I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
Hi I'm interested in the Intel Pentium D 945 Socket 775 3.40GHZ Processor. I currently have a Pentium D 2.80GHZ chip but to play bluray I need 3.0ghz. My motherboard has a 775 socket and 2GB of Ram. What I'm unsure about is whether my computer's RAM will support this or does it not matter? Or What do I need to lookout for when buying a Intel Chip?

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
Make and model of motherboard would be useful. You may be able to use a multi-core CPU as a replacement.
Core2 duo or quad would almost certainly play better than the Pentium. |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
Like DaiNasty said, a Core2 would surely make the viewing better, as well as other overall performance. It's whether your motherboard can support a Core2 processor. What is your motherboard make/model?

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
To play blu ray you will also need a decent graphics card to output 1080p and plenty and I mean plenty of ram
Dai the Pentium D are dual core ;) http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL8CP |

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
ok a quick google and Asrock gives 2 options of board neither natches your actual name and neither does any in their support list which isnt unusual lol What chipset doesit have? The Presler core was the last of the Pentium D and Obviously Conroe was C2D ---------- Post added at 13:16 ---------- Previous post was at 13:13 ----------
http://www.asrock.com/news/show.asp?ID=90 is this the board? if it is then you can not have Quad core at all and the FSB maxes @ 800 mhz so its E2 duals or E4 duals with upto date bios |

http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=775i945GZ&s=775 not on the cpu support list but maybe its not been updated

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
Out of interest how much where you planning to pay for your 945? They often tend to cost more than the basic C2Ds and perform significantly less. Just thinking that if the CPU is going to cost enough more it might be a better idea to get a newer mobo and C2D CPU for only a small amount more than you would pay for the 945 alone. And thats assuming your board doesn't support one of the lower end C2Ds which it may as Zing has pointed out.

I certainly didn't ;)

How much is the Quadcore Dou and is it safe to buy secondhand? |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
It supports all of these processors:

So the Pentium D 945 3.40GHZ i want to buy is suitable for my computer according to the list. but is it my best option? |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
Indeed, it mentions 3Ghz as a base speed, perhaps for the Pentium or Pentium D series.
The Core2 or Core2Quad series is a hell of a lot more powerful however, so, 2Ghz+ should be fine for Bluray. Looking through that supported list of processors though, most of them are old and no longer sold as new parts. The ones that are still new cost £140+ it seems. I'd wait for zing to advise you here. |

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
make sure you look at the cpu compatabilty list I posted there is no quad on it and only a few C2Ds
|
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
if the pic that you linked to is your mobo then you should be fine with a intel q6600 as they have a fsb of 1066 which is the highest that the board, will support but you will probably need to flash to the latest bios.
i have had blu-ray rips playing on a pentium 4 3.0ghz, but it was let down by the graphics card as, it is only a old nvidia pci card. it will be cheaper to get a good core 2 duo would probably be better dependent on what you use the pc for as it will be cheaper for you. |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
I missed the pic me bad so its not the Conroe Pressler at all then lol @ the op could you actually take a pic of it in the case so we can be sure as you have told us different things about it now and that is only a stock photo
|
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
I have watched blu ray movies on my current laptop which only has a 2.16Ghz dual core CPU. The most important factor by far is the graphics chipset.

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
Your spouting CPU core names when talking about a motherboard why?The Conroe was released July and August 06 and the Kentsfield Nov 06 and Jan 07 XE first the standard for each. The board I linked to earlier had the name Conroe Pressler with a model number underneath the board you linked to is something else entirely in fact it says Conroe Kentsfield on it no mention of Presler on the board at all although it supports it.
The actual model name for that board is 4CoreDual-vsta |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
Would the best solution here be to download Everest and get the mobo name from that?
Not sure where to get it from as Zing normally suggests this ;) |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip

I just downloaded CPU-Z and found out this information about the motherboard. Model: 4CoreDual-VSTA Chipset: VIA PT880 Pro My Intel Chip: Pentium D 915 (2.80GHZ) So my options are: Core™ Quad / Core™ 2 Extreme / Core™ 2 Duo / Pentium® XE / Pentium® D / Pentium® 4 / Celeron® D I want to be able to watch bluray so which of these is my best option? |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
ok follow the cpu support list Druchi gave and remember that name for future refference

Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
I would be going with either of these two:
Core™ 2 Duo / Core™ 2 Quad Quad is most likely overkill for that kind of thing though. |

I would probably go for an older second hand E6 dual core, though an E2 or E4 Dual core would probably work just as good for your needs. |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
How do check if a CPU will run Blu-Ray?

A good graphics board will be able to do a lot of the work required thus taking load of the CPU. ;) |

you bung a blu ray rom in the machine install software to decode it and insert a blu ray disc into the rom and play it. If it lags then the system isnt upto it ;) |
Re: I want to upgrade my computers Intel chip
Ok thanks for all your input much appreciated. I think I know which one I'll go for now. :) all the best
