anyone that can help

When I Copy an item prior to Pasting it where does my computer keep it? Does my computer keep it forever in some dark corner or does it disappear in to thin air when I swich off my machine. Will all thoughs bits of images and word eventually clog up my machine?

Re: Help needed please

The text/image/whatever is copied to the 'clipboard'. This is a virtual construct and part of the operating system. The data will either be held temporarily in the memory of your computer or cached to the hard drive (depending on its size).

If it's stored in the memory then the memory allocated to it will be overwritten according to the priority of the other things you're doing, so if the computer needs the memory for something else then the data may get cached out to the drive.

If at any stage (either initially, or down the line) it gets written to the drive it will remain on that area of the drive until such time as your Operating System chooses to overwrite it.

Generally speaking though when the Operating System no longer requires the copied data it will mark the area that's been used to store it (either the memory, or the hard disk) as 'free' and it will be overwritten as required.

Short Answer: You shouldn't need to worry about managing these copied fragments of data, your Operating System will take care of that for you.

:D defirish. Since I started to come on this forum and discovered Photobucket I have asked my self the same questions every time I use one of my vast hoard of smillies. Being a self declared technically challenged person I am so glad someone else has asked these questions. https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2016/10/1.gif

Ok, you copied somethinge (what was it?) and pasted it, and now you can't find it?

Generally speaking the 'clipboard' isn't actually accessible, it's a sort of holding area where the Operating System puts things.

If you can tell me what it is you've lost I might be able to help you find it.

Re: Help needed please

I was on photobucket and done the usual thing of making a file then I wanted to copy and paste till I needed to use them like say a birthday or a smilie on a page. I right clicked on the picture and then I clicked to copy and paste and that was the end. I dont know where they ended up :(

joglynne 25-05-2010 20:37

Re: Help needed please

Well I don't know about defirish but I haven't lost anything. It's more a case of I can paste an image successfully, then maybe an hour later if I haven't copied anything in the mean time I can still paste the original image so it obviously hasn't died away through hanging around somewhere in the ether that passes as my hard drive.

So how long can it survive unfed, unused and abandoned as no longer wanted. Poor thing.

Ah I see defirish has actually lost her image which is a far more important issue than my whimsical ponderings.

Raistlin 25-05-2010 20:38

Re: Help needed please

If the copy/paste operation failed, and the copy was from a resource that isn't available any more (like a web page) then you may find that you'll need to go looking for the images on photobucket again.

I have to admit I'm slightly confused as to what you were trying to do, so let me check I've understood.

You had photobucket open in your web browser, and you were copying images from it into a blank document? Or were you saving the images to your drive and into a folder somewhere?

Sasha222 25-05-2010 20:42

Re: Help needed please

Well that was the idea but I only got as far as pressing the image and it gives 4 options and one is when you left click on the image it say copy and after that I dont know where it went :(

In general the clipboard will only hold one 'copy' operation at a time so the item/data will remain in the clipboard until you either a) perform another copy operation (at which point it is replaced in the clipboard by the new data), or until you log out (the clipboard is cleared), or c) you shutdown (again, the clipboard is cleared).

The clipboard is only a 'virtual' thing though, it doesn't really exist - this means that you only really generally have access to it through the copy/paste functionality. The storage of the data from the clipboard in the memory or on the disk is fairly temporary, and your Operating System will seek to re-use the storage area at some stage.

Ok, if it's been copied then it will be currently being held temporarily in your Operating System (probably in the memory, but possibly on the hard drive). You will only have access to it through the copy/paste functionality, in order to get access to the image that you've copied you will need to paste it into a document/file of an appropriate type.

Re: Help needed please

So would I be right in saying that it the copy paste function didn't work as I didn't place it to the place I wanted it or does the operation sysem hold onto it till choose a place to put it. I did try and put it im my pictures in my documents but the paste options was not hightlighted

Ok, there's a reason for that.

When you copy an image from a web site you only copy the 'data' for that image, your Operating System needs a container to store that data in - that's what it uses files for. You would need to either copy the file from the site, or you would need to paste the data for the image into an appropriate file.

Find an image on the site, and instead of doing a copy/paste try right-clicking and selecting 'Save Image As'. This will allow you to choose a location (My Pictures) and then save a copy of the image in that location as a new file. You should hopefully find this easier than trying to copy/paste. Note that not all web sites will allow you to right-click on the images though.

Re: Help needed please

For future reference as far as 'smilies' go, I'd recommend a little utillity called Getsmilie.
Saves remembering having to copy and paste the URL of an emoticon (and you can use your virginmedia webspace to store them)

Oh I done that and thought I was doing the wrong thing

Raistlin 25-05-2010 20:58

Re: Help needed please

Right-click 'Save Image As ...' is always a lot easier than trying to copy/paste images from a web site IMHO.

