Since my post this morning I have found the following on The Register

Am I right in assuming this latest offering will tie in with the new TiVio? Shucks, beaten to it by Spectato. :D ---------- Post added at 18:30 ---------- Previous post was at 18:00 ---------- Quote:

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
I wonder if this will be entirely separate to Virgin's Filmflex service. It would be nice if things like the 48 hour rental make it across (I believe it's only 24 hours rental on Filmflex isn't it?).

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
so is cheaper to goto blockbusters, rent physical media, then to rent digitally.
oookay. |
Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
They just need to work out some kind of deal with Xbox live and/or PSN now, similar to the yanks Netflix deal

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
3.99 rofl

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
I was wondering when one of the big boys would launch a service like this in the UK, seems like there are so many in the US and that we were lagging behind. Sure would be nice to get this on to PS3/360/Wii and netenabled TVs.

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
Well I don't even use FilmFlex or Zune on the 360, I just either buy the bluray or wait till it is on Sky movies. But the service has to start somewhere and if there is no other serious competitor out there then VM can set what price they like.

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
The service will be open to all not just Virginmedia customers.

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
a netflix type service would be good, I cannot understand why virgin are doing this. Lovefilm is a cheaper way of doing it, surely the fact they are not sending out dvd's means they could do some sort of £8.99 per month for 5/6 rentals and a larger £15.99 for 10/12, instead of £3.99 per film, also if they used this model instead of filmflex more people would sign up and it could eventually rival Sky movies because you can watch the film when you want.

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
i can get dvd's from tescos at £1.99 a night or use my tesco dvds by post £17 for as many films as i can post back lol
as there is no postal expenses or the running of one of those nice dvd vending machines i expect it to cost me less to rent online being first doesnt mean charging what you like will work |
Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
don't forget about the 20Meg download cap :D
|
Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
They may not have to post DVDs out but the servers, bandwidth and 24x7 tech support probably cost a bit more.

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
There is still a big difference between a postal service and VOD. With VOD you can atch what film you want when you want rather then planning in advance or whatever comes thorugh your letterbox that is in your queue.

the postal thing often takes the argument out of what we will watch anyhow lol plus every film that comes is something we want and soon will all be in lovely 1080p ;) if i haven't had time to plan a video night then in any case there are plenty of films on tv every night now for free |
Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
They do need it like netflix and then it would be a winner.

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
Its designed for the "I can't be arsed" brigade. The ones that slob on the sofa all day and curl their top lip at the thought of "all that effort" in signing up to a dvd rental film service.
The one off "lets watch a film tonight Darlin'". Never realizing their 'Inspired Spontaneity' comes back to bite them in the bum at the end of the month. So many couch potatoes,so much depression,so much profit to make off them ! |
Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
They are doing Twilight: New Moon for £1 on the new movies service

Re: Virgin Media launches first online movies service
I Like the idea of On demand media but in all honesty we all know it cant take off in this day and age with Illegal File sharing and what not. Although I do prefer this kind of thing instead of having physical media that for instance you could damage during the rental period. 3.99 aint at all bad either considering Blockbuster's 'credit crunching' prices.
All in all its a service that wont generate all too much, Then again I do rent movies from xbox live with microsoft points :dunce: |
