You know I have been playing around with Ubuntu for a while and I still don't know how to update simple things like Transmission or Firefox.....is there a special way to do it?

Also how do you go about getting codec packs?

Generally in ubuntu the main system updater tends to handle updates to all software.
Click on System, Administration, Update manager
When it launches it will tell you what updates are available. Click on Install updates then enter your password when asked.
It's as simple as that. Think of it as windows update on steroids.

Ok, this one is a little harder, there is a nice howto on it Here and the most you will be doing really to install them is copy and paste into a terminal.

While you are at it, if you wish to be able to edit video then type in the following into a terminal window.

sudo apt-get install kdenlive

follow the instructions on screen and you will have a video editing package the equal of Sony Vegas.

Hope this helps.

You can can skirt round the issue by using VLC.

http://www.howtoforge.com/howtos/linux/ubuntu

has good guides, the perfect desktop guides especially to get a quick guide to something useful.

come on Richard you know full well trying to tie a whole subject with multiple problems to one thread is not going to work. Its gonna get messy. Also there are loads of people on here know their way around nix of various flavours( I am not one of them)

The existing forum method where a problem is posted in relevent section then answered by whoever seems to work fine.

Its like me starting a thread saying I work in computers any problems just ask me ....

Its good to know you are here and can offer proffessional support on the matter though :)

I'm not sure from the OPs post, but one thing to remember is that the version of the software in the Ubuntu repositores will typically be older (more tested with Ubuntu) than the latest and greatest out there.

If you want/need new versions of the software though, most popular software sites will run their own PPAs with newer versions you can add as a software source and manage the same way through Synaptic and the update manager.

As an example for Flash:
Go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager
Search for "flashplugin", it should ask you if you want to enable non-open source packages. Click yes.

If you can't click videos in Youtube etc after installing Flash, read this:
http://heratech.net/blog/sham/cant-c...ube-etc-ubuntu

If you want a plugin for mp3s and so on, you can simply try playing the file in Videolan or you can look for the "plugins-nonfree" package in Synaptic.

For Firefox and other software, Ubuntu should provide security updates for your version but if you want Firefox directly from Mozilla (3.6), then look at this:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-ins...buntu-ppa.html

Transmission gets updated very frequently. The current version is 1.92.
The Ubuntu repositories are sometimes slow to get the updates.
The way to overcome this is to add the Transmission PPA.
If you do this the Ubuntu updater looks in Transmission's repo for the latest version. There's quite a few other packages allow you to do this too.
This is information about the Transmission PPA here:-https://launchpad.net/~transmissionbt/+archive/ppa

Edit. This is pretty much what brundles said in post #6 :dozey:

This topic is great thanks to everyone for the advice :D Had fun googling all your tips :D

I ran the command "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras" and that seemed to get the codecs I was missing.....is that the right thing to do?

What are ppa's and which ones should be on my system?

I managed to update firefox to the daily updates so it seems to be better for me :D

Now all I need is a good cd-ripper, version alternative to winrar and a decent iTunes alternative (just for my iPod) and I will be happy to swicth :D

Try Ripper-X for CDs, it's excellent.

Since a few weeks ago ,I have struggled with wireless on my Acer Aspire one A0A150.
I now cannot connect to my WPA encrypted linksys.
I know its not the linksys as my iphone and windows machine connect.
(and my wifes Dell ubuntu netbook)
I have installed a clean ubuntu 9.10 (and 10.04 beta) and can only connect when encryption is switched off.
I have tried mad wifi drivers but im still struggling, I have asked on the ubuntu forums but so far not had a response..

I think it must be one of the kernel updates but im not sure how to go back and find older kernels..

Im back to using windows now (which I dont mind) but i like ubuntu and was happy with it...

If anyone can help I would appreciate it....

Although i`ve never had problems with Gnomes network manager since the static ip debacle 2 or 3 versions back i still prefer to use wicd on the laptops. We all use it here on our laptops & netbooks in fact. Perhaps you could have tried that instead.
I still actually use the /etc/network/interfaces file for the 2 network cards on my Desktop. A throwback to the static ip issue and of course the lack of issues with the 2 or 3 upgrades the Desktops went through since then.

