Firmware upgrade?

Hi, I just have a quick question.

I have a NetGear Router from Virgin Media, I'm having some trouble with my downloads, when I download a program my files always fail.

So I'm wondering, how can I find out if I need to upgrade my firmware or have the lastest one?

Thanks.

Hi,

Which model Netgear router do you have?

Ben

It says on the back.

Wireless-G Router WGR614 v9 or do you need the serial?

Re: Firmware upgrade?

That router has embedded Virginmedia firmware and therefore cannot be flashed with any Netgear firmware.

If you try to update it you are more likely to brick the router.

*Sigh...

Ok, thanks for the advice.

Re: Firmware upgrade?

That information is not actually correct

The router can be forced to install stock firmware.

There are tutorials on the net on how to treat the router as a brick and use a firmware recovery tool to install stock fw

at your risk

Thats the key words, and from what I have seen its a 50/50 chance of bricking it permanently.

Re: Firmware upgrade?

but the netgear site offers software for brick recovery;)

in that case there is also a 50 percent chance it will work

http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?p=148146 destructions appear to have been left in place on the netgear forum

still at own risk

Netgear though will not support a router with Virginmedia firmware on board and always refer anyone who calls them with one to us.

Dude the virgin firmwared router is little better than a brick.

You said and I quote

That information is what you have been told to tell people it is not accurate. I have posted information that it could be flashed but there is ( as in a lot of things in life ) an element of risk.

Therefore my information is correct your information is FAQ sheet ;)

Not us telling the customers that, its Netgear themselves when customers ring the support line.

We only get told this by customers who ring them and get referred back to us.

No one gets told to tell the customers that whatsoever and the is no FAQ sheet..

I am well aware of the fixes out there but would not recommend them due to the possibility of bricking and invalidating the warranty, as I my sig says that I am Virginmedia staff.

As that forum says and it is from a moderator you try it at your own risk. ;)

zing_deleted 18-01-2010 21:08

Re: Firmware upgrade?

the router is practically useless in its VMified state anyway

I know the moderator says at own risk but if it was useless the moderator would have said so ;)

stuff the warranty ;) are those routers still given out?

No you either have to buy one or upgrade to get a router.

I personally use an Edimax.

We do the Netgear WGR614v9 which is the router in question and no you either have to buy one or upgrade to get the router.

Or we supply the D Link DIR615 N router which you either have to buy one or upgrade to get a router.

The D Link is a much easier model to set up as the D Link is by default unsecured.
