Help tracing an old supermarket/food store

I am being driven potty by this.

About a year ago I was looking for some information on the suburb of Manchester I live in, in particular a derelict supermarket (former Kwik Save).

Anyway, in the process of so doing, I came across a photo of ANOTHER small supermarket (well, more like a food store) taken in 1958. It would have looked quite modern for the time. I recall Googling the name and finding out that it was a chain of shops that eventually ended up being part of Tesco (possibly through more than one takeover) in the late fifties/early sixties, and I think it was only in the North of England.

Trouble is, I can't now find the photo and I can't recall the name.

I recall it sounded almost foreign, something like Adena but it wasn't actually that.

Several hours of Googling has not unearthed this name and I wondered if anyone knows of it.

Nope, all too recent....this was late fifties. I recall the name being a bit weird, but that might be just because I'd never heard of it. It did sound almost as if it could be foreign.

No, not them. More of a strange sounding name.

The photo was black and white, but the signage was white background with what were probably red letters.

Gorton in Manchester, though it was a chain so it must also have been in other places.

You might also want to put the street/district into the Local Image Collection

Have a look at the following site you may just spot the name you are thinking of. It has a fairly comprehensive history of the different food retailers in GB.

Just for a bit of history, Adsega's 47 chain stores were bought out as you say by Tesco's in 1965

Great prices. A ten bob note would go far in there. :)

Hmmm, still have a 10bob note somewhere, though it is in a gold locket that my mum gave me :D

I worked part time in a supermarket in Gorton Manchester prior to leaving school in the early 1960's. name of Adsega.

It was definitely Adsega. I remember it as a child in Didsbury in the early 1960s.

I had shares in Hillards when Tesco took over after a hostile takeover bid in 1987. Eventually, after they obtained most of the company, the remaining shareholders like myself were forced to sell our shares to Tesco.

IIRC we got some cash and Tesco shares (which I still have to this day!)

The Hillards family resent this to this day and used the money for other business investments.
