websites which don't work with ntl/virgin

I couldn't find one, but I wondered if there's a list of sites which don't work completely, or sporadically with ntl/virgin via cable.

I ask because one of the online banks I use, I can log in, view account details, balances etc, but transferring money never works, it always times out, no matter which of the 3 operating systems on this PC i use or 2 on the other PC!

HMV, i tried to buy a DVD earlier, added it to my cart, logged in, tried to proceed to check out, but it timed out.

both instances, tried using my work supplied BT ADSL connection, and it worked flawlessly.

HMV I haven't bought anything from in ages, so I don't know if this is recent, but the banking issue has been like it for ages.

Cheers

Have you spoken to internet banking team with your bank? It could be a simple issue, such as firewall, antivirus etc

i have been told that ISPs do only block some sites if they r known to be dangerous or illegal.

ISP's won't bloke a site - unless instructed to by a court - even then, they don't block it - they will go straight to the host and pull the plug.

Cleanfeed and the IWF watch list disagree with you.

It's somewhat difficult for UK courts to go to a web host in China or Nigeria and pull the plug. Many ISPs in the UK, Virgin included, block various unpleasantness highlighted on the IWF list.

Indeed there's been the odd time this filtering has misfired a bit ;)

If the site is phising, etc, it will get taken down no matter where it's hosted - Granted, ISP's will block / redirect traffic on the IWF list.

Odd, 2 posts ago ISPs didn't block?

Scam sites run for months on end once they find appropriate (indifferent) hosts. There are still plenty of rogue hosting companies around and it's only their transit providers that keep them in a conscience.

You've posted a few times today and been completely wrong, even contradicted yourself in the same thread twice. Please if in doubt check Google before posting, usually works for me people think I know what I'm talking about sometimes :)

Actually scam sites run for no more than 72 hours on any decent host, infact a scam / phishing site, is usualy the result of poor scripting or insecure coding.

I'm not even going to reply to the rest.

I haven't but that seems unlikley, as this PC, I've tried using

XP, openSUSE, Linux mint,
the other PC, Windows 2000, and a variety of Linuxes, and LiveCDs.

So I've tried a wide variety of browsers on different OSs.

I didn't think of contacting the bank to say I have problems once logged in, i'll give that a go, in case it is a known to them Virgin/NTL issue.

Saying all that, I haven't tried connecting directly PC to modem, not using the router, so i suppose I should give that a go first!

Cheers

How odd, looks like I was blaming the wrong party after all!

Connect PC straight to modem and all worked fine. Put router in equation, and hmv just before entering ccard details, page cannot be found, and banking site times out when I hit ok to transfer money.

it's a safecom wired router, odd that certain sites are effected.

Is it a VisaVerified thing? or an SSL site by any chance? What browser are you using?

admars 04-10-2009 17:15

Re: websites which don't work with ntl/virgin

opera, firefox, IE. First thing I assumed was that it was a Linux/Firefox software/OS issue

Not VISA verified as banking doesn't have that although that may be where it fails at HMV.

I guess SSL could be related but odd other shopping sites, ebay, paypal, other internet banking work fine.

Certainly on Firefox, it would be worth adding an exception to the SSL list tools >> options security >> exceptions whack in the url and try it again, all three browers, specifcally firefox handle EV Certificates differently, which is what major companies, like eBay etc use.

"decent host" being the key words there.

Why in the world would you set up a phishing site on a decent host? You wont, you'll go to one of the shady as hell hosts that wont pull your site because all they care about is the money you're paying them.

They'll get blocked by ISPs as soon as they're noticed, but they'll run for a great deal longer than 72 hours. In an ideal world where you can actually get the host to pull it down with a court order you're looking at longer than 72 hours to even get the order.

I've never seen a phishing site that's as a result of poor scripting or coding.

You have to ask him to become a friend or contact in order for him to accept your PM's.
