Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline
Um...is there actually a problem here at all? Firstly their privacy policy has adapted to how FB is used these days - people are willing to share more information than when it started.
Secondly if you don't want the whole world knowing your stuff - don't put it on the internet. |

Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline
Knowing how to use FB's privacy settings and limiting the information you put on FB is key to all this.
People must take on some responsibility for their own privacy. Instead, they put their entire life on line and expects the hosting organisation to do it for them automatically. Quote:

If anyone shares info on facebook (or ANY social networking place) and doesn't check the privacy controls, then they should expect to see their info published. The solution is simple. If you want to publish stuff on facebook (or any social networking site), but don't want the world to read your info, check (and if necessary set) the privacy controls. Otherwise, don't put the info on the site in the first place. |
Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline
the problem is they have changed privacy controls making it hard to keep track often of what you have to do to keep what you want private while still being able to use a very useful tool to many

"Maggy" One moderator you dont want to annoy on here because she WILL track you down :p: I hate the idea of facebook, even more so knowing of people that have made drunken comments about work on it resulting in them getting the sack. Thats one of the many reasons Ive never bothered with it. If I wasnt so paranoid Id probably join in the FB fun but its just not for me. |

I am aware of the potential problems of posting on facebook. A friend of mine was angry once, and posted a comment to the effect that his boss was a very rude word beginning with F and ending with Wit. Trouble is, he forgot that his boss's wife was a facebook friend of his, so got called in to see the boss the next day and explain himself. That's not say the boss's wife would have said anything. I don't think she would (I've known her for years). Someone did, however. The moral of the story is you can use these sites quite safely, as long as you are careful what you post, and with any security settings offered by the site. Indeed, in my case, Facebook is actually quite handy. |
Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline
Thing is though (and not wanting to go too off topic) depending on how much you have had to drink just saying dont post when you're drunk doesnt always work. Im just glad Im a happy drunk and not an abusive one. I try to keep off forums when I know Ive had too much but it still happens. Good on you for keeping control, like you say, it wouldnt be too good if a mod starts posting drunken nonsense or randomly banning people :p: I've always thought that mods musn't drink that much because too much means all self control out the window
Maybe I just dont have enough friends to warrant a facebook account :D I still think its risky though, but Im dieing to know about this farm game thing that people harp on about, I might set up a false account, Id be happy doing that but not my real name for all to see |
Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline
You can play the farm game without facebook, no point letting everyone know you have killed all your sheep while you were down the pub with the local wench.

Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline
Sorry, but if you get sacked for posting something daft whilst being drunk, that's your fault, not Facebook's ;)
I actually like Facebook, apart the odd timewarp glitches. Just ensure that your privacy settings are done correctly. |

Re: Facebooks Eroding Privacy Policy: A Timeline
There are simple ways to test that Facebook is as private as you need it.
First is obviously stop posting stuff that you wish to be private if you have 'friends' that aren't among those that you wish to know your private stuff. Secondly, create a second FB account and do a search for yourself. If you're even findable at all then check what can be seen by someone who's not on your friends list and amend if necessary. Simple. The main problem with Facebook & privacy is that people don't know how to (or are too lazy to) look into how to make things private. It's all there if you look for it. |
