Top iPhone Apps?

So.....you've got a shiny iPhone and it's crammed full of the best Apps (free or paid for) that you can find.....what are they?

I've only been using an iPhone since Sunday, but here are mine:

National Rail: Lists train times, gives real-time updates, has a nice 'last train home' feature

Tube Deluxe: Route planner and service indicator for the London Underground

TV Guide: Lists what's on now and next for hundreds of channels

Shazam: Identifies any song playing on the radio, links you to it on Youtube and iTunes, provides additional information about the artists

Mocha VNC Lite: VNC Client

Haven't really downloaded much apart from those.....what are your favourites?

Stuart 07-07-2009 11:36

Re: Top iPhone Apps?

Another vote for tube deluxe..

Also London Bus by the same author (brilliant if you happen to get lost in London as you can use it to look up your nearest bus stop and the timetable for the routes that serve that stop.

Re: Top iPhone Apps?

Problem with the IM apps are that the iphone doesn't allow background apps. You have to have it actually open/in use for it to work... something apple should allow imho

punky 08-07-2009 12:16

Re: Top iPhone Apps?

If you jailbreak your iPhone you can use Backgrounder to force apps to run in the background. Means you can listen to a music app like Pandora or Last.fm and play a game/whatever.

BeeJive and some others work now using Push, it basically tells your phone that an app has an update (new data, message, whatever). So works the same really...Although not for apps that do more than notify..

But its a fiver :) and I don't use IM often enough to justify that.

I was wondering, if anybody has got the GBA Emulator working yet, it requires doing "somethings" to your phone - but, there seems to be different methods for v3.0 - I've been trying without sucess to FTP and or SSH into my iPhone - no such luck though..

Re: Top iPhone Apps?

Got some new ones :)

Mobile Allowance: Allows you to check your O2 balances without having to use a text message or log in to their site.

ToDo: Basically a To Do list generator. You can track single tasks, checklists of tasks, or projects. With a single task or checklist of tasks you can set a date that either the task of checklist is to be completed by. Within a project you can have multiple tasks, all with differing priorities/dates. This is probably my favourite app at the moment.

Flight Control: Highly addictive game.

Harbour Master: Another highly addictive game.

Forgot to mention before, but this now works with the Notification system introduced with OS3.0.

However... it doesn't appear to be on the App Store anymore

Searching for "Tioti" doesn't bring it up, & using a direct iTunes link doesn't work either.

Very odd.

There is now a free official "Sky+" app from BSkyB, although from a quick look at the reviews it doesn't look as good as Tioti (which, when it was on the App Store, was less than 2 quid, so hardly pricey).

Not as such best one, I've got installed

AtomicFart = FREE - Funny more than anything

Liquid Lite - Little one loves this, as it's basically water sloshing around making noises. Pretty relazing.

iHandGun - FREE

IGunLite - FREE

ATM Hunter - FREE - Finds Cash machines in your area or closest to you

ChaseTheDot - Free - does what it says

I contacted Tioti about this. They said that the most recent version of Tioti TV+ contained a bug in the notification system, & so they have temporarily removed it from the App Store while waiting for a newly submitted version to be approved by Apple. So it should be back in a couple of week.

iTap RDP - Remote desktop client.
Not much you can't do with this.
Left/right click/double click. Scroll, zoom (pinch), scope (magnifying glass) to exact point to click, all done with gestures.
From 8 to 24bit colour portrait or landscape with adjustable resolution.
Advanced settings for 3G and Wi-Fi.
2nd keyboard with various 'F' functions and Pg Up/Pg Dn etc.

I've tried a few of these but this one's the dog's doo-dah's.

Six?! LOL, I've got the Five Icon Dock, didn't realise there was a Six Icon Dock.

Nice wallpaper too btw ;)

You could use iBlank & blank null to have a completely blank first page on the Springboard, thus revealing the whole wallpaper (with App icons on page 2 onwards).

Now that in-App purchasing for free Apps is allowed, Boxcar has gone FREE.

Instead of purchasing the main App itself, the App + one Push service is free, and you pay to add additional Push services.

I have Push email anyway (Google), don't need Push for Facebook (email updates), so all I need is one Push service for Boxcar (Twitter)... which is free :)

Oh, forgot to mention some I've added recently:

Snapture - a camera App, better than the built-in one. Used to only be available for Jailbroken devices via e.g. Cydia, but is now on the App Store.

Redlaser - barcode scanner. Scans & IDs barcodes, & searches online for the best price. Works quite well. The devs release betas for free on Cydia, prior to then releasing the final version as a paid-for App on the App Store.

Layar & Wikitude - Two separate Augmented Reality (AR) Apps.

JB-wise, I have:

SBSettings (process/memory info & memory freeing; on/off toggles for WiFi, 3G, etc.; App shortcuts & other tweaks & customisations)

Winterboard (theme manager - I just use it for the transparent dock option at the moment).

Five Icon Dock

Five Column Springboard

Where I work one guy has TVcatchup streaming Sky sports news, as well as last.fm to his phone all day.

Can you connect the iphone to a laptop and use it as a modem and watch TVcathup on that.?

Yes. Although "Unlimited" varies.

With O2, it is unlimited (although it is subject to an FUP, there is no concrete limit, more just a case of "don't take the mick").

With Orange, although "unlimited", there is a 750MB per month limit.

It's as unlimited as I need it to be. It's perhaps the best thing about the iphone as it has assisted in introducing internet as an unlimited service on contracts. I used to make sure any internet access was very limited but now I use it carefree and very intensivly. Worth noting though that at home and work I'm on wifi.

Right where I park someone has a BT open zone so I can blast into my work emails as I park then have them all checked by the time I walk into work leaving me stress free to grab coffee and cereal :-)

Love this phone and onto my 3rd one on the 18th Dec (3gs whoop).
As sad as I am I'll have owned all 3 generations then (queued up for the 2g at launch)..
