downstream power is too low i would say, but if your not having any issues then no need to call vm.

doing the speedtest getting various speeds from 12 mb to 18 mb - will monitor it and see how it goes.

A low power level is an indication you are on the wrong tap in the cab and would need a technician. Jump on the newsgroups and they will book one for you, without the need to call up. Rather book it now than suffer slow speeds or connection drops.

Just make sure the modem doesn't have an attenuator on the back, between the coax and the modem. If it does, just take it off and see how the power levels are.

:)

Excellent, much, much better. You're aiming for -10 to 10 but the targets are different depending who you speak to .. -5 to 5 is a clear winner.

Is this connected direct or through a modem, if direct give Tech Support a call.

Tech Support is open 24/7 on 151 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

tried again with 4 files

250kb/sec
247kb/sec
330kb/sec
400kb/sec

Just multiply by 8 and add 10% for overheads and still around 13Mb.

If possible try a direct connection and run the test again.

Do you see any packet loss ? As per the forum mods it is safe to send me your MAC address. Pass it over tonight and I will ask the network team to check out your connection.

I have done a continous ping to smtp.ntlworld.com and getting these results

Ping statistics for 81.103.221.11:
Packets: Sent = 265, Received = 219, Lost = 46 (17% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 13ms, Maximum = 64ms, Average = 26ms

still not getting a decent speed - should go back to 10 MB as I was getting a stable 10 MB connection but since upgrading to 20 MB this afternoon getting 7-8 MB for the past 3 hours

google DAP its a download manager or if you use firefox try flashgot. These are multi threaded download aplications that hit the site with more than 1 connection at a time. Then try just one download from game files and run it through DAP and see what speed you get.

I do not trust speed tests but of all of them ive tried this is the best one

Start to look at your equipment and or your cabling. Is everything screwed in nice and tight?

How are you connected when you are getting this packet loss?

wired connection, PC has a gigibit nic connected to 10/100 port on VM Netgear wifi router

last night around 1am was getting 19 MB this morning am getting 17.5 MB so improved

may be last night the network in my area was heavily utilised.

jellyfish 23-10-2009 19:56

Re: just upgraded to XL BB 20 MB

doing more test using http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ getting speeds from 5mb - 14mb

I assume my area is heavily utilised hence the fluctutation in speeds