Possibly a silly question but have you tried the obvious step of removing of the external drive and rebooting?
When you say it crashed though what exactly happened? Did it just freeze the whole Desktop when you connected the external drive or did it give some kind of error message about not being able to mount the thing?
we`ve got umpteen external drives here for one thing or another but we`ve never had any problems with any of them on *buntu. In fact, i just plug any 2.5" Sata drive into one or two external enclosures i use just for that job.

to add to the above about external hard drive, what file system is it? If it's Fat or NTFS you may need to boot to a MS OS and then do a chkdsk on it.

.

Thanks for the reply!.

Yeah I have tried WICD and static addresses, the thing is whenever i speicfy a static address IFCONFIG shows said address with netmask and gw but I cannot ping my router or an address on the net, I have checked DNS but since I cant ping my router internally then dns is not the issue.
IWCONFIG shows my association with the router as well.

I even added a route but for some reason it still fails...

I'm going to re-install it again tonight so I have a clean slate to work from but any other ideas are welcome, since it must be something I have missed

At the time the screen just froze and I had to hold the power button to force it to shut down and I then removed the drive and restarted the pc, tried again and it just went to the grub screen.

NTFS which had just been error checked in windows7 and was fine. I was going to use it in ubuntu as an external drive for that

Oh well, hopefully that will clear things up for you.
I would have asked if the machine works fine with a wired connection or if you had another router you could try it with. Certainly seems strange but after the few months i`ve had with Routers nothing would surprise me.

My own router issues these last few months were nothing to do with security or connecting and more to do with them just dying completely.
One of our own and one of Virgins i`ve had die on me this year. Better yet was the the new Dlink Virgin sent me a week or so ago being completely dead when it arrived.....even with a replacement power supply. I would have sworn there was some kind router curse put on me at that point, if i was that way inclined..:)
That Dlink asides though i had thought my lads PS3 was causing the problems we first started having but it turned out that the 2 Routers in question were on their way out regardless. Everythings fine now of course and i even have a new Netgear from Virgin lying there if i ever need it. Now plugging that power supply unit in for the first time was far more interesting than it should have been. :erm:

Just get yourself a USB stick, a copy of Unetbootin and just find the distro that works best on that machine. You could try Lucid if you want to stick with the *buntu setup. It`s obviously not out for a couple of weeks yet but i`ve never let that stop me. :)

Is it the actual Grub screen it`s now sticking(?) at, the one with the available boot options or is it a prompt of some sort? If you do have a prompt you can type at what does it say? it might be your username or "grub-rescue>" or just "grub>" even.

It could be the grub that`s corrupt although that usually spits back some kind of error at you....re-installing it might help but that`s a little more convoluted with Grub2 nowadays than it used to be with the original Grub re-installation.
The User Errors section in here explains how though.
Not something i`ve ever had to do thankfully....yet anyway.

Perhaps the Grandmaster approach might have proved even quicker by now, if you didn`t have tooo much to back up of course.. ;)

2 strange seeming problems guys but mabey the OP or someone might be able to help were i obviously cant.

I gave up trying to fix it and re-installed and it seems to be running fine this time.

The external drive is working too but only if I plug it in after ubuntu has loaded up.

That could be your bios trying to boot from that device first.

I tried WICD again last night but still Zip....Still no answer/help from ubuntu forums either.:(
Is it me or does there seem to be endless why did you leave windows polls. or why is windows so bad polls etc

Ah well,

Ill go on a Ath5k quest I think and see if its that although im not holding my breath.

I usually dont have much need for the NTFS filesystem round here so most of our external drives are all formatted with either ext3/4... with the odd Fat32/WBFS flung in for good measure.
Even the ones i do use for the computers are usually just plugged in as and when needed. I do have bootable usb/flash drives but i`ve never installed anything to an external usb/sata drive that required it plugged in at boot time.

If your desperate to have it mounted at bootup though you could try sticking an entry for it in your fstab.
The "Mounting NTFS Partitions (with read/write privileges)" section in the 9.10 guide will explain how.

Probably another silly question but i`ve made the oversight myself with WICD......when your trying to connect with it are you first making sure that whatever your wireless card is listed in ifconfig as is also what it`s listed in WICD`s preferences as.

Your right about the UF poll thing btw, the young bucks over there especially...they love a bit of hating to themselves.
Good luck with your next quest regardless.
You could always admit defeat and just stick Windows on the thing.. :p:

Defeat.....NEVER... well almost never...

WICD can see the card and shows me the network but just refuses to connect like gnome manger.

