Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
Hi,
I've just installed Windows 7 Home Premium. When I went through the installation, it asked me to pick a wireless network, which I did, and enter the Network Key, which I also did. When installation was complete, I could go on the internet as normal. Since a reboot, this is no longer the case. Whenever I try to sign into the network, I get "It is taking longer than usual to log you on to the network." I then get "You are connected to your network with limited or no connectivity." In the wireless network list it says "Connected" next to my network but it says "Unidentified Network - No Internet Access" with a picture of a bench at the top. I'm am using a Belkin wireless G router with the most up to date firmware. My gf's Macbook (which I am posting from now) and my PS3 still connect as before. I used to run WinXP and that worked fine. The wireless network adaptor I am using is a Realtek 8185 Extensible (although, I think it's a different one; which one, I couldn't tell you.) In Device Manager, the Network Adaptors section is already open (like it does when there is a problem with a device in that section) but the properties page says the device is working properly. Any and all help would be apppreciated. Thanks in advance. |
Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
do all the devices show as working correctly?
|
Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
Yes they do. But they are not.

Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
I assume its not trying to log onto someone elses network in error?
|
Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
Got a wired NIC in the machine? Try and wired connection first...
|
Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
It's not trying to log onto someone else's network in error.
Trying a wired connection would be pointless as I don't want it wired. Plus, my computer is at the other side of the flat and it is not a laptop I can move easily. Thanks for the advice though, it is appreciated. :) |

No it would'nt be pointless - it's called troubleshooting - if it does work we know it's wireless related....it it does not work we know there's something up with the networking.... It's a flat? Can't be that difficult to move then - off you go and let us know the results... :dozey: |
Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
Ha ha ha, if I hadn't already just dug out a 20m ethernet cable, I'd have been a bit irritated by that post but I know you're trying to help...
Anyway, 20m ethernet cable = internet access therefore it's a wireless problem! |
Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
What security have you set on the router? WPA/WPA2? TKIP or AES
|
Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
Security is WPA2-PSK/AES. I have also tried renaming the network, disabling security completely and changing the network key. All of this has the same result that my original post describes. I think it may be a driver issue as I have a Newlink wireless 54g PCI card but Device Manager is showing it as a Realtek 8151 Extensible card. If I can't resolve the issue tonight, I'll go to the PC shop over the road and buy an up-to-date PCI card.

Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
The fact it connected to being with rules out a total driver incompatibility. Whilst having you play around did you try changing the default broadcast channel? also for point of reference try it without security temporarily

Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
When I upgraded my laptop on Wednesday I was having 'pauses' on the connection. Intel released Windows 7 specific drivers yesterday and since then it's been spot on.

Oh, another thing: when the wireless network list on Win7 said I was connected, I went on to the router's status page; it only had this computer in the DHCP client list. |
Re: Windows 7 Connectivity Issues
you could try windows update with your cable lol

---------- Post added at 20:19 ---------- Previous post was at 19:58 ---------- Okay, I think I've cracked it. Well, I think Zing's cracked it. There was an optional update which was for my wireless card. Installed it and I can now access the internet via wireless. If it stays like that, I'll come on here and post again. Fingers crossed! ---------- Post added at 20:25 ---------- Previous post was at 20:19 ---------- Right guys, I am now posting from Windows 7 which is a relief as I'm not a big Mac fan. Love Windows 7; it's properly fast! From login screen to ready to use in less than 5 seconds. The down-side is that I won't be able to go and make a brew while the computer is booting up. Ahh well! Anyway, thanks for your help guys (especially Zing for leading me on to the right answer.) Mucho appreciato! |
