from today, 1 january 2010, the new irish blasphemy law becomes operational, and we begin our campaign to have it repealed. Blasphemy is now a crime punishable by a €25,000 fine.

In response, we have published a list of 25 blasphemous quotes, which have previously been published by or uttered by or attributed to jesus christ, muhammad, mark twain, tom lehrer, randy newman, james kirkup, monty python, rev ian paisley, conor cruise o’brien, frank zappa, salman rushdie, bjork, amanda donohoe, george carlin, paul woodfull, jerry springer the opera, tim minchin, richard dawkins, pope benedict xvi, christopher hitchens, pz myers, ian o’doherty, cardinal cormac murphy-o’connor and dermot ahern.

Let us prey.

Prey that now God is in law too. he'll now stop turning his back on us and do something.

One can only hope that Ireland will move into the 21st century and consign laws against free speech and free thought to the dustbin of history....

Love from a proud Anti-Theist and Anti-Deist. ;)

So we are god's prey? Is that what you're trying to tell us?

From today, 1 January 2010, the new Irish blasphemy law becomes operational, and we begin our campaign to have it repealed. Blasphemy is now a crime punishable by a €25,000 fine. The new law defines blasphemy as publishing or uttering matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby intentionally causing outrage among a substantial number of adherents of that religion, with some defences permitted.

nice step backwards - €25,000 fine. why not just let god strike down the blasphemers

You'd have better luck getting the fairies to grant wishes.

Which neatly brings us around to non-PC language offences. The punishments are worse than this new law.

It beggars belief that in this day and age a supposed modern democracy can introduce a backwards law that belongs firmly in the dark ages, unbelievable!!!

Considering the long, and very strong ties between the catholic church and the state in the repubic, then this sort of law isn't really that surprising tbh....

I think this is a stupid law, but what happened to some posters' viewpoints on other threads about "their country, their law"?;)

It's different when it comes to religion. Don't ask how, it's just different ;)

Any hint of "leave Ireland to sort out its own affairs" leaves people worryingly close to sounding like they're validifying religion and oooooh, we can't be having that.

I'd say its more to do with the fact that many people don't like the idea of religion being protected by the political elite, this is precisely the sort of thing you'd expect to see in the undemocratic Middle East, not a member of the EU.

Right enough, it's not like the UK automatically gives 26 seats in the House of Lords to Church Of England bishops.

A much more modern outlook alltogether.

Leprechauns... Im a leprechaun and I don't grant wishes... Ireland is still in the dark ages, it needs to move on.

between Paedophile priest and tribunals of enquiries, you would think they have enough to put right, never mind the god & law business.

Time to grow up !!!

Could be one and the same if you've read any Erich Von Daniken books. :)