Try restarting the network manager:

sudo restart network-manager

It plays up from time to time with me too and a restart fixes it.

You`ve probably covered many of the steps in there already but you should also take a look through the WifiDocsWirelessTroubleShootingGuide. Paying particular attention to section 4.4 if your still not able to connect to the router at all.

I dont do much CD ripping myself or indeed music production but the CD ripping has has plenty of native methods without ever having to pop back into Windows and as far as Adobe Audition is concerned, well, you might find some usable advice regarding the use of Audacity & Ardour in this somewhat older UF thread.

SoundJuicer is the default CD ripper that comes with Ubuntu.
It does a reasonable job.

RubyRipper is better though. It's Linux's next best thing to EAC.
There's a tutorial here how to install it:-http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ght=RubyRipper
As my screenshot shows, you can rip as flac, mp3 etc and can set the options of the encoders. It's also possible to use other encoders such as NeroAac etc.

It certainly used to be but it no longer comes as part of the Default installation, basically because of Rhythmbox having the same abilities.

ctrl-ins copy
shift-ins paste
shift-del cut

they're the older copy/cut/paste commands, but are still in use in Unix/Linux/MS Windows

that doesn't really answer your question, make sure your keyboard is mapped to correct territory. You'd probably know though if that was teh case, as certain other shortcuts woudl be different, or shift and keys would be different. eg US keyboard shift 2 is @ etc

Another way you can copy and paste is highlight text as normal, and middle click to paste.

I generally just highlight with the left mouse button and then the middle click/wheel alone alone does the pasting......unless your one of those terminal using keyboard warriors of course. ;)
Code:

ctrl-insert : copy

shift-insert : paste

shift-delete : cut

Sooo i followed http://dimitar.me/madwifi-drivers-fo...-29-and-above/

And got nothing, would not see any wireless at all.
So i closed the netbook and left it and I have'nt used it until today.

I was in another location and noticed that I could see some access points again.
I just got home 2 mins ago turned on the netbook and BAM wireless access!!!!

Excellent :D:D:D:D

Im well happy but im really tempted to wipe it and see if it was a fluke.
Hmmmmmm decisions!

<---- Oooooh my 1,000th post excellent :)

---------- Post added at 21:21 ---------- Previous post was at 20:24 ----------

for those that are interested I performed this on a blank install.
I ran the updates and this broke wireless completely.

I had to run sudo make and sudo make install again from the madwifi directory i downloaded.

Then sudo modprobe ath_pci

I have'nt restarted yet that comes in a minute, wish me luck.

---------- Post added at 21:25 ---------- Previous post was at 21:21 ----------

Excellent, I have restarted and it still works .... :D:D:D:D:D

You lose the contents of the clipboard once you close the app you copied from.
It's a security feature.

As the new Ubuntu is out in a few days am I better off re-installing the whole thing or would it be ok to just update to the new version?

Id say update.
Unless of course you have very little installed/saved then id be tempted to go for a fresh install.

But myself I would wait a while before doing any.

I`d also go for the in house upgrade. If you dont mind doing the completely fresh installation then there`s no harm in trying the upgrade first.

If you use a separate /home partition then the upgrade is always a little less hassle data wise when doing a fresh installation. Backing anything up first shouldn`t be too much of a hassle either of course, if it aint backed up already that is....ahem.:)
If you`ve installed a whole heap of stuff from synaptic, which you`d like to restore after any fresh installation, then you can just save a text file with a list of all installed apps for re-installation on the new setup.

Code:

dpkg --get-selections > my_installed_apps
Will save a file called "my_installed_apps" in your home directory and after you copy it to your new installations home directory...

Code:

cat my_installed_apps | sudo dpkg --set-selections && sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade
...Will restore them all again, the ones needing restored anyway.
You should be able to do the same thing with Synaptic of course....

Synaptic: File >>> Save Markings As. Be sure to tick the "Save full state, not only changes" in the lower left......To restore, Read Markings.
Unless you`ve been on a mad one and installed half the stuff in the repositories then it shouldn`t really be an issue of course.:)

It`s how i`ve usually done it. Make sure you install any current updates first though, before proceeding with the full system upgrade. Also, if you`ve added any third party repo`s/ppa`s along the way then it might be an idea to remove them first, just for the time being at least.
I`ve seen many people spend days and weeks trying to resolve upgrade issues were the problems have usually been caused by the umpteen third party repo`s they had added.

xpod 27-04-2010 23:49

Re: Ubuntu Linux help in >> this thread <<

2 Attachment(s)
It`s obviously been a while since i had any third party repo`s added ....:dozey:

Attachment 20053

I`m actually on a Desktop up at our flat just now(i`m re-decorating it...honest) which i`ve not even used since it was upgraded to 9.10.

