@Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

Haven't seen this posted anywhere else.

As of yesterday, all new customers signing up to Virgin will get a @virginmedia.com e-mail addy and will be on the Google Mail platform.

Virgin will now start concentrating on migrating the millions of existing addresses to the Google Mail platform and once that is done the option of getting an @virginmedia.com address

Re: @Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

Is there any indication out of interest as to how long they think it will take to migrate all of the existing users on to an optional virginmedia.com email address and onto the Googlemail platform?

Approx 18months and it will be in stages.

I don't think I'm going to bother - I already have a virgin.net address, and I think it has a nicer ring to it. :D

Yours will be the first platform to merge.

Re: @Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

You don't HAVE to have a @virginmedia.com address - you will be able to keep @virgin.net/@ntlworld.com/@blueyonder.co.uk if you prefer

Peter_ 30-05-2009 11:32

Re: @Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

If you are an a @ntlworld.com email user and you use all 15 alias and want to change to a @virginmedia.com email address you would have to lose 5 alias as you can only have 10 alias on the Googlemail oplatform.

Kymmy 30-05-2009 11:51

Re: @Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

I don't think I've bothered using an ISP email for a long, long, long time... Much prefer to use my own domains as I know then if I change ISP's I don't need to change all my registered email addies

if u make new mailboxes will these go onto the new googlemail?

Do you have to swap from @ntlworld.com to @virginmedia.com to get onto the new Google platform out of interest?
Can you have a mixture of @nltworld.com and @virginmedia.com email addresses?

Post 8 above answers that question for you.

No they won't

Existing customer are staying where they are at the moment. any new e-mails get created on the platform you are on

Does it?
Post #8 only refers to losing some aliases if you have more than 10 at the moment and move to the @virginmedia.com email.

VM Press Release

Existing customers will then be migrated across to the new service at no extra cost and will be able to keep their existing @blueyonder.co.uk, @ntlworld.com or @virgin.net email addresses or choose to sign up for new @virginmedia.com email addresses.
From that it seems, the answers are no, you won't have to swap over to use the Google platform and no, you can't have both(note the highlighted 'or' in the quote).

You can have both on the google platform and all accounts will over the next 18 months transfer over to that platform and the old small 30Mb platform will close.

You can have 10 email addresses on the google platform but if you have @ntlworld.com accounts and you use all 15 allowed you can keep them all, but if you decide that you want a @virginmedia.com account then you would have to lose 6 email addresses to take one @virginmedia.com address as you can only have 10 email addresses when you take even just 1 @virginmedia.com address.

It starts to get complicated I know and we have had training on this as well.:D

How many people have more than 10 @ntlworld.com addresses?
The questions were as I see it:-
1) will people be forced in time over to the new @virginmedia.com address and not have access to your old style address. Answer is no they wont be forced and the old style address will be on the new platform.
2) will it be possible to have and old style address(eg@ntlworld.com) at the same time as having a new @virginmedia.com address on the new Google platform. The answer to this prior to any mention of the Google platform was yes, but that was two years ago. The Press Release and the VM email help on the email changes say no.

After your mailbox has been moved to the Google platform, you will be able to choose whether you want to change to an @virginmedia.com address.
The phrase used is 'change to', this does not suggest that you can have your existing address at the same time as a new @virginmedia.com address. Will people be able to have a joe.bloggs@ntlworld.com and a joe.bloggs@vriginmedia.com at the same time in order to avoid problems from having organisations having your old address? Is there a link that can confirm this one way or the other?

Re: @Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

Honestly those who kinda seem excited about the possibility of getting a virginmedia email address could well be virgins themselves ;) I mean why care about that? all it means is you will have to let everyone know and you are bound to forget someone. Ive always found pop email to be disapointing anyway and much prefer web based email as as long as you have a reliable account its not gonna get lost you wont forget to back it up it wont download all your email onto your pc when you can just open the ones you want to.I know you ca use VMs/ntl/by email online I just dont cuz its poop

nomadking 31-05-2009 16:55

Re: @Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

It would seem silly to continue to use a @ntlworld.com address when NTL no longer exists.

zing_deleted 31-05-2009 17:00

Re: @Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

no more silly than to change and email address you have used for years when you can still use it now.Ive got a @hotmail.com address ive used for close to 10 years and an AOL.com address I have had around the same amount of time. I moved ISPs when they offered the all inclusive dial up starting Screaming.net Worldonline Lineone then AOL only leaving AOL when cable broadband was intoduced. AOLs address does not get used but its still active and hotmail is what I mainly use

I presume that you have read my signature and are aware that I work for Virgin and therefore know what I have stated to be correct as we have had the training and the relevant documents that go with that training, if you choose not to believe what I have posted then that is up to you.

I'm just going by the official VM press release and the official VM email help. Strictly speaking, those are the sources of info most of us are meant to use. If I ring CS, what would they say. Have they received the same info as you or that of the press release?

TBH, having read your posts, I still dont have a clear idea of the correct answer to the following ;

If I already have myname.mysurname@ntlworl.com, can I now also have myname.mysurname@virginmedia.com - both pointing to the same e-mail box ?

If so, how do I get the virginmedia.com address ? - and just as important, how do I stop someone else from getting it ?

From what I understand so far - for any existing e-mail addresses you will have the choice of EITHER keeping @ntlworld.com OR swapping it for a @virginmedia.com address.

For any new addresses after the platform change they will then be only @virginmedia.com

No-one can currently create a @virginmedia.com address with an existing e-mail from any of the 3 legacy domains (e.g. john.smith@ ntlworld.com/blueyonder.co.uk/virgin.net)

The biggest issues comes with who out of the three legacy domains gets the @virginmedia.com address. So if there is john.smith on all three e-mail platforms who gets the @Virginmedia.com address.

As of yet I'm not sure how they are going to solve that one!

I agree zing, my ntlworld addy has been really unreliable over the years, so much so I haven't looked at it for months now.
I too have been using hot-mail for a while now and have had no problems at all with it, I certainly won't be swapping over preferring the old adage "if it ain't broke leave it alone".:)

Re: @Virginmedia.com addresses launch for new customers

and another question for discussion - if you do change from @ntlworld.com to @virginmedia.com, is your existing mail to the old address directed to the new address, and if so, how long would both addresses be in existence?

Also, having got your virginmedia.com e-mail address, are you then automatically moved over to the 200MB of free webspace with a virginmedia.com address?

They are aware of that and it will be first come first served and as they are opening the platforms one at a time then it will be @virgin.net who get the first choice followed by @ntlworld.com and finally @blueyonder.co.uk.

I do hope they're going to send letters out where there's dupe accounts across the domains. I could see the call centres going berserk otherwise.

lol. Be honest as you like Ben. But 60 year old Mr Smith suddenly having to change his email address everywhere is bad enough - if he has no prior warning, that's just a tad unfair in my opinion - and I think there'll be a fair few calls along those lines.

I know what you mean and more information should be made available nearer the time.

I use my full name but know that no one else will have my email address if I choose to take a @virginmedia.com address and it is not reserved, just my name is unusual.
