Cheerleader develops neurological disorder after SEASONAL flu shot

Quote:

Experts claim serious side effects of flu shots amount to about one in a million - well this is what that one in a million looks like. This has freaked me out enough to bypass flu shots in the future. But what do I know - to each their own. A 25 year old woman in Ashburn, Virginia has come down with a severe debilitating neurological disorder days after receiving a seasonal flu vaccination.

I've amended the title as it's about a regular seasonal flu shot, and not swine flu. The video is mis-titled to scare people.

She'd have been better off with a runny nose and a good dosing of Beechams powders.....

Re: Cheerleader develops neurological disorder after SEASONAL flu shot

I won't be having any of these shots we have here seeing as even doctors are saying they're no good for you. And it looks like you really don't want to be that 1 in a million....

Re: Cheerleader develops neurological disorder after SEASONAL flu shot

well if you are one of the high risk groups the odds of getting seriously ill from the flu rises. This woman does not look like she falls into thiss list so the odds of her developing serious conditions from the flu is low.

The odds of something like this happening is 1 million to 1

Between 1979 and 2001 on average 41.400 people died per year from seasonal flu 304 million people in the US so that equates roughly to 1 in 7400 ( please forgive my maths if that figure is incorrect)

figures taken from http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...ne-flu-britain

so you have a 1 in 7400 chance of dying from seasonal flu and 1 in a million chance of a serious problem from a vaccine

edit figures corrected cuz its US population

I keep being told I should have all (flu - swine flu and pnumonia vacciine) these shots. But I must admit I find myself thinking it's not worth it.

It's not things like the above that put me off, but I just don't feel happy about having any of them.

I have mine every year as does my partner and son, not too sure about having the swine flu one as I am not sure just how much testing has gone into it or if it has been hurried through.

My 12 yr old has had the flu jab coming into the winter for the last 3 years. Previous to getting the flu jab she spent time in hospital every winter with chest infections when the steroids didn't work, increased dosage of her inhalers didn't work, so she'll get it again this year.
I won't be allowing her to get the one they are planning to give for protection against swine flu though, I'm not convinced enough testing has been done.

The swine flu one is def very suspect. I feel so sorry for that girl, i'm only a year younger than her and couldn't imagine having that happen to me.

Normal Flu Vaccine is usually only given to those in higher risk groups. Ones who flu would be riskier for.

Those saying about the Swine Flu vaccine. I have heard it's pretty much the same as the normal flu vaccine but with just the different strain of flu. Thus they are confident of it's safety, after all they change the normal flu vaccine every year to account for different strains as well.

There is a minute risk involved with any vaccinations & always has been. Nobody can guarantee they're 100% safe. Life is a risky business, there are no guarantees.

She didn't have the swine flu vaccine. She had the seasonal flu one.

True. You just need to weigh up the risks..

I am Diabetic so I wil be having the Swine Flu shot the same as I had the Flu shot, any potential risk outweighs me actually getting the Flu.

Then good job that I am not a teenager or american.

The potential hazard to my health is more of an incentive to have the Swine flu shot due to being diabetic.

Quote:

So far, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have received five reports of GBS in people who received the H1N1 vaccine since Oct. 6, not including Jordan’s case, said Dr. Claudia J. Vellozzi, deputy director for immunization safety.

Out of about 40 million doses of H1N1 vaccine available to date, that’s a far lower rate of GBS than the 1 case that develops in every 1 million people who receive the regular flu vaccine.

"It's much less than we'd expect," she said, adding that many cases go unreported.
In 1976, about 1 additional case of GBS developed in every 100,000 people who were vaccinated against the swine flu, according to the CDC.
There is no evidence at all that this is any more dangerous than the normal flu vaccine. It's important to keep isolated cases in perspective and not to contribute to a sense of fear and distrust around the vaccine. The media will focus on any illness that occurs after a vaccination, related or not, in an attempt to drive panic. So let's keep calm and point out there is no evidence for this fear.

I am not scaremongering but when I had the pneumonia jab my arm swelled up, the pain and heat it gave off were not nice so I had to have a course of antibiotics to cure that ! Best of luck !

My mother had a nasty reaction to that as well, apparently a fair few people at the local GP's had the same reaction (they think it may have been something to do with the needles from what my mum said).

I had my Swine Flu jab this afternoon and feel absolutely fine, just an occasional twinge and slightly tender but nothing to complain about, probably more to do with the technique employed by the person doing the injection.

I am also going next week for mine doing, I guess the risks are worth taking when you have other medical conditions.

In the last fortnight I have had firstly Tamiflu and then the Swine Flu vaccine, doing quite well even though my arm still hurts a bit where she stuck the needle in.:D
