Happy Saint George's Day

OK, so he was born in Palestine, never came to England, & probably didn't kill any dragons... but he's still the Patron Saint of England & my fellow English CF members :)

So Happy Saint George's Day :)

Err never did understand this day last time I tried to do anything for the day I got informed that I was a racist for doing so...hey ho.

Might have a pint to celebrate this once great nation.

I shall be having a few pints and a bite to eat tonight at one of the local pubs, they've got a St George's day beer festival.

According to a friend of mine, he is also Patron Saint of - Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Germany and Greece. He's also the Patron Saint of the Scout movement, soldiers, archers, cavalrymen and chivarly, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers, and helps those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphillis!

well that just about sums us English up!:)

No wonder many are too afraid to celebrate our national day :afire:

I was listening to Jeremy Vine on the radio. I think some people are too afraid
to celebrate our national day through fear of offending others.

haven't seen many flags though.

I can't see how any one or nationality in the country can be offended by our national emblem. I went to Scotland and was quite envious of the way they are proud to fly their flag. And I expect that's the same in any country.... Apart from England that is.

If anyone oppose the England flag then they should be sent packing imo.

I think it's more to do with you're bringing the flag out on an occasion. and is probably seen as you're making a statement.
I think if we were to fly the flag all year through, then it wouldn't be seen as being so 'offensive' because they** would be used to seeing it.

They is all people of all races and religion. not one particular group FW.

Leeds Civic Hall were flying the Union Jack and the flag of St George yesterday, when I passed by, and again today.

I was only saying the other day how pleased i was to see all those Scottish Satires back in the sky now that the planes were up there criss crossing each others paths again. I`ve lived in London for over 10 years now so i`m always happy to see the Scottish Flag.....or even something that resembles the Scottish Flag.:)

As Scottish as i might be though i still root for England, or indeed any other home nation, when they play football, rugby & cricket etc...unless they were playing us lot of course, which is a rarity now-a-days anyway.
I actually love the English but it`s not as if i have a choice, two of my children were born down here.:D

If you attempt to tie British with British National Party then people will be offended. Not only because they are an affront to our country, but also because a lot of people are not considered British by them simply because of the colour of their skin.

No that's not it at all. Imo not celebrating is a very English thing to do, we just aren't interested in having a special day all of our very own, we'll leave that to the little nations with inferiority complexes.

You appear to be confusing the lack of ability to read a calendar with secrecy....;)

btw, St George is the patron saint of England (and many other countries/cities), not of Great Britain.

Happy St. George's Day.

Re: Happy Saint George's Day

Point of information.

St George's Day is the 2nd of May in the Church calendar this year, as the normal date clashes with Easter.

The reason is that the Saturday between Christ's crucifixion and resurrection is a day of mourning and so cannot also be a feast day for a saint.

Ridiculous. changing a date because something else clashes with it.
they'll look a bit odd celebrating it 2 weeks after everybody else.

Seeing as very few people will actually be feasting for the saint, and even fewer will be praying at him and hoping for his intervention in some crisis or other, I think that point of information is slightly moot. ;)

Still, how typically English to have a patron saint's day that's subject to delay or cancellation. :D

Now ... who thinks I should wrap myself in the flag and then go for a celebratory pint somewhere down Sauchiehall Street? :erm: :D
