Police report pregnant woman to social services

Quote:

A pregnant woman who invited a policewoman into her half- decorated home ended up being reported to social workers for being a potentially unfit mother.

The officer did not mention that she was unhappy about the state of Mrs Cooke's rented house, but after leaving wrote a memo to the social services.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: 'Our officers aim to act in the best interests of everyone they come into contact with.

'Their role can include making sure people get any extra help and support they might need.'

So social services are going to give her the help she needs to get the decorating finished, and send some decorators around then, or just put her on the at risk list?

Another member of the public who has probably lost respect for the gestapo police.

Actually, Social Services are doing nothing..

You might want to try reading the article..

Yes, because the last thing we need in this day and age is the police and social services actually trying to work together for child protection.

Have you actually been paying attention the last few years at all?

If the policewoman thought the police was unfit to raise a child then she its her job, if not her duty to report it. Its social services job to follow up on the claim and assess whether it is valid or not.

Just as I thought. no help with the decorating then.

No, but they are taking no further action either, so the article is actually pointless.

A house that's in the process of being decorated isn't much for concern, is it?

Stuart 10-11-2009 11:31

Re: Police report pregnant woman to social services

Which is why they accepted that the Policewoman was a little overzealous. Remember, the Policewoman saw the house. The person she sent the memo to didn't, so for all they knew, the house could actually have been unfit for human habitation, so they may have needed to investigate.

well you do not want nails and debris lying around once the baby is mobile but while it is still in the womb the baby is safe unless the woman stands on a nail and get tetanus or falls over

What action is there to take on a pregnant woman on a half decorated house?
it's not so much the SS, it's the thinking of the police that this was considered to be such a risk that they thought the SS should look into it.

Ahh, yes, taking The Daily Fail's word verbatium. That's usually reliable isn't it?

Actually, looking at that article, the standard of journalism is appalling (although sadly par for the course for the Mail).

The headline, at best, misses half the story and at worst is false. The reporter appears to have gone in with a definate bias, and seems determined to make it look like another case of big brother interfering with our rights, and they even refer back to a story about a woman smacking her child in a supermarket (which actually isn't either relevant or fair to the woman who has been reported to the social services).

Finally, they don't even have the balls to publish the name of the hack that wrote it.

Give yourself a pat on the back for the 'Daily Fail' mention of the day.

Exactly. What action is there to take? None. Hence them not taking any.

Also, we don't know that the police woman thought there was a risk. She could have thought the Social Security department would offer help..

She's 10 weeks pregnant. she felt the police were judging her.
these are probably irrelevant facts compared to the fact that the 'Daily Fail' reported it.

Telegraph reports her as being 10 weeks.

Well they didn't pull the wool over your eyes then ... ;)

That is exactly what the Wail is up to. They, like the ****, are engaged in a massive artillery barrage designed to soften up the Labour lines so that come the General Election there is absolutely no chance whatsoever of G. Brown doing a J. Major and retaining power by the skin of his teeth.

That's why your super soaraway Sun has spent three days (count 'em) making headline news out of a spelling mistake and why this forum has almost one thread per day from the Daily Mail on issues of State interference or race relations issues. These are what's known as dog-whistle campaigns, designed to rile up anyone who has a tendency to be riled up by such issues.

For the generally uneducated readership of the Sun, it's about disrespect innit. That Brown disrespectin our boys or summink. And for the blinkered little Englanders who prefer the Wail, it's poltical correctness gone mad, 1984 come true, etc etc etc.

Not really, and that wasn't the point I was making. The point I was making is simply that if they have such a slapdash approach to article writing that the headline is misleading, then where else have they been lazy? Are the facts (as presented) true and complete? Have the police apologised to the lady? The Mail hasn't said they have, but with their lax and biased reporting, how do we know the police haven't?

I don't know, but if you call the police or they call on you. talk to them on the doorstep. there's no chance of any misunderstandings then.

they will be suspicious and report the fact that you wouldn't let them in, and probably return whilst you're sleeping by use of the big red key, but that's the risk you have to take :) :D

Since they dropped the requirement to be knowing absolutely everything thats ever happened or is ever going to happen for cops then they have to rely on what they can see at a specific moment.

If the cop was in a house and in her opinion it may cause an issue for the unborn kid then she was duty bound to report it. How was she to know the decorating was half-done? In fact how are we to know it was half-done aside from the word of the woman?

Trust me there are plenty of houses in disgraceful conditions out there, it must have been pretty bad for the cop to take it further.

Still as has been said before, usual Daily Mail "Ooh look at the state interfering" story.
I wonder how they would have reported it if the cop had reported the house lived in by Tracey Connelly and Steven Barker?

To be honest, its a bit of a non-story as far as I can see....

If the police officer had had the wit to ask the lady in question if she was decorating, then it would most likely have been case closed. Over-reaction all round me thinks....

Strange story - she is only 10/12 weeks pregnant (depending which article you read), and in the pictures, doesn't look noticably pregnant (like most women who are 10/12 weeks pregnant).

I wonder how the subject of her pregnancy arose?

That's got me thinking now. does she intentionally have her knee in the way so we can't see if there's a 10/12 week old bump?

Probably arose in conversation between her and the police woman. you know what women are like. always bragging about having a baby or just gossiping about stuff like that for no apparent reason.
