Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Hi Peeps

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

From memory in outlook 2007, when you go to set up an email all you do is enter the email address and outlook will go off and get you the details and fill them in for you.

If you can't get it to do it automatically then this link should provide the info you need for outlook.

Have a look here & scroll down to Freeserve:

http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/t...-settings.html

pop.freeserve.com for incoming, Virgin's smtp server for outgoing.

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Thanks for the reply but that way dont work needs to be manually, Need to use a relay type smtp from virgin.
When i was with o2 i used smtp.relay.o2.com so i could use any of my old emails.

---------- Post added at 21:51 ---------- Previous post was at 21:47 ----------

cobbydaler cheers for that i know the freeserve settings but the virgin settings dont seem to work.
Im using smtp.ntlworld.com

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Just use the standard virgin SMTP server, that'll allow you to send any email OK as long as you are on a VM connection. To recieve obviously you'll need the freeserve POP

Sephiroth 26-12-2009 22:59

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Maybe I'm off track here but I have VM, BTINTERNET & MSN e-mail accounts.

I regularly switch between VM & O2 broadband and freely use all three e-mail services.

So when you moved to VM I wouldn't have expected that you needed to make any changes to the settings in Outlook 2007.

So:

1. What happens when you hit send/receive?

2. What are your current settings in Outlook for the account (excl. password)

What error are you getting?

Depends on the rules of the SMTP server, most don't allow relaying (using the SMTP serve from another connection), some do allow relaying if you're either authenticated or POP before SMTP

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

the error i get is:
sending reported error (0x800cc0d) cannot find the email server. verifiy the server informstion in your account properties

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Try smtp.virgin.net

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Are you sure you're in an ex :ntl area?

Kymmy 26-12-2009 23:15

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

You sure then that the server address is typed in correctly? (seriously this does happen quite often)

Also try pinging the address or even telnet into the server on port 25

(use command prompt or Putty )

Yes i have an old ntl box the virgin man used to install.

---------- Post added at 22:21 ---------- Previous post was at 22:18 ----------

Yes all the address etc is correct i really have no clue where to go now bloody virgin have been no help at all! should of stayed with o2

Kymmy 26-12-2009 23:24

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

If you;re using XP type in the command prompt the following

Code:

telnet smtp.ntlworld.com 25
If though on something without telnet then download putty and telnet into smtp.ntlworld.com on port 25

If on either of them you do not get the server ready message then it's probably a firewall or network fault stopping it

Sephiroth 26-12-2009 23:25

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

You didn't post your account settings for Freeserve account. I should have mentioned tha you might need to set your Outgoing Server Port Number to 587 (not 25).

Peter_ 26-12-2009 23:26

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Is this a new email address such as @virginmedia.com that you are trying to use or an old @ntlworld.com address from when you were previously a customer.

Kymmy 26-12-2009 23:29

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Either way it wouldn't come up with the following

Sounds more like he can't reach the address than it rejecting him

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Ok i get a esmtp server ready?

Peter_ 26-12-2009 23:32

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

If he is using an old email address from a previous account then as part of the migration process to the googlemail platform it will probably have been deleted due to it being an orphaned email address.

If he now has a brand new account then the servers will be for the google platform which also require SSL.

Kymmy 26-12-2009 23:33

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

OK, that totally discounts the server not ready error..

Do you have an antivirus that checks your outgoing emails?? Try turning off the email checking if you have

Also in line with what Moldova is saying what is the last part of your email address???

skki 26-12-2009 23:37

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Yeah tried 587 still owt.

---------- Post added at 22:37 ---------- Previous post was at 22:33 ----------

yeah it's a virginmedia account although im using ntlworld for the smtp even on the virgin email which works fine with outlook.

Moldova and myself asked the question as this year VM moved all the new email accounts off-site, so what is the last bit of your primary email address

XXXXX@ntlworld.com or XXXXX@virginmedia.com

??

[edit] Moldova beet me to it

Outlook is just an easier version of outlook express and uses exactly the same settings in an easier layout with a test function, but we do not support it.

If you know how to set up outlook all you do is transfer the relevant settings over.

Have you actually set up an alias for this @virginmedia.com account, instead of say ab123c4567@virginmedia.com to something along the lines of johnsmith@virginmedia.com as unless you have set up an alias it will never ever work.

If you have an alias and you cannot get the instructions to work on your @virginmedia.com address then you are doing something wrong which is usually not ticking the SSL boxes and changing the server numbers and forgetting the tick box for this server requires authentication.

I was asking if you have a email alias such as your name rather than the number one that you are issued with.

Kymmy and Moldova, I think this one has confused you both a little. Actually it isn't a Virgin Media issue so why the Mods have left it I don't know.

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Hi pip
I dont think that the smtp.orangehome.co.uk will work as im not a orange user. Im trying to set up to use an old freeserve email through virgin, as explianed before other isp ive been with have supplied me a smtp to send out email from old address eg cj@bigbeats.fsnet.co.uk and even googlemail address. I think im going to try and track down a UK number for virgin.

All they will say is that outlook is unsupported and the same with your 3rd party email accounts as they are not covered by the support scope.

UK numbers are 151 or 0845 454 1111

It is a virgin media issue as he's trying to relay through his VM connection using the VM SMTP..

Though yes it should be moved to email forum.. In the future though if you're that worried about the forum it's in then please next time use the report post button

pip08456 27-12-2009 11:57

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

With Outlook it is not necessary to relay through VM's smtp server, I don't.

Orangehome is the old freeserve server. Freeserve-Wanadoo-Orange, all the same server.

skki 27-12-2009 13:25

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

Yeah your right about VM's support just shows how bad their customer service is coz every other isp i have used in recent years HAS been able to help, think i might just go back to o2 not one problem with them.

Pip so but you do need to relay through you new smtp servers i cannot use thr orange one i have tried!

Well anymore ideas guys

pip08456 27-12-2009 18:00

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin

A) Can you receive emails from your freeserve account?

B) If you check the link in the post I made earlier it will take you to a forum where freeserve users have sucessfully used orange servers to receive and send freserve emails even though they don't have an Orange account.

As I said before this is not really a VM problem it is an Outlook problem.

Use the Orange website to get the correct settings for Outlook (including ports) If Outlook is set correctly for recieving emails then the problem is in the smtp settins as these are only used for outgoing mail POP3 is your incoming. It has nothing to do with your ISP.

I don't believe you need to relay through VM. I don't for my non-VM account; I also set up a test GMail account recently in the way I'm describing.

IMO, you should specify all your settings as normal for freeserve, ignoring relay and set the smtp port to 587.

When you said you tried 587 without success, you didn't say which server name settings you were using. Sorry for troubling you with this repeat suggestion if you were using the standard freeserve serever names.

If 587 doesn't work, Orange are blocking it. Port 25 is blocked by VM. You could try 465 (with SSL ticked). There is a full port list here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...P_port_numbers

and you're interested in those with SMTP for POP3 shown.

Also, there is merit in trying a different SMTP address like SMTP.orange.co.uk and experimentin with the various port numbers. That's a long shot but it is reported elsewhere (I forget where, sorry).

---------- Post added at 11:25 ---------- Previous post was at 10:44 ----------

I just tried something with my BTinternet account. I set the Outgoing Mail Server to smtp.ntlworld.com (maybe you'll substitute whatever your VM outgoing server is).

I unticked My outgoing server SMTP requires authentication (although I believe you could supply your VM credentials). SMTP port was 25.

And the test message sent OK.
