Ethernet port wireless adapters

Bit of a stretch, but I'm hoping something exists. :)

Is there a wireless adapter that isn't USB and connects up to the network port of, say, a non-wireless router?

What they are called though... now thats another matter.

They generally are designed to work the other way around. Connect a non-wireless PC to a wireless router

They are these http://www.google.co.uk/products?hl=...pter&scoring=r

What you are after is called a wireless repeater.

Wireless Bridge Actually, but getting hold of one is a different matter, I've not seen one to buy in a long time

I saw that one but it's expensive and out of stock :(

Re: Ethernet port wireless adapters

It probably cheaper most of the time just to get a new router

Re: Ethernet port wireless adapters

I use an Edimax EW-7206APG as a wireless bridge for my X360 and it works a treat.
Could easily be used as an access point as well.

Re: Ethernet port wireless adapters

I have a solution that I think works but I don't have access to the equipment at the moment so I can't check for sure.

1) Buy a Sky (Netgear) DG934G ADSL modem/router on ebay for about £5
2) Reprogram it back to a Netgear DG834G version 3 using these instructions
3) Switch off its DHCP server, fix it's own IP address and set up the wireless parameters
4) Leave the 'line' port disconnected
5) Attach up to 4 devices to the switch ports

Wouldn't that kind of defeat the object of wireless though. The OP is asking for a wireless bridge.

No, because it's being used as a wireless bridge and not a router.

Right, ok, I understand now.

I think what I'm after is an access point. I already have the router, it just doesn't have wireless connectivity.

It might well be cheaper or more effective to buy a replacement router, one with wireless access. Though I don't know how much access points are.

It's cheaper and easier to replace the router than looking for access points.

£28 for the access point I linked to and around the same for a 'G' Cable wireless router.

Re: Ethernet port wireless adapters

Ah but, the advantage of going with a separate access point is that you can put in the best position to cover your house. This is probably not the same place as the easiest central wiring point where your router/switch would go.

Re: Ethernet port wireless adapters

Just found an article I previously printed out about how to use a router as an access point. Might be useful to some:
