Hi,

My area is (according to response on DS) currently part of a trial for a new OD search feature that when you type in a word, it allows you to search through Catch up, TV Choice, FilmFlex, Music OD and/or All OD. It also shows a selection of OD content that I assume are (or will be) tailored to the sprt of things the viewer normally watches.

Main part of my feedback so far is... Just little things like it'd be good if it searched V+ recordings too. The graphics are OK but some branding would be better (at moment very simple and plain) but just a bit of VM red etc would spruce it up a little.

Speed of use, very good! Being able to search any part of the content name (for instance if you want Britains Got Talent, you should be able to find that by searching any of those words eg. Talent rather than having to type Britain...).

A 'remind me later' or bookmark feature would be good so as you come across content that you're interested in you can mark it to go back to another time (assuming content still available OD).

The ability to store search words/terms so that if it's a favourite File or Music Video you watch over and over then you can just reselect.

A new option from the 'Home' menu simply to 'Search all OD' (No brainer surely)!!!

I wouldn't be surprised though if like the original OD Search option this disappears after the trial for 2 or 3 months after it woking perfectly fine apart from on some old Pace boxes!!! Will be a shame but that's life!

Very impressed overall though. I have to say that VM really are starting to use the technology that's available on their wholly-owned network. About time too overall.

Amazing really considering it's ntl rebranded and it was Telewset that innovated, ntl used to just follow. (I'm ex-ntl btw).

Intelligent TV eh?! (is this any thing to do with the Tivo interface? Is this VM design only or is it something they are working on with tivo already)?

It's TIVO like, yes... can't say too much as it's all still in development... I think it's supposed to be a blind trial, so you just discover the features as they add them.

Can confirm this is on my V+ today in Telford area.

Must say I'm liking it and especially now you can see something similar too using "more like this"
Watched Skins, pressed more like this when pressing stop and a similar program did come up.

Great feature :)

All I can suggest is moving Search to Home menu, and putting Settings, Help & Info together

Agreed. I use the search option quite a bit - mainly for music videos.

My top 3 wants are:

A single search option that searches ALL VoD content types
That single search option is then located on the Home menu
Wildcard searches are enabled for easier searching

Well I dunno about a blue button facility but I certainly have search on Catch Up and TV Choice with my basic Pace Di4000-N V Box here in Aylesbury (Watford).

Could that be what the extra channel and TS Stream that appeared recently were for?

Yeah did the reboot, etc the other night still didnt, work.
Just got the girlfriend to re-try it, she says it is working now.
i just hope it not a problem that raises itshead during peak hours, as OnDemand does have issues during peak times

We are not aware of any issues with the Wolves RHE having issues at peak times.. what error are you getting?

You get an option at the bottom of the 'Home' screen with the blue button and the 'Prees Blue to search' or something simliar

I thought that now we are all singing from the same NGTV hymn sheet that we all had the exact same services available to us. So does this mean that there still can be (see Radio Times for) regional head-end variations?

The enhanced search replaces the current search functions in the On Demand areas, so is currently only accessed from there

Some feedback and comments on the new search facility.

On the whole very pleased with it and the speed at which results are returned but a few improvements are required:

1) A search option should be placed on the main menu
2) Make the "ALL OD" category the default search category
3) If a search does not return any programmes in the default search category, you cannot press left to the preceding category. You can only press right to the next category. (pressing left just backspaces your previous input string). This would not be such a problem if 2) above was implemented.
4) Page numbers are not in the usual format (page x of y).

If any of the usual VM staffers on CF would care to pass this on, I'd appreciate it. Thx.

Is it possible to enter a space when searching, e.g. could I search for "big bang theory" rather than "big" to narrow the search?

Another suggestion: When searching Music On Demand, a "Play all" option would be extremely beneficial.

Anything like this is rolled out in stages to make sure nothing breaks.

Just tried it and you're right Ben, thanks (I could have sworn I tried that! :blush:). However, it doesn't narrow the results so I think it must now be searching for "Big" or "Bang".

The basic NGTV roll-out is complete but this is additional function on top of that. It has a 'More Like This' function as well.

Tried the searches: BRO, BROT, BROTH

It did not find Band of Brothers (HD) - of which there are 11 episodes in TVChoice!?

A search for: 'PEA' finds Black Eyed Peas ok though

Looks like there are some bugs to iron out.

All of the above and this ...

I just bought one of the old Pace remote control keyboards on eBay and I can't get it to work with the search facility. It assumes that you are using a numeric remote control and it does not offer the standard editing interface that you use with e-mail etc. (see also 3 regarding left arrow/backspace above) so you have to use the numeric keys on the keyboard to generate letters, spaces and punctuation! :(

To be honest that's because the Keyboards haven't been sold or supported by Virgin for several years now, so the services aren't tested for compatability against them

They've deviated from the standard interface that is used elsewhere and that customers are familiar with. Even the left arrow key cannot be used for navigation! The Blue button is supposed to be Delete and Green should toggle between Numeric and Alpha input.

Tell them to confirm to the existing user interface standards both for text editing and navigation!

I think the screen looks a bit ropey too. The navigation tabs just don't look right.

The navigation on the search screen is a little more complex than on others, but to clarify:

Green - used for Page Up (as is elsewhere).

Blue - could have been used for delete; however that relegates the "More Like This" functionality to an option from the (i) button programme info screen, hence the deviation.

Left button deletes characters while the text input field is highlighted (watch the arrow indication - you will see it change when switching highlight from the results area to the input field). Once you have results, left button will let you switch categories to the left unless you use the up button to put highlight back on the text input field or use number keys to change the search term.

A play all button would be very good. Would be nice to make playlists on the fly too, hopefully a feature for Tivo?

