Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Hi. Haven't posted here in ages.
I read somewhere that Virgin Mobile would be offering the HTC Desire on contract. Not sure of exact terms of the contract but existing Virgin customers could have it from £30 a month for 18 months or £25 a month for 2 years. http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-...eal-yet-680099 It's a phone I really want but I have a few questions about Virgin Mobile
Thanks in advance Martyn |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
ok i got this last week its an awesome phone :)
ya get 1.02GB data per month under the £25 a month for 2 years deal (Fair useage policy) and Ive barely uses 0.01 of it in a week! signal seems fine but never had a problem on T- Mobile Customer support seemed fine but i only phoned up to ask something about the data but generally a quality phone got for it :) |

How do you keep track of how much Internet you are using? |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
If the data is enough really depends on what you're doing.
If you're streaming from last.fm or spotify all the time you're going to eat through it. If you're just doing normal usage, checking email, browsing the web a bit, it'll be fine. I'd say I'm pretty heavy on usage in terms of browsing (but I don't stream audio or video much) and I usually do about 15mb a day just with web browsing on the bus, and apps like facebook pulling data down, which is about 500mb a month. It's really easy to track usage, there's a free app called netcounter which will log your data usage by interface, so wifi is kept seperate to mobile, and you can set alerts on usage levels, so if you're close to your limit it'll alert you. Signal is fine, excellent in some areas, marginal in others, but about the same as the other networks. Customer support has been great for me so far, accidently changed my tariff online because there's no confirmation just a click and it's changed and they changed it back immediately for me no hassle. |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
either that or log onto the virginmobile page and it shows you how much data remaining. :) i tend to connect to mates wi-fi networks if im going to be doing something hefty with the phone. and i love the fact i can have a switch on the front to turn off mobile net and then turn on wi-fi so i know im not accidentily using the data when i dont want to.

Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
The HTC HD2 and the HTC Desire are both out of stock on the Virgin Mobile website at the moment.

Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Desire should be back in stock from Monday (unless they've sold out again already!)

I think last time there were also some issues with HTC being able to fulfill orders in time - as all the other networks all seems to run out around the same time

Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
The HD2 won't be back in stock though as it's been discontinued as a handset on VM as far as I know

Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Thanks guys for the responses. My last question is will 1GB a month really be enough? T-Mobile offer 3GB. This phone always needs to be online except when at home using my wireless connection.
|
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
1GB is plenty, after a couple of month with the Desire on Virgin I usually use about 600MB a month.

I've put my name down for one on Monday but they aren't in stock at the moment and should be in today. I am supposed to be phoned when they come in but I was the 9th person waiting. Any ideas when Virgin get new stock?

Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
It seems you can now download the Voice search app from the Android Market.
It's still missing Speech to Text though |

Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
if you got widgets there is either one there or one you can download
as for data press and hold the off button and you get an option to turn data off |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
The HTC Desire is full of bugs. HTV and Virgin know about them but aren't making it public.
Virgin customer service has gone from being the best ever to the worst, they repeatedly get my bundles wrong, the website barely works, they never reply to emails sent from the website. If I wasn't in so deep now, I'd change to a different, more honest service provider |

You will have an issue with some of the American firmware upgrades available if you download the wrong one but that is easily rectified, read the reviews first.;) |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
American firmware for which handset the HD2 or the Desire?
|
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Quote:
It may have been something along the lines of the American version of T-Mobile I think and some firmware from there did not like the UK version of the phone. He is always on the HD2 forums as well. |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Well there is the T mous American version which is different . On the Dev site there are 2 different sections for each . A lot of the HD2 Leo custom firmwares are compatible with the American device but IIRC there is a radio issue the other way around. Some of the radios work with both devices though

I agree with everything above except signal, out of all mobile phone networks I rate t-mobile/virgin the worst and I live in the city.

It just depends on where you live for your experiences of the networks. |

Phones are ok just the network and billing that sucks :)

I find paying 10p to speak to an agent over a fault annoying especially when the guy did not have a clue and in the end I googled and fixed the issue myself.:erm: |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
My Desire had an update this morning (1.21.405.2) Not the awaited android 2.2 one though :(
And now I am resetting up my scene again. |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
[QUOTE=Masque;35044868]I am not denying it as I do not work for Virgin Mobile.:erm:;)
Virgin Media, Virgin mobile. It's all crap service these days. |

If not how can you comment. I have been a Virginmedia customer for around 15 years through all its various guises with no real major issues in that time and I do not have a BT line to my property and nor do I want one. As for Virgin Mobile I have been a customer for around 5 years and the only issue I have is the 10p charge for calling technical support. |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Yes, I'm a customer. How typical of a Virgin customer service person to doubt what the customer says.
But they have finally, after two months and many broken promises, replaced my faulty HTC. They have yet to refund me for overcharging on 3 occasions, for the cost of taking their calls while abroad, for accidentally removing my roaming facility while I was away on business. But I'm sure with staff such as you I can be confident of being treated with respect and honesty |

Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
So why did you say
"Are you actually a customer? If not how can you comment." as you're staff, your opinion isn't really valid. |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire

I was a customer well before I was a member of staff and I am not a Virgin Mobile staff member either. I am a customer because I want to be not because I work for them so quite valid. |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire

'It's all crap service these days' isn't a valid statement either as you don't speak for ALL the people who use them. You may experience a crap service but it doesn't mean it all is. I don't experience a crap service. I also get my 10 refunded if I make a call and it's their fault ;) |

Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Thinking of getting htc after contract runs out next week.
What's the cheapest deal available for a free phone for virgin customers? Dial a phone doing for £20.00 month on o2 but no data included. Are there plenty of good quality games on htc (currently use iPod touch) Does logmein ignition work on htc? Does BBC iplayer stream ok? What about other channels? |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Android has loads of games available for it. It may be worth waiting to see what you can get with the Desire HD next month or October
|
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
Quote:
One area Android lacks at the moment is games, the overall standard of them isn't anywhere near what it is on the iphone. It's getting better, with more and more iphone devs jumping over, but it's just a very immature market with very few stand out games. Logmein Ignition has an app that works extremely well, it's €23.99. Iplayer streams perfectly using the website if you're on 2.2, there's also apps that work well. You can stream anything that uses flash based players as android 2.2 has native flash 10.1 support (including VM's player). |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
I dunno the games I play are pretty good

And this make what I've said inaccurate? Are you saying that for some reason I should make allowances for non-white-europeans? That's a bit racist... Of course, it's not actually true - some may be in the Philippines, but the ones I've spoken to are mostly UK based. ---------- Post added at 15:53 ---------- Previous post was at 15:51 ---------- Quote:

As other posters have said the BBC iplayer works fine on their phones so possibly you need to know what is different with their setup rather than saying it does not work, remember this is a help site and that is why people come on here as they tend to get the result theyu are looking for. |
Re: Virgin Mobile & HTC Desire
I didn't know froyo had been released to virgin handsets.
