Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
Simply put - No and no, as long as its a cable router (I'm assuming you're on a cable connection, not ADSL).
Although I'm sure there are lots of opinions as to the best router. I've just installed a Netgear WNR2000 for my first attempt at wireless. |
Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
ok thanks... however how would i find out what my passphrase or whatever is on virgin so that i can connect my pc and ps3 to my network?

Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
You set your own pass up on the router as part of the set up.

Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
You don't need to worry about this. The modem takes care of the connection to VM. You have to sort out the connection between your PCs and the router. The router's instructions take you through the process.
btw - just looked at reviews for the WNR2000. Someone mentioned it wouldn't work with a PS3. Best to have a look around the web to make sure you buy a compatible router. Or ask on here ;) |
Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
is that on all routers? what about on a NETGEAR DG834 v3 Wireless ADSL modem router?
|
Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
Is your connection cable or ADSL? You need to get the matching type of router.

Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
ive just checked and on my modem it says that its a cable modem so it must be a cable connection right... but the router what im looking on getting is a modem router so i wont require that modem anymore. so would i not need to tell virgin that i am using a different modem?

Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
For cable you still need the cable modem and connect the router to it.

Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
so cant i get the a adsl modem and router?

Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
There are two main ways for broadband to come into your home: via the telephone line (ADSL) or via cable (err - cable). The two systems are very different and so an ADSL modem won't work on a cable connection and vice versa. Since we've established that you've got a cable connection, forget about anything to do with ADSL and concentrate on cable systems. If it says ADSL it won't work in your system.
In a cable system, you keep the modem and connect a cable router to its output (where it previously connected to your computer). You can then connect a number of computers to the router, with wire or wireless. You don't replace the modem (and VM would be annoyed if you did). Since you're not replacing VM's modem, they are not concerned with what you're doing on your side of it. |
Re: change from wired to wireless on virgin??
If you have a Cable Modem (one which shares teh coax with the TV) then you want a Cable/DSL router with an Ethernet WAN interface
