for getting this was to use the TV as an upgrade to the 50 inch plasma i already have, i think the future is with 3D and mostly 3D gaming.

Yes, i'm sceptical of buying it because of the price but i also feel its going to last a fair few years with it being already 3D ready, and already HD Ready.

I'm not bragging Matt, I was looking for opinions, and I got them, my mind was 70-30 for getting the TV mainly because of the launch of Playstation move, Gran Tourismo 5, and 3D, all at the same time.

The movies are a bonus, and it seems theres more and more becoming available each month, i dont expect to sit and watch 3D movies 24 hours a day for weeks on end, but i feel 3dtv is a bonus in itself, so when a 3d movie is released on blu ray, we can enjoy it at home, in the meantime we can enjoy what the PS3 has to offer in terms of 3D gaming and also, motion gaming. Combine that with 5.1 surround sound and you're immersed in what technology has to offer.

I feel personally that this TV will last 5 years without thinking of upgrading, in which time i've already enjoyed what the 3D has to offer, even if i choose to upgrade again before that, i havent lost anything, ive still got a HD tv.

I'm certainly not kicking myself over the decision, i thought most of you would be going out and buying one already before me.

I would still have waited till at least the second generation of 3D TVs are available next year, when the content will start to appear.

You keep going on about the PS3 Move and 3D games however Move isn't out till September/October and the First proper 3D game will be GT5 due in November, and yes there are currently 2-3 PSN games out in 3D as of last week but there is really no point in going for a 3D TV at this actual time.

article about the lack of 3D Blu ray releases.

Why "upgrade" your current 50" plasma when it's not even 12 months old & is more than adequate for current content?

"Future"? Yes, keyword "future". If 3DTV is the "future" (& it certainly is not the present!), then why spend five grand now, when you can wait for more content & cheaper TVs in the future?

"Playstation move, Gran Tourismo 5, and 3D, all at the same time."

Move: September 2010

GT5: November 2010

Sky 3D: Late 2010

3D Blu-rays: Hardly any currently available

So why spend all that money to buy a 3DTV now?

"more and more [movies] becoming available each month"

Such as?

Hmm...

Monsters vs. Aliens: March 2010...but only when purchasing a Samsung 3DTV or 3D BD player.

Ice Age 3: Currently only available when purchasing a Panasonic 3DTV (not available separately until March 2011).

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: June 2010.

Toy Story 3: Not until November 2010.

Disney's A Christmas Carol: Not until November 2010.

Avatar: Not until 2011.

Yes, there are other movies coming to the cinema in 3D later this year, but that's cinema, so it will be even longer before they hit 3D BD.

So there's hardly any content *currently* available... And even later in the year, there still won't be very much (or of that, even less will actually be any good).

"I feel personally that this TV will last 5 years without thinking of upgrading"

Did you also feel that when your purchased your 50" plasma?

How about when you bought whichever TV you had before that?

Think back to how many generations of HD Ready TV we have now seen, with improvements every single year, not just including 1080p being more & more common in place of 720p/1080i.

Next year's 3D TVs will be better than the one you have just bought, & will be cheaper.

Sorry, but I think you have wasted your money. Big time.

Well more fool you Barewolf especially considering that there is still not enough content to warrant the 3DTV purchasing at the moment, hence why i didn't get one when i got my new TV.

Also there is still the matter of which type of 3D screen is going to win in the end, as there are 2 or 3 different type's at the moment.

3DTV may be the future as said before but that doesn't mean we should all rush out and buy something, that is extremely overpriced and under utilised at the moment.

Before i even think of getting a 3DTV i have allot of thing's that i can use my money for as in paying debts off, saving for important things coming up and then i will look at a 3DTV but that won't be till next year when the decision has been made as to which screen type, is going to become the mainstream screen and when there will be sufficient content and the TVs will be a hell of a lot cheaper for the, price that you have paid for your 63" next year you will probably be able to get to of them at that size for that price.

