Webmail query
 

I am going away shortly on a cruise where I will purchase an internet package payable by the minute and I was wondering if there is a way I can log on to ntl webmail, download my emails, read them offline, type a reply, and then log on again to send them to save money. I know I can do this with OE, but won't be able to access OE on the ship.

1. You're going away on a cruise man, what's wrong with you :D :D Leave the emails until you get back.

2. If you're taking your own laptop you could always install OE or similar and then you could download them and do whatever you like.

3. If you're using a shared computer on board ship then I wouldn't want to be downloading anything to it, and I certainly wouldn't want to put any sensitive/personal information into it, as it will then be available for everybody to get to potentially.

Thanks, Rob. I take my netbook mainly for keeping in touch with the family. I wasn't aware that I could still use OE, I thought I had to be connected via my home ISP. I have OE on my netbook, so can I send and receive mail the same way as what I do at home? Sorry to sound surprised, but I have always used webmail on holidays, as I didn't think OE would work?:confused:

Actually you'll have problems sending emails, but recieving should be OK..

To send emails you'll probably have to ask the ships IT guy for thier outgoing mail server (SMTP server address) and use that to relay emails from your vm (or other ISP's account)

Go to http://portableapps.com/ and install the suite onto a USB pen you will see one of the apps is Thunderbird portable which should do what you want.

There is also a portable version of Firefox and the good thing about these apps is they work directly from the pen and don't install anything on the PC you are using it on plus it doesn't leave any history on the PC either it is all confined to the USB pen.

open the web browser and load webmail as usual open all the emails in new tabs and open a load of new mail pages in new tabs log off. Read your email and write replies or new mail in the seperate windows . Log back on and send them job done no messing about

Yeah, thanks for that. I have done that and copied my OE address book over. I guess now that when I want to check my email, is that I load up the programme from the pen, log on to the Web and send and receive OE as I do now? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm not all that bright on this sort of stuff:dunce::dunce:

Thats right, you would just use it as you would a normal client. I don't normally use it offline but as far as I know if it doesn't see an internet connection it will work offline and if you send anything offline it will sit in the outbox until you do get a connection, then next time you check for emails or if you refresh it, it will send the mail that is in the outbox.

Except you asked if you would just send and received OE, and D_Skids is talking about Thunderbird.

I'm guessing that there's some confusion here.....

Yes, but wouldn't I be able to use Thunderbird using my ntl server settings. This is getting all so confusing now:confused::confused:

That's the issue, you can use OE, thunderbird or whichever mail program you want to use...


BUT....

Using your normal VM settings you will recieve OK but NOT be able to send.. As I said in post #4 you'll probably have to ask the ships IT guy (or it'll be on a leaflet somewhere) as to what SMTP server you can use to relay your outbound VM emails.. This SMTP server should be the ONLY change you'll need to make

Can you not just login into the VM email server on line?

This would save you from messing with email software.

Plus when you get home you'll download then anyway, I did this on my hols this year.

I have also used my Netbook to send a email (viw the online site) without any problems.

I think the original quote gave his erasons for not using webmail where he needs to be constantly logged in ;)

I did post a possibly solution to that using webmail;) I know it might seem a pain but its what I would do I hate pop email clients and tried thunderbird and it didnt do what I wanted it to
