how do i install my ethernet controller?
 

Hi I recently reinstalled my computer only to find the Internet not working. I need to install drivers for my ethernet controller. I think I need a disc that came with the device. I haven't found the disc so I was wondering if there's another way of solving the problem?

Yep, you need to know the manufacturer and model of the device - once you have that information you should be able to download the drivers from their site.

It's the blue ethernet cable supplied by Virgin Media. It connects my pc to the black ntl modem box. I figured it would come with a CD. Are you saying that I would need to find out the manufacturer which is ntl and the model number which should be on the modem box, right?

No, I mean the card INSIDE your computer/laptop.

The 'Ethernet Controller' will be inside your machine, part of your computer/laptops, and doesn't relate to the modem or cable which NTL supplied.

Click on the link, click on the download link mid way down the page (top one of the 2), agree to the license, click on the link on the following page (they like their links) to confirm you want the file and to actually start the download. Save the exe file to a USB stick or to something you can take to the pc that's not working. Once you have the file saved you can then move it to the other pc and run it.

I downloaded the link and saved it to flashdrive. I then took the flashdrive to the computer then doubled clicked it. I followed the wizard installation and then restarted the computer. When I switched the computer on, the internet still didn't work and the ethernet controller still not detected. Is there something i'm doing wrong or was it the wrong driver download you gave me. Just a reminder, my chipset is an Intel 845GE. Thanks any help appreciated =)

just because its got an intel chipset does not mean the drivers are intel. My Mobo has a P45 chipset yet the ethernet drivers are marvel yukon.

The information you gave us about your motherboard is far to sketchy we need a proper motherboard model number.

I had a look inside the machine and the ethernet driver says somthing like s tech or 5 tech im not quite sure.

yes its was originally taken out of the emachines 5220 case and placed into a coolmaster case. I will now try this link and get back to you.

The best bet would have been finding out the motherboard model number or actually telling us the original model of Emachine ;)

Yep I think this is the one, however, now that have I have windows Vista Ultimate installed, how can I install the drivers when it doesn't say that it supports vista?

What I originally tried to do was install vista only, but inorder to do that I had to use a cd that wipes the harddrive, which also wiped out my ethernet controller. I have to keep windows xp in a file called windows old which I didn't want to do. I tried all your links and none of them worked so I was forced to install windows with the eMachines restore cd (Windows xp home). I have the ethernet controller working and the internet is all good. Now all i have to do is install my windows vista upgrade.

Assuming that the earlier link was indeed the spec of your machine i`d probably just stick with XP, if i actually used Windows that is.
If you are intent on upgrading to Vista though then i`d think about upgrading the memory too if i were you.

mate please stop messing around with this friends PC. No offence but you do not have the skills required to get XP running properly ( finding drivers is a basic job) the more you mess the more of a mess you can make. When I started I started small and learnt as I went on

BTW I have a driver dvd that pretty much covers all drivers for XP it may be worth your while sourcing one of those if you do indeed wish to continue learning. Guys sell them on ebay but you can get them free. If you want to send me a SAE I will post you a dvd full of drivers

I get where your coming from but I only came here for professional advice. I saved all those links and ran them on the other computer. Nothing happened. So PLEASE where do I install the device driver once saved to flashdrive?

ps: I'm not planning on being a professional with computers but thanks for the advice.

in device manager double click the missing device and select update driver. Allow it to run a search it should find it. If not take me up on my offer as there is a 99% chance I have the driver sat here in front of me.

hmm... I've done that already and it asks me to either search online or browse the computer. It doesn't show up on my Removable Disk (F: ) when I ask it to browse there. I am such a noob what am I doing wrong?

I think what I might do is install an old wireless router. I dont know if it will work but it may be the only way to access the internet. Once on the internet I will install a driver ultility to update my drives. Some of the links on here were actually driver ultilities which gave me the idea of using a router.

Ps: the driver ultilities don't work without an internet connection so...

I've fixed my ethernet controller at last. I updated the drivers by searching the c: drive. I don't believe all the trouble I've gone through when it was so simple. I think you guys were trying to tell me this all along especially you Zing and for some weird reason I just wasn't getting it, hence why I said I was a noob at pc's.

How I solved it:
1. Opened control panel
2. Double clicked Device manager
3. right clicked properties on unknown device
4. clicked driver tab then 'Update driver'
5. Then Clicked 'browse my computer for driver software'
6. I needed to change the search so it searched for 'local drive :c'
7. Once found it said 'Installing driver software'
8. I was Quite pleased with myself
9. The Internet was working again
