BBC HD Subtitles

Tried to watch the new series Paradox on BBC HD Tuesday night, subtitles where way behind the spoken word. Switched back to BBC 1, no problems.

Is it a problem with Virgin or BBC HD? Any one else notice this problem?

There is no problems with subtitles on Living HD, it appears to be just a problem with BBC HD.

Yeah, it happened to me before on my old Virgin HD box, but when the new Samsung box replaced it, the subtitles on BBC HD disappear. I am sure people have the similar problem as what you have just said.

Thanks for reply, nice to know I am not the only one to have this problem.

I wonder if the problem is with virgin or BBC HD?

I believe it is to do with Virgin cos when I checked BBC HD with subtitles on my freesat box, no problem at all.

New to Virgin & can't get subtitles High def., I Have the new Samsung V+ is this why ?

Would I get them with a SA box ? Really need them as Hearing not very good at all.

I have looked for an option to turn on HD subtitles but no success.

I can get them in SD viewing.

Re: BBC HD Subtitles

I have the SA virgin + box and get subtitles on BBCHD and Living HD, but on BBCHD they are a good 10 secs behind the spoken word. Probably not a problem if your hearing is very bad.

Bensden, so far I know Living HD is the only HD channel that has subtitles on the new Samsung box. Anyway, I contacted the Virgin technical support team today to report this issue, they will contact me via the email in 3-5 days. Hopefully, they can get it sorted.

Sorry for the delay. Virgin engineer will attend my house on this Thursday to sort out the subtitles problem, fingers crossed that he can get it sorted.

Thanks for the reply. I will be very surprised if a home visit can solve the problem, every one who has replied to my posts have the same problem, so I can't see it being a local issue. Will be interesting to hear what the engineer says.

I had a phone call from Virgin today, they have logged the problem against my account and will look into it and asked that any one with this problem to contact Virgin, the more complaints they get the better the chance of a fix. The woman said she had tried the subtitles and had noticed the problem.

Re: BBC HD Subtitles

Sending a tech to your house is a waste of time. It's a problem with the broadcast. The VM engineering team are well aware of the problem, but I'm not sure when it will be fixed.

Yeah, it's the way they are sourced... tech will be a waste of time.

Yeah, true. I have just realised that BBC HD does not broadcast until 4pm and the engineer comes on Thursday morning, it is best for me to contact them to cancel the visit.

Have just got Virgin and bought a new HD TV to go with it. My daughter is moderately deaf so we use subtitles al the time. i was very interested to read about the problems with the different V+boxes. I assumed it was a BBC problem rather than Virgin so I'll definately be getting onto them as soon as i get home tonight

I beleave the problem is with Virgin, BBC HD via Freesat does not have this problem, I don't know about sky HD.

Digital Fanatic 07-01-2010 19:18

Re: BBC HD Subtitles

It's the way Virgin get the subtitles and unfortunately there is a slight delay... there's nothing that can be done.

The channel didn't have any subtitles on VM for a long time, so for the moment it is better than nothing... I believe it is on the to do list to improve the way they are delivered on BBC HD.

Its more than just a delay, If you have a Samsung V+ as I have, then you cannot get subtitles on HD at all. Its a big let down for those of us that need them. Something that Virgin really needs to sort, No other supplier of HD has a problem with it. I'm sure they could resolve this if they put their minds to it.

Would be nice if we had some feedback from Virgin regarding this problem.

It's a software fault in the Samsung V+, and will be fixed in a future update.

Yes, the same delay will happen. Unless that problem is fixed first.

At last I now have subtitles on my Samsung V+ on all HD channels that are broadcasting them, & they are in sync. plus I see they have made cancelling reminders easy. Well done Virgin at last I can now enjoy HD without a trumpet to my ear.

My BBC HD subtities are not working on my Samsung V+, can you check if yours is working? Living HD is the only channel that works for the subtitles on my V+ box.

Yes just checked again working for me on BBC & Living HD, all in sync, I'm in Kent, perhaps you have not had the update yet. I had the update about 2 days ago. Can you set a reminder & then select the same channel & cancel the reminder just by pressing OK. this was part of the same update.

Tried to set the reminder, but it said it was not set. This could mean my box is not updated yet.

Sounds like it, You may get others saying if they can or cannot get subtitles on their Samsung V+ boxs.

I still don't get Channel 4HD subtitles even though the guide shows them as being broadcast. Perhaps Virgin don't support this yet.

Sky HD hasn't got subtitles on ITV1 HD or Channel4 HD either, so it's a source issue, i.e. the broadcaster.

Theres no real spec for how a broadcaster should do distribution of HD subtitling. Theres no such thing as VBI in HD, so new methods are being looked at for how to carry subtitles within the video distribution. The only channels currently doing subtitles are the ones who can encode the channels at the same place as playout occurs so don't have to distribute the subtitles to a seperate encoding site.

Let's hope they can get it sorted, it spoils what would be a good service.

DVB does not specify how subtiting is embedded within video for distribution prior to encoding. Thats post encoding.
Sky don't use DVB subtitling. Freesat do.

yeah I read about Sky not doing DVB... VM can use both DVB & VBI on their platform. :)

Sky launched before the DTG had finished the DVB subtitling spec.

Re: BBC HD Subtitles

A reply from ITV regarding subtitles on ITVHD, not looking good.

" ITV HD is a new service. The initial focus for our engineering team is to ensure that the HD channel is up and running and working correctly and efficiently. The team will then be in a position to look at the provision of access services for ITV HD, such as subtitles and audio description, and configure the operational standards for the platforms on which the channel operates.

It is unlikely that ITV HD will carry AD or subtitles until much later in the year or even into next year. However, we do appreciate the importance of access services to many of our viewers and would like to assure you that provision of subtitles, audio description and signing will continue as normal on the main ITV1 service in the meantime."

Hi DF, I don't get subtitles on ITVHD, as some Virgin Media subscribers now get them, is it a regional thing ? I'm in the Ex Telewest area.

Sounds like a local headend issue (RHE)... may I suggest a post on our Community Forum?

They can check your local RHE and see if there is an issue there. :)