There was no point asking for advice if you were not going to listen to it, and it would not surprise me if you had actually ordered it before you posted and that this really was just to try and brag about it, i guess the moral is don't give Barewolf advice when he asks as he won't listen and will do the opposite to what you tell him.

I feel sorry for you Barewolf obviously you must have the very latest stuff no matter the cost even if you are getting ripped off, i was the same but i have now seen it is foolish and would much rather wait and know i am getting what i should get instead of wasting money.

Well i know i won't be giving you anymore advice in the future if you ask for it because you just don't listen and enjoy the nice big bill when it comes through for something that would of cost a quarter of the price in about 6-8 months time anyway.

I dont care if you blackrep me etc for it you just shouldnt be asking for advice and then not listen to it, when people tell you not to waste your money i asked for advice on graphics cards and was told to wait or get a ati if i must have one now but i am going to wait and see what happens over the next few months, but all i am going to do in the mean time is buy a cheap card for my dad and then take my 2nd gtx280 of him and go back to sli.

For someone who only months ago were trying to get £1000 together for a wedding by any means possible, which is now only a couple of months away, shouldn't you be saving rather than spending?

What does your future wife have to say about your purchases? What do you do for a living now if you don't mind me asking? If you're financially secure then yeah go for it, why not you've earned it etc. But it seems like the timing is inconsistent for me. I'm just a bit confused and concerned at the same time.

Ty for all your opinions.

did you buy it out of the catalogue? if so did you use Topcashback?

No that's why I asked. I know he was deemed bankrupt a few years ago, and that was when he was living at his parents, so how it came to that I don't know. I see that he just paid out over 2k on the never never for his new computer gear no less than 6 months ago and from what I can see going over his posts on here it seems like that's the normal way of purchasing for him.

Seems like he doesn't mind going into debt even though his upcoming wedding is just upon him.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but it seems he hasn't posted anything that he's found employment since he's disabled, I'm hoping (seriously) that he does know what he's doing and it is all above board. I just cannot by going over his posts come to a justifiable conclusion to why let alone how.

I'd be in deep trouble, budget or not. A 63" screen is obscenely huge in all but the very largest of living rooms.

Barewolf 17-06-2010 11:01

Re: 3d tv

Ok first of all lets get one thing clear, I'm not bragging, I asked a genuine question and infact I asked a similar question a few months back about 3D TV and if the colours were true and would you need glasses for them, but I got little response.

My choice to buy this TV came from a few factors.
first of all, it is a HDTV as well as a 3DTV, so I am not going to be losing anything by getting this updated version.

I am buying it out of the catalogue, so its buy now pay March, and it will be £35 a week, which I can afford. I also don't plan on getting another TV to replace it, why would I when its a 3D TV, and a HD TV.

It's also under warranty for 5 years, by which time it will be fully paid for, if after 3 years when its paid for, I decide to sell it, then it will still be under warranty when I do.

It's also going to make a big difference to how I play the PS3, as I'm getting the move, GTA5 and the other 3D Games as they come out.

We also don't watch movies on a regular basis, about once a week, but the movies due to be released we will be watching in 3D, but as I said before in earlier posts, I feel 3D is a bonus to HD, eventually when Sky 3D is released it will be more in use, but until then we have the releases of movies to keep us occupied.

It's not as if we won't be able to watch TV unless it's a 3D film or program. You also have the world cup in 3D.

Ive looked online and in other catalogues for 63" Plasma TV's and found the Majority of them are over 2 grand, there wasn't a huge gap in price from a normal HDTV to a 3DTV, with that screen size.

With all those factors in place it made me make up my mind, my question originally was what do you think if you were in a position to get one, would you? Your answers I took on board and you all said no, and why.

I didn't ask to be slated, whatever my question originally was doesn't justify bringing my future marriage into the equation, or the fact I "Used" to live in Wilmslow and that because it's a posh area then it's pocket change to me when it isn't.

