No web access
Hi all,
Here's a good one... Family member's PC's and network which I setup this year - one desktop and one laptop. Desktop is connected wired to a Linksys router and the laptop connects via the wireless. All was working up until a few days ago. Problem now is that both PC's won't browse any sites - I can get to Google, but news.bbc.co.uk does nothing. No proxy settings enabled. The KIS2010 installation won't update and nor will Windows Defender (not such a great issue). I've not looked at the laptop yet but they say it's operating about the same. I've setup logmein on both PC and laptop - again - I've not tried the laptop but I can get to the desktop PC and remote control it, so it does have internet connectivity. The ISP they are using is Orange and during the the initial setup It would not connect at all until I changed the MTU on the router to 1492. I can ping the router internaly (from logmein!) and I can ping www.bbc.co.uk and get responses from both. Nothing in the config has changed. I've tried diabling KIS2010 - but same issues. Windows Firewall is off. Router has been rebooted. I'm starting to think ISP / DNS issue and I'm now scratching my head! Any ideas? |
Re: No web access
It won't hurt to set a secondary DNS server to opendns ( 208.67.222.222 or
208.67.220.220) |

Can I change them on the NIC as the router is doing the DHCP and supplying the IP info? BTW - I can ping both current DNS IP's: 193.36.79.100, 193.36.79.101 |
Re: No web access
You just set them locally. I was having similar problems on BE last night. Some sites worked, some didn't. I changed one of the DNS servers to opendns, and everything started working again. Generally, I think it's a good idea to set one the ISP and one to OpenDNS. It seems unlikely they will both fall over simultaneously.

I think you'll need to wait for someone more knowledgeable than me then... Sorry.

No worries - thanks for the advice so far - awaiting Zing or Kymmy!! |
Re: No web access
If you can ping sites etc. What Browser are they using? If its IE try something other than that...? That would discount rogue setting/hijack.
---------- Post added at 23:05 ---------- Previous post was at 23:05 ---------- As you can ping the sites, it seems less like a network issue but more like a browser issue |

Don't think it's a browser issue as it's affecting multiple PC's at the same time - I think it's DNS / ISP realated to be honest. |
Re: No web access
can you ping sites using the FQDN??
i.e.. try pinging xrv.org.uk If yes then try pinging bikelane.com (gave you a UK based site and an american based site as that should check DNS and routing..) If they ping OK then your DNS is fine if not then you know it's DNS issues.. Could be simple routing issues, we used to have problems with Orange and used to get stuff like american sites, or any site not in thier own cache go down quite often :( One of the reasons as to why I moved to VM (and the fact that thier 40Gb FUP stinks) |
Re: No web access
Delete all of your temp internet files and do a ipconfig /flushdns in command prompt, which would clear DNS caches and IE caches. See if google works then :)
If you can ping via DNS names (as Kymmy said) then its not DNS. |

As aI said before I can ping the name etc and it all resolves correctly. I'm sure it must be some kind of ISP issue - the subscriber has phoned Orange Broadband and they are looking into it. I have a hunch it will magicaly start working again at some point... ---------- Post added at 16:50 ---------- Previous post was at 16:40 ---------- Flushed DNS - no change - can ping www.bbc.co.uk and trace route gives a full response, but when browsing to www.bbc.co.uk it never connects - same for any other site, and Kaspersky is complaing that it's DB is out of date becuase it cannot update. Looking more like an ISP issue - it's acting as if they have been put into a walled garden - and I've asked if the bill has been paid - it has! |
Re: No web access
Have you checked if there are any proxy settings set in the browser? Came across a similar situation the other day where proxy was set at 127.0.0.1

---------- Post added at 18:45 ---------- Previous post was at 18:17 ---------- Fixed!! It was the MTU setting. 1492 on the router and 1500 on desktop PC and laptop. Wonder if it was a Windows update that killed them both... |
Re: No web access
Strange thing to happen just because of an MTU setting though? especially as they weren't THAT different :)
---------- Post added at 19:42 ---------- Previous post was at 19:41 ---------- Glad its sorted though |
