2mb to 10mb upgrade - when?

I heard that those on the 2mb package will be upgraded to 10mb around May is this true, I'm still on a Blueyonder address since VM took them over will it apply to us as well in the Wigan area?

Just thought I'd ask, thanks

Dave

all virgin media "M" broadband customers should be upgraded from 2Mb to 10Mb, STARTING IN MAY. you should have had an email and a letter explaining all this by now. now sure when the upgrades will be finished or which areas go first.

Ah, it was right, thanks for the confirmation and your reply. I have had no Email or letter to date regarding this.

You will have had an email telling you about this and the increase in charge for BB M and TV XL and non-ebilling charge, .......

You have to pray that your UBR isn't already oversubscribed, I know I'm dreading the 2Mb to 10Mb uplift. I'm allegedly on 10Mb and currently get around 1.2mMb between 7pm and 11pm due to oversubscription of my UBR.

Realistically though, no you don't need to do anything other than wait for the willy waving letter / email from oversubscription media, sorry I mean Virgin Media.

Are you a network engineer that fully understands what effect upgrading all current 2Mb users to 10Mb will have on the performance of any particular UBR?

Making all of these users go faster (without them increasing their usage) may actually make the performance better.

It was different when they upgraded the 10Mb XL customers to 20Mb because a large proportion of XL users were likely to be heavy users and only limited in their use by the speed of the connection.

i thought, from previous upgrades, that a modem re-start would be necessary? can anyone confirm this? i remember having to re-boot my modem to get the 1Mb to 2Mb upgrade. maybe this is not required now?

cheers

Most likely the modems will be rebooted remotely, when each area is upgraded.

From my point of view, being connected to a UBR which runs at a usage on the high 90% at the moment, what actual good will come from increasing 2Mb customers to five times their current speed?

At the moment I can get speeds of around 1.2Mb during some evenings on my 10Mb connection, surely basics maths would indicate that 20 x 2Mb users could theoretically use 40Mb/s compared to 20 x 10Mb users who could theoretically use 200Mb/s ?

And as VM have stated on several occasions, the majority of their users are on the 2Mb package (68%), which means they will remove a small percentage of 20Mb (11%) users from my UBR (onto the 50Mb 10k's) and uplift the 68% of their customers from 2Mb to 10Mb.

So, lets look at this as though there are 100 people to a UBR card: They will remove 11 x 20Mb users and add 68 10Mb users...

Hmmmmm... Yeah, I see where you're coming from, the performance and load on my UBR is bound to improve....

I apologise if I appeared rude. I am no more qualified than yourself to suggest what the performance effect of increasing all 2Mb users to 10Mb will be but.......

...increase the speed of a 2Mb customer to 10Mb and assume that they will download the same amount of data and it will have a positive effect on the other users of the UBR. Why? They will spend one fifth of the time downloading their data and hence free up network capacity for the others.

Only the network capacity planners, however, are qualified to determine how the performance of the UBR will be affected.

You are pessimist that this change will be bad for you. I am optimistic and do not see it making any real difference.

Hi Ernie,

That's cool, no apology needed !

Yes, I guess I am pessimistic where VM are concerned, this is purely based on the fact that my UBR has been oversubscribed for nearly two years. 2nd line, the CEO's office and planning appear to have no clue if and when it will be upgraded (kind of ironic for a planning department to not have a plan !)

I was getting pretty excited about the 50Mb rollout, not for the chance to upgrade, but for the 20Mb users to be moved and so the load on my UBR being brought down to a level where I can hit 10Mb when I need it.
Unfortunately I have a sneaky feeling that moving the 2 guys to 10 will negate any benefits brought from moving the 20 guys....

As far as I am aware the new 10MB tier will run on the newer DOCSIS 3.0 but at DOCSIS 1.1 or something like that. Which should help improve things.

broadbandking 29-04-2009 17:40

Re: 2mb to 10mb upgrade - when?

I have only heard the 20Mb users will be using DOCSIS 1.1

Turkey Machine 29-04-2009 18:38

Re: 2mb to 10mb upgrade - when?

Why won't they migrate everybody to DOCSIS 1.1? It'd stamp out many cloners leeching cheap services.

Re: 2mb to 10mb upgrade - when?

It won't as they are hacking it already

Just a recap.
I was informed by VM (English speaking) that the updates starts from today May 1st not everyone will be upgraded at the same time, you will be notified by letter when this will be, this is for 2mb to 10mb upgrade of course and depends on which area they do first.

One point to note.... I could well be wrong, hope I am but those with Set Top Boxes (STB) will not run at 10Mb speeds.

Just a thought, if I sign up with VM I'd be put on 10mb wouldn't I??? Any clue when this will be in the Wigan area?

I forgot to add.... the modem so VM tells me doesn't require a reboot it will see the upgrade automatically.

So if they are saying that it will mean customers will be ringing up to complain about their non-upgrade and we will be saying just reboot your modem please, you could not make it up.

do i really need a new modem??

Thanks!

I've just done the same and I already know that my modem is OK as I have recently downgraded from BB L to BB M.

This process is a mess!

Taking this action is all about getting you an appropriate modem and does not actually move you up the queue to get you upgraded sooner. The upgrade will be phased in as with previous upgrades - region by region.

All this process is going to do is send a lot of unneeded modems to people and get them upset that they're not going to get to 10Mb any faster.