I'm fully aware of the price, and if I had 6 grand in my hand I probably wouldn't buy it, I would get the garden finished, however that's not the case, and it's not going to affect my situation in March anymore than I am now, to me its enough to warrant getting it earlier so I can enjoy the games over Christmas, and whatever 3D Movies are released.

At the end of the day you only live once, in 6 Months time I could get hit by a bus, why put it off its within my reach to get it now. At the very least I can watch Final Destination, Friday the 13th, Monsters Vs Aliens, and there's a fair few more on blu-ray at the moment, but yes I agree there's not a huge library of content available yet, but they are releasing them all the time.

Another reason for buying it now is that when the price of 3DTV drops, you will find that HDTV will also drop, people will buy the 3DTV rather than HDTV especially if there's only a few hundred between the two, so selling my 50" Plasma I have now will probably only see me getting £150 for, If I sell it now I can get nearly it all back that I paid for it. That money can go towards paying a chunk of the new 3DTV.

So please in future don't start with the flame threads again, I asked a question, I weighed up your opinions, and I decided to get it based on what I just said, if you wish to believe its boasting then that's up to you, if I asked a question on buying a car would you say I was boasting? get real.

One of the reason I rarely post nowadays is because of flaming in the past, my piece is said, Ciao

Monsters V Aliens is the only 3D Blu ray you can get at present. Final Destination and Friday the 13th are not in 3D. well The final destination is but the old type you watch with coloured specs. PS3 isn't due many 3D games till the start of next year. You should just stick with your 50" and forget about 3D for the time being.

Its a total waste of money going for 3D this year as we have all advised you. Any content won't be appearing till the end of the year and also 63" is WAY too big for a normal house. Have you taken measurements to make sure you can fit it where you want it and how far back you will be sitting from it?

At the end of the day its your decision but not a very clever one.

I never said you mentioned a length of reply. The response was little because it was answered immediately. Why do you need a discussion about it?

As you made the point it seems you only mentioned it as being a 'little response' because you are in some way aggrieved with the fact you didn't get an extended thread.

In all fairness you posted the thread yesterday just after midnight. You got quite a few responses by 8am, most advising you not to go for the 3D tv yet. You have bought it irrespective of any of the advice you received within a day of making your original post. So have you given anytime for people to respond properly? I think not, and it's unfair to crticise people for not responding - your threads not been going for more than 2 days.

Did you read the original question Tom? The thread didnt answer my question enough in my opinion to say that it was an informative thread, it discussed shutter and polarized glasses but nothing from forum members discussed 3D TV and how they project images, IE; In full colour and with or without glasses.

I was looking for members to post about their experiences, if they had seen a 3DTV in action, and if they used glasses or not, or perhaps if anyone knew of any developments to make TV's that done need glasses at all.

Well we only ordered it last night, if thats the case then i'm sure if we ring Littlewoods up we can get the cashback. However when we bought it there was no mention of this, and buy now pay march only allows you to pay over 156 weeks, which i dont mind as thats the only way i can afford it anyway.

Thanks though Zing, I will mention it to my Fiance and see if we can sort it out before its too late.

LOL No Zing its £2999 for the TV, and you get the Blu-Ray and 2 Pairs of Glasses free when you buy 4 Pairs of Glasses and the Blu-ray, It didnt work out like that though, we ended up saving about £550 but the total cost of everything we have ordered including APR is £6300 give or take, if it was 11k i would no way buy it, the only reason its 6300 is because its over 3 years at high intrest.

Save up for 3 years, get a better telly then and it'll be half the price. Simples. It's not like you're suffering at the mo with a 50inch TV already is it. You have a blu ray player as well, so for something that's not going to be hardly used you're paying stupid amounts for basically nothing.

Is that 50" tv a 1080p or not because if it is only 1080i then you will not get more than £400 from anyone in there right mind as you can buy a 50" 1080i Panasonic, TV for £600 you can also get the 50" 1080p Panasonic TV for £800 so where you think you are going to get around £1000 for the tv from, i don't know but i wouldn't give you more than £400 for it regardless of 1080p or not, because it is used and the warranty is almost up and the fact that i can buy a brand new for not much more.