I think it's great. The wife saw an advert for a show called Accidentally on Purpose. I went in and searched for it, the search found it in the TV guide, let me series link it from there and also found the first two episodes that she missed on catch up :tu:

Available here today as well, but I can only access the new search feature when stopping an on demand program and selecting the new third 'more like this' option. I've also noticed when searching with the new search, for example, The Wire it lists the full 12 episode list while the normal list in the old search and in HBO channel list only shows 8.

When the text input field is highlighted, everything should work as it does elsewhere when editing a text field (e.g. Blue is delete, Left arrow is move left within the text etc.). Then, when you're in the results area Blue and Yellow can take on the appropriate behaviour in that context (More Like This, Series Record etc.) and page up/down is performed by the page up and page down keys. Where is Green Page Up?

The search in BBC iPlayer uses Blue as clear/delete as does set-top-box e-mail which also uses Red to toggle upper/lower case, Green to toggle alpha/number mode, Yellow to access symbols and the arrow keys do what they should: move left, right, up and down. There are several other places where the keys operate like this for editing text and always have done in all of the years that I've had a digital box.

Red/Green as PgUp/PgDn are standard elsewhere - TV Guide & other On Demand listings screens, for example. It would be nice to use the actual PgUp/PgDn buttons, I agree, but not all RC units have these. The difficulty is coming up with a standard which works for all boxes and all remotes; given the very large number of possible combinations, in practice this becomes rather difficult. Your focus-sensitive blue button idea sounds rather good, actually - very useful feedback. I'll take that one away, thank you. :)

Noticed this new search menu yesterday, but there seems to be some teething problems with the catch-up part.

1 - Some BBC programmes (may be others too, but it's these I've noticed) from Sunday/Monday don't seem to be on catch-up. Panorama from Monday for example - I can't see this under A-Z or search.

2 - Search function not finding everything. Take Newsnight. A-Z listing and it finds all the "episodes" you'd expect. Catch-up search and it only finds yesterdays. Not sure if this by accident or design.

I'd also agree it could do with an option at the bottom of the screen to say how many pages of results there are. Page up & down is fine, but "Page x of y" would be good.

I'm in BS37, BTW.

This new search feature has landed in my area so I thought I'd give it a quick spin.

When into it, with the blue "more like this" button at the bottom of the page. There were already four selections of programmes there so I pressed the blue "more like this" button on the Scottish parliament programme hoping to get more of the same. (Not sure why I selected Scottish parliament, perhaps I just wanted to see what those Scots were wasting our taxpayers money on...:) ). I digress.

But instead of getting more Scotch Parliament action, one of the options was Jeremy Kyle!:td:

Now, I know the Scots are a rough bunch but they're not as bad as that total plonker...:LOL:

I've just given it one last try, so I pressed the magic blue button on Homes Under The Hammer, an easy subject to find similar stuff, one would think. This is what I got:

A Century Of Fatherhood
Crop To Shop
Gardener's World
Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives

At least when I'm bored, I've got a new toy to play with now. I guess Gardener's World is related to stuff about homes, but Parallel Worlds??

Can i just ask a question ben does the search say you type in horror mostly horror films come up or with horror in the title does this depend on your chosen package?,i did ask the chap who i beta test for but he had nothing to do with the testing phase.

I think whatever you type in will search the whole thing. So both Title and Genre

For instance I've just typed in 'Comedy' and it's brought up both things with Comedy in the title and things like 'Frasier'

We dont sub to movies but put a search in for batman returns which is on in a while and it didnt come up just golmaal returns which i guess is pay per view.

If you're not subscribed to a channel its programmes are knocked out of the searchable list for the tv guide search (at the moment, anyway).

I appreciate that button functionality has to cater for all RCs out there although I am surprised that there are some (perhaps not that many?) that do not have PgUp/PgDn (how do those people live? :)).

My RC keyboard is one of those remotes and I think it should be supported by the search as it's the very sort of application that the keyboards were intended for. :tu:

The context-sensitivity should not apply only to Blue but to Red, Green and Yellow too (or we'll need more coloured buttons! :rolleyes:).

From an episode of King of Queens ... ... it's apparent that the underlying software performs some kind of profiling based on your choice of programming. ;)

It certainly sounds like the search can be quite clever when it wants to be, and I'm impressed with the interface.

But.. I've just searched for "east" - it should pick up any episodes of Eastenders from last Tuesday onwards.. surely?? Nope. Not even Sunday's omnibus. A-Z listing and scroll through, they're all there.

I noticed it doesn't pick up part of a word, I was trying entour the other night to see if it found entourage and it would not, so probably the same thing for Eastenders and east

Good suggestion well presented, unfortunately no difference. They're all there in A-Z, but searching for "Eastenders", "Eastend", "East" or "Eastender" returns diddly squat.

Nice one, thanks for that. I've been playing with it a bit more, and it seems that Catch-Up is the only tab not searching. Everything else is really impressive.

Any ideas on a timescale for these issues to be fixed? I'm just wondering whether we're talking days or weeks..

Not sure, but definately not before the World Cup ends as Virgin stop with a lot of TV changes to minimise any possibility of channel loss (no matter how brief)

Thanks. Working in mobile telecoms operations myself, I can totally appreciate a change freeze during "peak" periods, although quite why the new search function was introduced in such a period - is a little lost on me.

I'd be interested to know if these search issues are resolved before the weekend, as I've got a tech visit now booked for this and one other issue Saturday morning. I don't think for one minute it's a box issue, but CS insisted on a home visit to "investigate" this, so if that's what it takes...

With DTV the are only so many scenarios and each one has what is required to fix the issue, and if it advises a engineer visit is required then an engineer visit is what you will get.;)

At least a month since the football finished, and the bug is still very much evident..

I really do hope this isn't going to be brushed under the carpet!
