50MB Questions
Hi all,
First post so go easy...... Had my BB upgraded to the 50MB on Saturday &.......the engineer was unable to complete it properly, got as far as the modem going in but when he phoned VM there was something called the "hits" was down???? Anyway he said I'd receive a call within 2 hrs, I didnt, had to call them and the chap managed to get me up and running; but... Did my first test and was 47 DL 0.65UL 10m/s ping After this one it steadily went down and down to sit around the 12 to 20 mark now. Not had time yet to install the "N" router yet so I've run straight to the modem as they said my TP link is not compatible, lol I'll check once its all up and running. So I called again to tell them Im not happy with the speed of 20 or less, and I have an engineer booked for Tuesday morning. Is there anything I need to ensure he does before he leaves, not that I'd tell him his job I just want it right before he goes. |

Maybe if broadbandings views this he can add some input. ---------------------------- Try this speed test below Here is how the speedtest works below. click on these 2 gamefiles battlefield_2142_demo.exe and bfme2demo_english_final.exe and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running add them together then multiply them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed. Remember to stop and delete the files. i.e : 250Kbps X 8 = 2Mbps, 500Kbps X 8 = 4Mbps, 1250Kbps X 8 = 10Mbps, 2500Kbps X 8 = 20Mbps Then add 10% to the final figure to account for any processes running on your computer. http://www.virginmedia.com/testmyspeed/manual.php |
Re: 50MB Questions
Thanks,
I ran that test yesterday and this morning and still come out with around 20 |

Are you wireless or direct connection. |
Re: 50MB Questions
Both,
From my wireless laptop or wired desktop which I have tried straight in to the modem and still get the same result |
Re: 50MB Questions
Rather an odd one then as the power levels appear to be spot on, so we will have to see what the engineer says on Tuesday.
Remember to post back the results of his findings. |
Re: 50MB Questions
Sure thing, keep you posted thanks for your help.

Re: 50MB Questions
Try the gamefiles above as your upload is fine and even that 40Mb is within specification.
Could be the router if the speeds drop by half when running through it. Your power levels are perfect just check this sticky out and you will find a familiar avatar on the post.:D CLICK HERE |

Re: 50MB Questions
From 10 tests on speedtest i have:-
the ping is always 10m/s and the UL is always 1.60 but the DL goes from 41 to 26 up and down. And I am now connected direct to the modem, with none of my equipment fitted. https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/01/36.png https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/01/37.png |
Re: 50MB Questions
The may be an issue with the external cabling or something in the cabinet at the end of the road.
Bit of an odd one and I would have booked an engineer as well so right decision there. |
Re: 50MB Questions
Ok thank you very much.
What's an acceptable speed though, I know with ADSL you never get what you pay for but my 10MB use to run around 8.5 - 9.8 most of the time, unless throttled! |

Playing about with speedtest.net and this is weird, since I didnt think my TP Link router was compatible,
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/01/32.png It wont maintain this speed though, and its now connected via the router Im getting no less than 36, still not right though me thinks. |
Re: 50MB Questions
Hi Moldova,
Thanks for your help the other day, here is whats happened today, Waited in for the guy to come, 2pm for an 8 til 12 appointment, bad start since I have lost an entire day from work. All he did was run a TCP optimizer which does not seem to have done anything, Best he could get on the Vmpilot site was 23 and you can see below what Im now getting on speedtest.net https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/01/23.png https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/01/24.png https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/01/25.png https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2010/01/26.png He had a story that there is a problem in Withington, Manchester and I live in Stockport about 6 miles away. Apprently this invloves a person from Motorolla flying from Seattle to fix this.......sorry but I feel a little let down since he said there is no time scale on when this would be fixed. Call back in 2 weeks........Ok, shall I not pay for it for the 3 weeks of bad service if it stays this way? Sorry I'll add this too if it helps, Cable Modem Downstream DS-1 DS-2 DS-3 DS-4 Frequency 298750000 306750000 314750000 322750000 Lock Status (QAM Lock/FEC Sync/MPEG Lock) Y/Y/Y Y/Y/Y Y/Y/Y Y/Y/Y Channel Id 9 10 11 12 Modulation 256QAM 256QAM 256QAM 256QAM Symbol Rate (Msym/sec) 6.952 6.952 6.952 6.952 Interleave Depth I=12 J=17 I=12 J=17 I=12 J=17 I=12 J=17 Power Level (dBmV) -0.45 -0.71 -0.77 -0.19 RxMER (dB) 36.39 36.17 36.17 36.61 Correctable Codewords 10 6 12 3 Uncorrectable Codewords 287 269 262 252 |
Re: 50MB Questions
eeeek..oh and Hi all :)
I am thinking of returning to VM as I can only get 5meg on my adsl due to the line quality, even though I am within 1 mile of my exchange and can get adsl+ but thats another story. As I have said I am thinking of returning to VM, have been thinking about it for some time since they offered the 50meg service in my area of Winnersh Triangle. After reading this story, is this a good idea? Anyone else in the same area as me willing to share experiences? Good luck Dex, but if I were you I would refuse to pay. |
Re: 50MB Questions
Yep its frustrating alright, I was kinda hoping the engineer would have connected something to it to make sure the feed to my property is ok, but hey.
Anyone got any other ideas? |
Re: 50MB Questions
Just remember that for every bad story you here on the internet there's probably 10 good stories, but no-one seems to think that the good stories are worth posting ;)

