Virgin Media in the local news!

Another bit of bad news for Virgin Media, looks like they need to be more careful with their use of mailing lists!

Why did he think the letter was for him? Did he ask any of the guys staying in his loft. ;)

Yup it really is awful. Business just as usual. Nothing ever changes. ;)

Not much you can about it if this is indeed the case:

"The marketing database we used was purchased from a third party.

"We are in contact with that third party to investigate this error, which we take very seriously.
I doubt if any company would hand check all entries on a purchased data base.

This is the worse thing that could happen to anybody.

I used to worry about the small things in life like :- Cancer, heart disease, motor accidents, being murdered etc.

It's reading stories like this that make you wonder if life is really worth all the pain and suffering this man has had to endure. Arthur, Notts Report abuse commented on 19-Mar-2010 15:41

Nothing much changed I guess.

I remember an occasion that one the ntl Headend's received a threat to cut off service for an unpaid bill. (I believe it was not the first time)

The letter was addressed to Mr Headend

And it started off 'Dear Mr Headend'

Cabletel, ntl, virgin, call them whatever but they have always been consistently incompetent.

That's a bad incident - very bad, but it needs pointing out that the data came from a third party, according to VM.

I dont see the big deal. Much ado about nothing to me. If it happened to me Id find it funny, ring them to let them know, have a laugh about it and leave it there. Some people have either have too much time on their hands or just crave attention. Mistakes happen.

Quite agree.

I also agree with the comment that if the mail wasn't addressed to him, he shouldn't have even opened it.

I don't see why people are saying that VM are incompetant, when the error clearly wasn't theirs? Some people just like to blame them for whatever, simple as.

If someone at at a company had intentionally put "Mr Illegal Immigrant" for a laugh. the last thing you would admit to is that it was somebody in that company. and the first thing you would do is blame it on an outside source.

At one time I would have agreed with you.

However I once mistakenly opened a letter that was correctly adressed to my house but as I later found, to a person who I didn't know and to the best of my knowledge had never resided at said address.

From the contents of the letter and information obtained from subsequent phonecalls I learned that someone had used my address to obtain credit and a mobile phone contract. As I heard no more on the subject following my initial calls, it seems the matter was nipped in the bud.

In conclusion I think if a letter is addressed to your premises but to an person unknown you should open it a.) for your own protection
and/or b.) to discover the sender so you can inform them their information is in error and so prevent further communications on the subject being made.

They r useless with their mailing database. My parents STILL get letters for me almost 5 years after moving out and i have rang them 4 times and 4 times they claim to have removed my name from the database.

Or just put "return to sender, not at this address" on the envelope and stick it back in the postbox so you don't commit a crime.
