Virgin Media Broadband School

UK ISP Virgin Media Finds Brits Baffled by Broadband Jargon

Quote:

The latest study of over 3,000 Internet users conducted by Virgin Media has revealed that 18% of online surfers don't know what broadband actually is, 53% thought broadband relied on having a phone line (satellite, Wi-Fi and Mobile Broadband solutions don't) and almost half are puzzled by the term meg (usually short for 'Megabit(s) per second' or 'Mb' - a measurement of broadband speed, though 8% thought it meant Megapixels).

To combat this problem Sir Richard Branson has announced plans to trial Virgin Media 'Broadband Schools', which will launch in cities that display the least amount of broadband knowledge and no doubt help VM increase its customer base too.

I wonder if they'll be teaching people what Subscriber Traffic Management and all fibre optic broadband are myself.

They will I'm sure have sales bots wandering around there as well. If I get the chance I'll go for the comedy factor.

Personally i dont think kids care what their parents got , as long as they got internet i dont think it really matters to them what its called or not called.

I think kids are a lot more clueful than you think. Tell the kid who plays games online that it's fine someone in another country has better pings to London than him.

It does sound like too good a marketing opportunity for VM to miss but anyone who gets to try and show my husband how to switch a computer on will certainly either earn their money and have the patience of a saint or lose the will to live after the first 10 minutes. :D

You should be quite capable of teaching him yourself.

Just ensure that the is nothing sharp to hand or even club shaped as we do not want the headline.

Wife kills husband after multiple attempts to get him to switch computer on.:D:D:D

Sounds to me like Virgin are just finding out if we are as stupid as they've always thought of us to be. I'm not surprised STM isn't in there somewhere.

With all due respect how can you possibly comment on a cable service when you dont have it?

Shouldnt you be over at the Be* forums instead....

;)

Re: Virgin Media Broadband School

Everything else aside it's really just a PR stunt.

Go to Virgin Media's 'Broadband School' get educated in why 'fibre optic' broadband is better than your old ADSL service, be accosted by sales bots offering information and special deals, etc, etc.

If you expect anything else you're probably being a bit naive. It's certainly something I would either avoid or attend just so I can ask the questions they don't want to answer :)

Well more sales than PR, but why not?

Well, it is..isn't it?

No doubt there'll be a sales element there, but again, why not?

Re: Virgin Media Broadband School

Fibre optic broadband is better than ADSL (FACT)

Now here the part to remember, Virgin Media don't run there network correctly as it has coax and copper also which means it isn't a true fibre optic network, so they have some of the same issues as ADSL has which is congestion, if Virgin ran the network correctly they would split the nodes up to lessen the load on the network they would have spent more time on the DOCSIS 3.0 network plus they would make sure the UBR's are upgraded before they become overloaded.

So at the moment ADSL can in some areas be better than Fibre optic/copper/coax/VM connection

I dare anybody to go to one of these conventions and say "Be* Broadband's better!" and watch the salesmen squirm.