The 10 Mbps users are on the legacy network and I've no idea how that performs. The various area problems do not seem to afflict Winnersh, but peak time is peak time and you should bear this in mind. Which BT exchange is 1 mile from you? I'm on Wokingham exchange and am lucky to get 1.5 Mbps on ADSL2+ (my backup service). Lest you worry, I'bve only had to kick in the ADSL service twice in the past year - once for a day once for an hour. VM reliability here over the years is excellent IMO. It needs to be because their after sales service on the telephone is Shcmitt. HTH. |

Re: 50MB Questions
I am having 50 meg installed in feb. When it gets installed i will be running a speed test and if its not over 40 meg i won't be signing the new contract simple as that.
|
Re: 50MB Questions
Dont think you have a choice, I think the fact you have it installed indicates your in agreement with the contract. Mine will not run over 25 and it seems no one on here knows what to do or say, but hey I'll wait 2 weeks then see how it is.
---------- Post added at 10:23 ---------- Previous post was at 10:13 ---------- Quote:
I have 3, yes 3 Virgin mobile contracts and all are fine no problems, no issues with coverage and the price is fantastic. I have a Virgin home phone, again no problems. I have Virgin V+ XL TV with extra's, guess what.... no problem good price and no issues, HAD Virgin 10MB with no problems on speed and no down time EVER, Upgraded to 50MB and UL sits at 1.6, ping at 10m/s - 50m/s but I feel a bit short changed that it wont run at 50MB, So there’s your good story I’m very happy with VM but I expect to get what I pay for, you do the maths and guesstimate what I pay them each month & I imagine you'd feel the same. If there’s a good story VM thread I'll gladly add my comments but please don’t just add an irrelevant comment on a thread when someone is asking for advice. |

But disgusted with what I read in some cases on the forums. And remember, that in areas cases that have dragged on for months, one bad story covers possibly thousands of bad stories (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Plymouth, Exter, Bristol, Leeds, East London, Belfast ......). |
Re: 50MB Questions
Thank you,
So as my post suggests does anyone in or around my area of SK5 (Stockport, Greater Manchester) have or know of any issues with the 50MB service because I want to get to the bottom of this or downgrade back to the 10MB. |

Re: 50MB Questions
I'd just like to add that in my experience only the London server at speedtest.net gives consistent results on 50Meg. It is one of my 3 local ones but neither of the other two give consistent results. I believe that not all of their servers are capable of testing consistently at 50Meg.

Re: 50MB Questions
Just read on another forum about the RxMER??? and that above 37 & upwards is considerd best.
Since mine is RxMER (dB) 36.39 - 36.39 - 36.39 - 36.84 Could this be low enough to have an affect? |
Re: 50MB Questions
The system is supposed to adjust from 256QAM to 64QAM if RxMER goes too low. Your values are not problematic IMO. Doesn't mean there's nothing else wrong on the circuit, but your signal is stronger than the noise.

Re: 50MB Questions
Thanks,
Just thought I'd post these again, do you think its worth asking for an engineer to visit again as the one that came out on Tuesday just got me to run the TCP optimizer. Re: 50MB Questions
I never had even so much as a reply about my complaint to VM other than the auto response.
Now I just keep having issues with random drop outs... |