Its not worth 1000 anyway, i was just using that as an example to round off the numbers rather than saying 650 and 2999+399+169+169 and so on.

The TV I have is Panasonic TXP50C10B with a Blu Ray Player thats Also Panasonic.

Im asking 650 for the tv and blu-ray, I also dont think the health risks are important, its not like we will be watching 3D constantly, and everyone at our house can see 3D via the red/blue glasses, i think the health risks will be for people with epilepsy, at the end of the day its not going to be much different to going to the cinema which people do all the time.

You are insane if you think it will get more than that on ebay let alone if you think both are worth that for discontinued item's, at comet we would sell discontinued items at 10% cheaper then they would gradually go to 30% cheaper and they come with 12 month warranty.

Out of curiosity how old is the tv because if it is over 12 months there is no warranty left, also you would have to inform the catalogue that you were selling it for the warranty to change hands.

I have seen things worth several thousand of pounds worth of thing's, being sold for a few hundred of pounds because they were sold in a auction and at the end, of it they had the highest bid.

its 10 months Old, but if i dont get 625 for the two its no loss to me, ill put it in our bedroom as we plan decorating the bedroom in september.

People expect things to be given to them nowadays.

So why dont you put it in the bedroom rather than selling it or do you need the extra money, to put towards some occasion coming up that is rather special?

I seriously do not understand why you bought the tv just because you decided that you could there is no point yet again i will say it there is no point!

Lol and you say people expect things to be given to them that is not the case most people just know what things are worth and sadly you are not one of them otherwise you would not be paying that much for a tv now you would wait abit longer and use the extra money each month for something that is needed rather than just wanted.

If I was gonna spend £3k on a 3d TV I would want to take the tribe down to a showroom and try it for a while, Its no good if one of you feels ill after watching it.

My nephew felt ill after watching a 3d film.

Well its pointless continuing talking about this topic, you all obviously think i'm bragging dispite telling you my reasons, at the end of the day i will be sat playing gran tourismo 5 in 3d and watching the world cup in 3d, as well as watching the movies currently available.

thats what i wanted and thats what i'm going to be doing now, so you can stop the flaming.

and my weddings sorted now so you can stop mentioning that as well.

Or perhaps I could request the mods deduct reputation points off you for not contributing to the topic and flaming.

I don't think anyone is flaming, just can't see any logic here that all. It's been said it's your money at the end of the day, you can do what you like it with, but you did come on here (as you've done a few times) asking for advice, which again it seems you take no notice, so again the motive of you posting is questionable so expect to hear what you don't want to hear.

Everyone here is helpful, I just don't think you do yourself any favors that's all. To me a lot of your posts seemed based on attention seeking.

Oh just grow up and get a brain cell but not to many or you might become dangerous to the human race with more than 2 and what do you expect to happen when you ask for advice and then basically turn, round and say basically "well F off i ain't gonna listen you don't know what your on about".

You are bragging full stop and i don't know where or how you are going to watch the world cup, in 3D considering sky and virgin are not transmitting it in 3d.

And enjoy your 2 movies and 1 or 2 games in 3d i will stick to playing games at far better quality and far more, enjoyable than you can on a pathetic console that cannot have any quality adjusted.

Say what you want your bragging full stop!

You don't listen to people so why bother posting for advice i think the world would be allot better without people, who have no intelligence in what they do other than how to get in to more debt for the sake of going, " i got something that is bigger and better than yours".

Well you certainly won't be watching the World cup this year in 3D(Unless you plan on going to the Cinema) or playing GT5 till November. So that leaves the 1 3D Blu Ray that is available. This has all been said a few times. You will be very disappointed.

A complete waste of money and technology. You will end up buying films remade in 3D that were ***** in 2D. The industry are doing it because they can. A Fist full of Dollars in 3D. Erm great....

Similar to CD re-masters that don't sound any different to the originals.
