DVD Ripper
 

hi guys and girls, i am lookin for a good dvd ripper, what i want to do is to store all my dvd's onto my external hard drive, most prob in avi format ( not to sure about this yet ), then it will allow us to not only free up space in the cupboard but also let anyone watch what they want, any one got some good tips or links to programs ( preff free if possible, there is a credit crunch you know ), thanks all :cool:

I use this method here http://dailyapps.net/2008/08/hack-at...lity-dvd-rips/ to make avi rips of my dvd's.

Works a treat for me and is all free software.

thanks just going have a look now, you think it makes us lazy ripping dvd's so we have not got to get up to change dvd

To completely rip a DVD, I use either DVD Shrink, or DVD Santa. Though I have only converted AVI to DVD (which I use ConvertXtoDVD for) but I've never done it the other way around.

Converting from DVD to AVI does lose quality.

i was just going to ask, what i want to do is to store all my dvd's on external hd, the problem is my comp ( media center ) is in a different room to tv, i have been told a good quality video sender or media sender will work, but what do you think for the best qualitly pic, what should i convert to the dvd to?

Well, do you want your backups to be full quality or slightly less? A DVD is generally 4.7GB. An AVI rip of a DVD is around 700MB. Quality or file size?

If you have enough hard drive space, I'd advise doing normal DVD rips, and leaving them in DVD format.

You don't need a 'video sender' to send media such as these. A standard file share over wires or wireless will do the job perfectly. Though transfering 1 film takes a while on wireless, let alone a good amount.

I would advise just playing your dvds on a dvd player plugged into your TV . Why make work for yourself

That doesn't work all over the house, with simultaneous viewings of different films does it though? (Sadly :p:)

well in all fairness trying to stream the same video file to various sources doesnt work to well in my experience either


look at it this way . How good is your pc? how many hard drives does it have and how dvd readers does it have.

say like most people you have 1 and its a modest pc its what 15 minutes to decrypt a dvd then what half an hour minimum to convert to whatever flavour of avi you wish. Thats 45 minutes per dvd. Say you have 50 thats 2250 minutes of ripping which is 37.5 hours

Plus on top of that the chance some will go out of sync and some will require subtiles for foreign speaking parts

DVD shrink ripped in uncompressed format straight onto a hhd. Makes a very easy a DVD quality library
