Land Ahoy!

A novice mariner who aimed to cruise from Gillingham to Southampton using a road map as his chart has come a cropper...

I live down by the Solent and believe me when I say there are stories like this every week.
I am really coming rather fond of the idea that anyone wishing to own or run a boat MUST pass a test..just they have to when driving. The waterways and off shore are just too damned crowded these days and there are too many inexperienced among them.

Well, its good that natural selection keeps picking off a number of idiots each year. ;)

This made me think of when Lord Blackadder planned to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope...

What a berk. He should be made to pay the cost of his "rescue." The RNLI have far more important things to do than act as a taxi service for twits.

In that case why don't we make ****ed up drinkers pay for their stupidity after a skinfull at the weekend when it lands them in A&E ?

It is not known whether the man eventually made it to Southampton.

.......and that's what I was thinking, then I saw your post as well:D

Anyway:

Captain Rum: You have a woman's legs, my lord! I'll wager those are legs that have never been sliced clean off by a falling sail, and swept into the sea before your very eyes.

Blackadder: Well, neither have yours.

Captain Rum: That's where you're wrong <throws aside table showing his lack of legs>

Because the NHS is paid for by national taxation and therefore this twonk has already contributed to its upkeep. The RNLI rely solely on the generosity of the general public, it is a charity and is manned largely by unpaid volunteers. They truly do have better things to spend their valuable resources on than rescuing idiots like him. They have no legal responsibility towards him, but they went to him, driven by their moral fortitude.

In that case I'd rather like a refund on my taxes that get wasted on drunken morons. ;)

Without this thread getting dragged too :notopic: whilst the RNLI is voluntary, they will have been co-ordinated by the government (and thus taxpayer funded) coastguard, and perhaps other agencies were involved too?

It is at the moment everyone's right to set sail if they wish to, and perhaps that is one of the few true freedoms we are left as a society to experience.

Maybe but I contend that if other people's lives are put at risk it's a freedom I'm prepared to see given up.

I live by one of the busiest stretches of coast between two major ports and the lifeguards and the air sea rescue are overburdened at times by people who have no idea what they are doing.

Add to that the idiot pedestrians who get themselves cut off by tides, fall off cliffs and I am coming round to the idea that those who indulge in really stupid, unthinking behaviour should have to pay the financial costs of their rescue.

If a sign says stay out of the water or away from the cliff and someone ignores the warning then they should pay especially if others have to risk their lives to make them safe.

I shall counter my opinion, on the basis that it should be based on the party's ability to pay. I am not suggesting that it should be a pre-request to rescue.

Did I say it should be?
I merely suggest that those who ignore warning signs and advice should expect to pay the costs of their rescue which can run into many, many thousands whilst STILL being rescued..

Why should the rest of us who do heed the warnings have to pay even if it is publicly funded on our behalf.

Sorry Maggy, that post's remarks were not aimed at any comments you posted, but was just a general thought. But perhaps, instead of writing, "I shall counter....," I should have written, "I should counter...." :)