Also plenty unsupported stuff now of course.
Attachment 20054

15 min`s to go still although there`s a USB stick handy, just in case.
I aint messing around with this thing. A clean install from USB would have probably been quicker in fact but no harm in doing the upgrade just to see.

EDIT:
Ok. so it was 15 minutes for the 1600 odd packages to download......and 2 hours for the upgrade itself to complete. :-)
This is on an old P4(ht) with 768MB of memory. My Desktop down at the house does an upgrade in less than hour usually although to be honest i cant remember the last time i sat watching an upgrade. I`ve often just started them off when i`m going to bed/work/whatever.
A clean install from usb, with updates, driveR, currently installed apps and of course any personal preferences would take about 30 minutes. Even installing from cd wouldn`t be too much longer.

It`s neither here nor there to me to be honest. This `ll be the LTS final in a day or two either way.

The sensible thing to do is obviously wait for the final release, and possibly another week or two on top if you need the machine in question working properly and dont want to risk possible issues.

Well i dont know how well your Broadcom will fair with any upgrade but it seems to have went just fine on this thing.

Only problem after reboot so far has been that damn button position change to the left. That`s not for me. For anyone interested the command below changes them back over to the right, or you can do it with gconf-editor.

Code:

gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string menu:minimize,maximize,close
The Ubuntu upgrade seems to have gone better than my decorating has if nothing else.....at least the upgrade is finished.

Well, there are two broadcom drivers for the BCM24xx cards (BCM2412) and I chose the wrong one didn't I.

I have better cards around, but the laptop is a HP, and if the card isn't HP Certified it comes up with an error 174 and refuses to boot.

On /home, what I do is have it on a separate partition then name the home directory after the version of Linux used. I am a SUSE man so my /home contains

tweetiepooh.110
tweetiepooh.111
tweetiepooh.112

Once things are stable I can copy files into the new home as needed though my tendency is to have a separate /data partition for documents, photos etc and use home for config files.

I make sure that accounts are created with the same UID and groups to ease permissions.

I`m sure those who actually use *buntu, and a few who dont, will already know but the LTS Final release was initially delayed due to a problem with other operating systems not appearing in the menu at bootup.

Good to go now though it seems.

I reinstalled Ubuntu and the keyboard seems to work now, however, I have another problem:

I have installed it on VMWare and my keyboard seems to work (relating to an earlier post), but when Ubunutu loads, it is hanging saying

VMWare Easy Install. Please Wait! VMWare is currently beign installed on your system. Depending on the version of Ubunutu you are installing, you may log in below and use the system during the installation. Otherwise, please wait for the graphical environment to launch. Thank you.
It allows me to log into the Ubuntu installation using the command line.

I tried this yesterday, and waited for a couple of hours, and it did nothing.

Right click and Extract Here?

You could also install the package "unrar" .. search Synaptic for "rar".

What exactly happens when you right click & "extract here" or what happens if you just double click on the first .rar file? Does the archive manager open at all? Does it display the contents on said .rar if it does open & can you not drag & drop the files directly from the archive manager if it is displaying the contents?
Did you try Richard M`s advice about installing the unrar package?

Just wondering if someone could explain ppa's again as I just can't get it.

Are they what you need to automatically update programs to new/beta versions of software or are they something else?

Also how do I go about updating Amarok as I have no idea how.

The Personal Package Archive service is a part of launchpad that basically allows you to distribute software directly to the users, which they can then download & try at their own risk after adding the relevant ppa to their sources list.

Assuming Ubuntu 10.04.....If you installed 2.3.0 from the package manager you`ll obviously get updates as & when they come down but if you`re a little less patient and cant wait for some CoverBling then you could go download the Dark Star from the Amarok site i suppose.
I dont actually use Amarok myself but i think i`ve seen more people wanting to know how to downgrade it back to the 1.4* builds because they`re not too happy with the complete rewrite it had.:erm:

Regardless of how you installed it though you should still be able to remove it by opening Synaptic and looking in there for it. Try pressing the origin button, then looking in Local, local/main and Local/non-free for anything you`ve installed from outside the repo`s.
If you added any third party repo/ppa to install Amarok
from then removing that from your software sources list then reloading everything before installing the version that`s actually in the repositories is the way to go.

