New GFX Card

Hi,

I'm looking for a new gfx card, but I'm a few generations behind, currently on a GeForce 8800GTS 640mb, could I get some advice please on what to look at, my budget is £200 or (ideally much) less please.

Ati 5830 :) if you want to spend less go for the 5770

Re: New GFX Card

All the 5850s seem to be about £250, this seem good to you, my current card is an XFX and it's been sturdy

I edited my post down due to budget :)

the 5770 perform on par with the 4870 (which I have and plays everything) and of course has DX11

Re: New GFX Card

Wait till next month as nvidia release there new cards at the end of the month so see how they compare then make your choice, but of the ati cards I would go for a 5850 or 5870 for the extra performance over current dx10 cards.

Well I know that if they are released this month then dependant on how they perform I am either going for 2 of them or 2 of the 5870's.

Re: New GFX Card

I know Nividia were touting March for release last year but last thing I read ( not really been looking though) Nividia were having trouble with the process and were having a lot failing. Have you got links to new articles with release date?

Fermi on paper looks very impressive and will be great cards but one things for sure those worth owning wont be cheap.

Damien are you still outputting to that 768:1368 tv? you could buy a proper HD tv for the price of your second card I am sure lol

If I'm gonna get one, I'm gonna go for that XFX 5770 XXX Edition I reckon

When I built my brother in laws pc I got the vapourx 5770 for him and they are good cards he can play all games and do Photoshop etc so he is happy with it.

Zing
I am still outputting at the low res of 1366x768 for now but with my new job I will, be able to go out and buy them at the end of this month and then a new tv at the end of next month which, will either 40 or 42 inch and full HD which I cannot wait for. :D :D

I have been keeping an eager eye on the net about nvidia's cards (checking each day), and according to everywhere I have seen nvidia are releasing them on the 26th of this month under the names gtx470/480, but according to sites they mainly outperform the ati cards when heavy tesselation is involved.

zing_deleted 11-03-2010 14:20

Re: New GFX Card

I fully expect them to out perform ATI make no mistake. I doubt they will be affordable for me anyway. I will stick with my 4870 till the games push it enough to merrit the upgrade and cost involved

Do you not think it would be wise to at least wait for the drivers to mature a little? and to allow the card to settle into the market?

Is that card a good enough upgrade from a 8800gt (OC) with a screen res of 1680x1050. Just asking as some games now are getting slightly choppy at this res, so I'm also on the look out. The rest of my rig is fine, 8gb ram, Q9550, the usuals etc.

another point dude and I think its a valid one . Do you not think it a wise move to actually buy the TV first. So you have the screen with the resolution then if 1 gfx works at max then you have saved hundreds of pounds?

Well i'm gonna look at it all at the end of the month

I'm coming from a 8800GTSCO by XFX and it looks like it, there is a chap who has posted a comment on the model I have chosen saying it was a very good upgrade from a 9600 there is only 1 poor comment but I'm guessing that was more to do with his PC setup or maybe that he didn't remove the Nvidia drivers properly before changing to an ATI. I will let you know my findings tomorrow hopefully :)

Saving money, and computer kit cannot be placed in the same sentence if Damien is involved ;)

I know but do you not agree that common sense would push towards getting the screen first then try one card then if you still dont get twice as many frames per second than the eye can see get a second lol lol

What you and I might think as being the sensible approach doesn't come into it. But we're a bit :notopic: since this is about Graham's GFX needs ;)

which mouse did you go for and keyboard?

i have the coolermaster storm mouse iirc and it is a great mouse goes up to 5200dpi and responds very well, with a logitech g11 keyboard which is also very good.

Re: New GFX Card

Ive got an MX600 on its way off Ebay cost me <£13 lol I know its gonna be ok as I bought an LX7 for £9.13 lol I like the wireless laser mice there is no lag in gaming at all and the DPI is plenty high enough for me

Graham M 12-03-2010 15:44

Re: New GFX Card

New graphics card is here and it's simply amazing, tried out Bioshock 2 and it's now seamlessly smooth where it was choppy on top settings before, Dalaran (to the WoW players) is now very smooth indeed, at a reasonable 25-30fps.

As for the keyboard, I am typing on it now and it is very comfortable indeed, I still haven't gotten used to the programmable keys being on the far left and keep hitting the bottom left one when I'm going for control but I'll get used to it, it's comfortable to use and seems very ergonomic and each key going down gives a reassuring click to know you've pressed it, great quality keyboard!

And the mouse, well Zing I have an MX Revolution Laser mouse and when I first got it it was very good for games, etc. Now I've had it maybe 18 months and it's definitely coming to the end of its life, it started having a quirky problem some months ago where it would respond to every single click as a double-click and got quite annoying and tiresome, I was almost going to bin it at one point but it sorted itself out, anyway, now it feels a bit sluggish and gets a bit irritating in games, so I thought I'd get myself a decent wired mouse as well just in case I feel the urge to fling the Revolution out of the window! :)

So yeah, it's been a good day :)

Re: New GFX Card

Zeph, you still have a warranty on the mouse.... so just see if Logitech want to RMA it for ya ;)

at the moment I'm gaming with a Logitech Media 600 Keyboard and a M705 wireless mouse (see link on the mouse) which is pretty nice (have had it since xmas and battery is still going to last for another 3 years) just had to get used to it after 4 years on a G5.

Re: New GFX Card

Not got the PoP for the mouse anymore though :( Actually very happy with the MX518 first time I've had a wired mouse in maybe 7 years

Re: New GFX Card

Graham M ive got the G11 and have had it over a year and i STILL forget the programable keys are on the left, many a time i wanted to copy or paste somethign only to open outlook again :(

and the 5770 seems spot on which is good considering im planning on buying on next week :)

peanut 27-05-2010 10:58

Re: New GFX Card

I'm sorry to bring this up again, but I'm lost on what to buy as an upgrade for a 8800gt OC.

I have a Q9550, only a 550w PSU, 8gb ram and at the mo the 8800gt oc still run most things on high settings at 1680x1050.

So I've looked at the 5850 toxic (£280+) and the 5770 Vapour (£150). Now I don't play many games but I do like to have things on high settings. Is it worth going all out and paying close to £300 or will the 5770 (or any recommendations) will show a marked increase in gaming.

Any help is appreciated.

zing_deleted 27-05-2010 11:40

Re: New GFX Card

the 5770 is about as good as a 4870 with the added bonus of hardware DX11 and should be adequate ,however if you can afford the 5850 just do it ;)

---------- Post added at 11:39 ---------- Previous post was at 11:38 ----------

however why the Toxic you can save a pretty penny opting for a stock card

I know not in stock yet but it will be

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-X...ns-vs-Predator if you gonna spend 280 spend the extra and buy a 5870

peanut 27-05-2010 11:58

Re: New GFX Card

Cheers Zing, I think I'll go with a stock XFX 5850, which is about £100 less than a 5870 which won't fit in my tower by 1cm anyway. (Typical) (hacksaw maybe).

Is there much difference from a Sapphire version and the XFX? Seems to be about £20-30.
