Help

Am on Virgin Broadband, bought wireless router as son needs to use laptop and xbox in his room or downstairs, cannot get the dam thing to work

Someone suggested the home plugs, do I need a router for these, my modem is the webstar

And which ones work with Virgin Media please:dozey:

Re: Help

If using more than one PC/console at the same time then YES you need a router.

Normally the homeplugs will connect to the LAN side of the router with the modem on the WAN. If you need to connect more than one machine to the far end of the homeplug then you need a small switch or hub.

So for example the modem will connect to a router, the router to PC/consoles with a homeplug extending the ethernet from the router to for example the bedroom and if more than one PC/Console is in the bedroom a hub/switch between them and the homeplug.

If you only use one PC/Console at any one time then the modem can go right to the homeplug and the other homeplug directly into the console/PC and no router/hub is needed

Re: Help

I am confused what is a switch/hub

My son needs to use his laptop downstairs or his xbox in his room, they would not be on at the same time, but I may be using my pc in my bedrook can I just use a router or do I need a switch/hub

Sorry to be a pain but just cannot get any of this into my head am driving myself round the bend

Kymmy 21-06-2010 13:37

Re: Help

A router is needed to share an internet connection, most routers though have 4 LAN ports so you can only wire in 4 devices. A hub or Switch (a switch is a slightly more intelligent hub) can take one of those router LAN ports and expand it further.. For example a router has 4 ports, wire in an 8 port hub/switch to one of those ports (via either a cable or homeplug) and your router now has the capability of sharing 10 wired devices to the internet instead of just 4..

In your case I was suggesting that you could leave the router downstairs and use one of the lan ports to run a cable upstairs/homeplug to a hub/switch. That then would give you 3 ports downstairs and however many the hub/switch has (minus one for the connection) upstairs ;)

you did reboot the modem after you connected it to the router?

Re: Help

Does the laptop have an internal wireless card? If not you will need a https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/06/42.jpg These usually come with a short cable which you should use rather than have this plugged directly in to the laptop (this will break sooner rather than later if plugged in directly). Also bare in mind the distance from the wireless router as the basic one supplied by Virgin only transmits a short distance (ours manages 15 feet or so horizontally).

Don't know about X-Boxes but Wii have an internal wireless connection and ours picked up the router signal easily.

We are connected PC to standard Modem then Modem to wireless router. Touch wood it all works well.

Re: Help

yes rebooted, even had someone come and look at it and they couldnt fix either

Re: Help

zing_deleted 21-06-2010 13:53

Re: Help

your Virgin broadband is it cable or over a bt line? edit looks like the webstar is cable

does your rotuer have a wireless light on it? have you checked the router pages to ensure wireless is being transmitted?

if so did it come with a set up cd? did you run it?

In the set up if you ran it did it have an option to turn on and encrypt wireless?

if you didnt run set up is there a little radio tower like symbol lit up on the router?

What make and model router is it?

Scousemouse: Do you or do you not have a router at present?

If you do: can you post the brand and model?

I set ours up as Hubby gets lost :D

If you are on Virgin Cable Broadband you need a specific Wireless router for cable (ours was free from Virgin). If you get broadband via a phone line you will need a different Wireless Router.

Seems like you went out a bought one retail so you will need to check what type of connection it will work with. There have been several threads from people having problems with Belkin, which don't seem to be an issue with Netgear.

OK, so you have a wireless router that Virgin supplied?

There is no need to go looking for a wired router, as the Virgin supplied router has wired capability as well.

zing_deleted 21-06-2010 14:18

Re: Help

on on the front of the router is there s blue light that looks like a radio tower?

open you browser and type( where you normally do www.) 192.168.1.1(think this is correct for netgear) a box should open looking a user name and password. Admin for username and password for password(unless you have changed these)

Have a look in wireless settings tell us what you see

scousemouse 21-06-2010 14:19

Re: Help

Ok so I have changed my pc and gone from xp to windows 7 will this make any difference to the router

hope not as they charged me £40 for it (netgear WNR2000) have read a few reports saying this is rubbish should I change it and if so to what please

Bloke I had to fix it works with computers and he didnt have a clue what was wrong, really fed up now, son on my back all the time

zing_deleted 21-06-2010 15:46

Re: Help

I had the WNR2000 and it worked ok

you have not answered any of my questions ,have you tried what I said? I am trying to help and I mean no offence but you need to try to follow instructions :)

---------- Post added at 14:46 ---------- Previous post was at 14:40 ----------

http://www.upc.nl/pdf/upc_handleidin...ar_wnr2000.pdf follow the instructions on page 16 and 17 upto section 2 page 17

look at page 5 and ensure the modem is plugged into the socket labeled 3 in the picture

Ignore firmware update for now. Tell me what lights are lit up from page 16

Then click wireless settings and tell me what you can see

scousemouse 21-06-2010 17:18

Re: Help

Nothing comes up with the router which is why I wanted new one, even bloke who came said it is fault with router

Which is why wanted home plug, very rarely son and I on at same time so if can just use modem it will stop sending me round the bend

I know your getting annoyed with me zing, but have tried everything

zing_deleted 21-06-2010 17:22

Re: Help

I am not getting annoyed I promise :)

so there are no lights on the router at all? when connected to router is there a computer thats wired to the router? if so does that access the net?

Kymmy 21-06-2010 17:22

Re: Help

Scousemouse, no-one is getting annoyed with you... Just that you didn't provide the full details in your initial posts..

A few questions..

Have you reset your wnr2000 to defualt and then rebooted your router and then PC (for that matter if your PC set to aquire an IP address automatically.

If yes then do a START+R ( or click start>>Run) and type CMD

then type
Code:

IPCONFIG /ALL
and cut/paste the result here and that will enable us to see if the router is being connected to or not :)

scousemouse 21-06-2010 17:32

Re: Help

Yes promise, have tried everything and no connection to internet, which is why bloke you came round said it was the router, have been using ethernet cable from modum to laptop and x box, just I keep tripping over wires when he has it in his room

Thats why thought would buy new router and power plugs to see if it would work

ok :) if you got the router off VM you should be able to get it replaced

Just one more thing did you make sure the modem was plugged into the correct port on the router?

scousemouse 21-06-2010 17:54

Re: Help

Just yes or no and I will leave you all alone, must have driven you all round the bend

zing_deleted 21-06-2010 18:15

Re: Help

yes :)

if you want to send me the netgear I will test it for you and set it up if you want to try that first? if not just go with the new router and a pair of homeplugs we can set you up round that easily enough later :)

scousemouse 21-06-2010 18:19

Re: Help

Hate the sight of netgear, so am just gonna bin it, will send for that one, all I ask now is can you advise me on which homeplugs would work with it and will try them

Kymmy 21-06-2010 18:41

Re: Help

Netgears are fine, if the router is defunct then no matter what make it is it simply won't work. But it is a common mistake from a non-techy to assume it's the routers fault. Sending it to Zing will confirm either way and will only take a few days

zing_deleted 29-06-2010 19:36

Re: Help

on your laptop tell us exactly what you do to try and access the net

will the laptop connect via cable?

if it will not connect via cable or wireless I would try setting up a test user admin account to see if its a settings conflict in yoru user files

control panel ( if its vista select classic view if its windows 7 select view and small icons) click users /user account . Click manage another user then select creat a user.Call it test and make sure its admin

log off then log into test account and try