Just a plain old "sudo apt-get install amarok" on it`s own would install the version from the repo`s so unless you`d did some other configuring beforehand...like adding some third party repositry.....you may already have what your looking for. You can easily check what version of amarok your using with....
Code:

dpkg -l | grep amarok
Or check in Synaptic. ;)

The only UbuntuGeek/Amarok guide i can find is this guide here ......which is a actually a guide to install a fork of the no longer supported 1.4. Just as i had mentioned people were doing earlier strangely enough.

Exe`s are Windows Executables and you cant use them in Linux, not unless you have wine installed and even then that`s a bit hit and miss.

Looking at the actual download page only now i can see what you mean.
Unless you wanted to download the source and compile it yourself, along with installing all the KDE dependencies Amarok will need i`d just use the supported version for now.

Good call. There`s rarely any need for most users to be installing from outside the repositories, especially stuff that`s already in there.

Read the security sticky over on Ubuntu forums. It should give you a better understanding of things to help you decide whether you might want/need AV or not.
Personally i`ve never used it and indeed never needed it in the nigh on 4 years i`ve now used *buntu/Linux in one form or another.

Some other good practices you might like to consider.

1: Not messing about with any of the default settings with regard to networking and not opening all manner of ports to the outside world for the likes of vnc/ssh etc, not without learning how to secure them properly anyway.

2: Use strong passwords for all users.

3: Don't install software from untrusted sources.

4: Use the NoScript extension in Firefox.

5: Back up regularly

6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 Don't be dumb. You only have to visit the security section of UF to see dumb people getting themselves hacked left, right & centre.;)

Thanks very much for the excellent advice, i will take a look at the link although i could enter the world's most cautious and vigilant internet user competition lol, it will only take me a few days to get out feeling 'insecure' in linux but that's just coming from using windows since the dinosaurs.

Thanks again :)

There are just so many ways of backing up that i probably dont even know half the available options myself.....Although i`ve messed about with many of the more interesting methods i now generally just plug something in and copy it over. :)
A good place to start though, as ever, would be the BackupYourSystem guide for Ubuntu.

Full drive imaging is probably one of the best methods for full system backups that can be easily restored(just using virtual machines is good for that too) but if you want continual daily backs ups then something like rsync might be better.
The guide above probably links to most of the best options but here`s another couple of handy links.

http://www.clonezilla.org/
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/rsync

Personally i just keep copies of important stuff on otherwise unused external drives and dvd`s but i also run an NFS server which everybody in the house can copy their own important stuff onto for safe keeping. ...which is handy as far as the kids are concerned. It`s also our local movie/muisic/game repo so everything like that is in one central location.

Depends what file system you have it formatted with. ;)

Well, i`m sure you`ve probably figured it out for yourself by now but i think the absolute best way to deal with any Fat/ntfs type file systems would be to use Windows/Scandisk(?) but you can certainly try something like dosfsck in Ubuntu

So, for example..
With your external drive plugged in run...
Code:

sudo fdisk -l
That will tell you the location of your external drive/partitions...
Make sure the drive/partition you want to check is unmounted then run something like...
Code:

sudo dosfsck -a -w -v /dev/sdb1
Replacing "/dev/sdb1" with the location of your own drive.

There may well be better ways but i generally dont have much need for repairing Windows filesystems in Linux and even if/when i do i can easily do it in one of the Windows installations/vm`s we do have around.

EDIT: You can actually just use "fsck" on it`s own, without the "dos" part of the command.
ie...
Code:

sudo fsck -a -w -v /dev/sdb1

I ended up checking it through one of the right click options in ubuntu 10 and then I followed your way for extra measures :)

It found 5 bad sectors in ubuntu so then I tried windows 7 and it said it had bad sectors so I guess the external drive is humped.

Thanks for the help as always xpod :)

What right click option did you use to run a file system check??
I know you can just use the disk utility(totally forgot about that myself) in your system/admin menu but the only option i have for messing about with disks via my right click menu on the default Ubuntu is the format option.

Was through the format option.

Right click -> Format -> Disk Utility -> Check File System