Sasha222 25-05-2010 20:58

Re: Help needed please

I thought that the only thing I could use was the copy and paste and that would only work so I can put the stuff in my pictures so in my document?

Raistlin 25-05-2010 21:02

Re: Help needed please

Yep, you should be able to :)

Sasha222 25-05-2010 21:06

Re: Help needed please

The thing I wanted to use it for is like when someone has a birthday and you can put the birthday pic up or say for smilies that you cant do with pictures that you can do with photobucket and thats why I was trying it out today

Raistlin 25-05-2010 21:12

Re: Help needed please

Ok, so ...

You don't actually want to save the pictures locally (on your machine).

You want to include a picture from the Internet in a post?

If you tell me exactly what you're trying to do, and with what, it will make it a whole lot easier :) We could be going round in circles all night otherwise :D :D

---------- Post added at 21:12 ---------- Previous post was at 21:11 ----------

In fact, provide a link here to an image that you're talking about and tell me what you want to do with it and we'll go from there :)

Sasha222 25-05-2010 21:19

Re: Help needed please

When you go to photobucket you set up the images you want and then in files and then You copy to save them but I dont know where to they save to. If you save them to the pictures in the documents then they become fiddly to try and post them to a website but using photobucket seems way easier if I could just the funtion right and where they actually go to once you press copy.

At that point im totally lost

Raistlin 25-05-2010 21:24

Re: Help needed please

If you're right-clicking on an image and then selecting 'copy' you aren't saving that image to anywhere that you can use it, other than to 'paste' it into another document - which you're said is 'fiddly'.

If you have a picture in photobucket and you can find the 'URL' for it (that is, the web address for the specific picture that you want) then you can use that address to insert the picture into a post.

Again, if you can link me to an example in Photobucket I can probably show you how to do it - at the moment though I'm flying blind because I'm still not 100% sure that we're both talking about the same thing . . . sorry.

Re: Help needed please

No, it won't.

You're better leaving it in the photobucket until you want to use it, then do as Ben has suggested above to get it into the post.

Ah right. I done everything right so and its not possible so paste it anywhere so only to leave it in photobucet til its needed

Raistlin 25-05-2010 21:57

Re: Help needed please

If you copied it to your computer you would only have to upload it again whenever you wanted to use it and then do as Ben's described above.

Better to leave it online in the photobucket and then link to it whenever you need it.

Re: Help needed please

When I was being very brave today trying out the photobucket I dont know how it happend but my icons are after copying down to the end of my computer and I cant get rid of them so I have same icons on my desktop as I have at the end near where my start button is

Raistlin 25-05-2010 22:12

Re: Help needed please

So ...

You have icons (do you mean shorcuts? You double-click them and they start a program or open a file) on your desktop. You also have icons on the bar near your Start button which are the same as the ones on your desktop.

You want to get rid of the ones on your desktop?

What happens when you right-click on one that you want to delete and select 'delete' from the menu that you get?

Sasha222 25-05-2010 22:15

Re: Help needed please

I was afraid to delet them in case I deleted the ones on my desktop as well and I have an up and down arrow and also a dotted line and next to it it says desktop

Ah, you've enabled the desktop tool bar by the sounds of it, right click the taskbar, point to toolbars and click on Desktop :)

Raistlin 25-05-2010 22:20

Re: Help needed please

Right-click on the the bit at the bottom of your desktop, where the programs show when you have them open (the bar that runs all the way across the bottom of the screen), you should get a menu that pops up, hover over the word 'Toolbars' in that menu. You should get a list appear next to the menu, there will be an item in that list that reads 'Desktop'.

If it has a tick next to it click on the word Desktop in the list and you should find that it dissapears from the bar.

Sasha222 25-05-2010 22:23

Re: Help needed please

Brill. Oh thanks so much Rob. I spend all day trying to get rid and it was so simple. So is there a way of stopping it from happening again

Raistlin 25-05-2010 22:26

Re: Help needed please

It shouldn't happen unless you accidentally click that toolbar menu item, or unless you somehow drag the Desktop shortcut folder to the bar at the bottom of the screen.

It should be fairly difficult to do by accident, so I wouldn't worry too much - at least you know how to fix it now :)

Sasha222 25-05-2010 22:29

If you are talking about an image you have posted on this forum defirish then you can only cancel any part of your post whilst you still have an edit option showing at the bottom right of your post. After that time I would assume a member of the team could edit it for you if you had a good reason for wanting them to do so.

Hi Rob. Just figured out that when you left click on the link and just go to the website then you just press ctrl and c and then when you go to the page it ctrl and v and any pic that you copyied previous to that is cancelled out.
